John Mitchell Signs 5-Year PPK Contract

John Mitchell Haulage & Warehousing, one of Scotland’s largest hauliers, has signed a new five year pence-per-kilometre (PPK) tyre contract. One of the first road transport operators in the country to adopt a PPK approach to its tyre requirements in 1992, ATS Euromaster and Michelin have managed the tyres across the John Mitchell Haulage & Warehousing fleet of commercial vehicles, for over three decades now.

With a mixed fleet of 350 MAN and Mercedes-Benz trucks as well as Dennison trailers operating from its base in Grangemouth, the agreement sees ATS Euromaster support the company with monthly fleet inspections and UK-wide emergency roadside assistance in the event of a tyre-related breakdown.

Michelin Lands Eco-Aware Haulage Fleet Contract

Michelin has been awarded a fleet contract with construction and land remediation company, GSE Haulage. The company believes the French tyre manufacturer can help the growth of its business with the fitment of Michelin XZE 2+ and XDY 3 tyres to its twenty Scania tippers, on a “pence per kilometre” contract. The vehicles will be operating on and off-road in the punishing environments of construction and quarry sites, meaning that mileage potential and resistance to damage – therefore reducing downtime – are the most important issues for GSE. Highlighting the importance of his tyre policy, Ricky Hemmings, Managing Director of Kent-based GSE Haulage explains: “One of the lessons we have learned with tyres is that price isn’t everything and by adopting a fleet-wide Michelin policy we have been able to radically reduce vehicle downtime.”

CV Operator Show Booked for 13-15 April 2010

Following the postponement of the 2009 CV Show earlier this year, the event’s organisers are now promoting the Commercial Vehicle Operator Show (13-15 April 2010) as the event for everything for everything from fleet management systems to tyres, lubes and fuels, specialist refrigerated or municipal equipment or vehicle parts, bodies and equipment. Not since the CV Show in April 2008 has such a meeting place been available to enable operators to review their business arrangements and discuss technical and operational developments with suppliers.

According to the organisers the CV Operator Show will focus exclusively on the road transport and logistics business. The event will be held at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham

Like the CV Show, the Commercial Vehicle Operator Show is owned by The CV Show LLP, comprising the Road Haulage Association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and IRTE Services Ltd, the trading company of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers).

Exactly What it Says on the Rim

Ever struggled to explain the subtleties of tyre type, application and axle positioning to haulage customers? With economic conditions forcing more operators to simply ask how to make tyres cheaper, explaining the benefits of correct tyre selection has arguably as important as even. In the midst of this context company representatives recently explained how Kumho’s truck tyre range features a clear naming system for all new tyres – L for long haul, R for regional, M for mixed service. The position is signified by a letter – S for steer, T for trailer and A for all-position. Finally a two digit number (01, 02 and so on) shows the series.

McConechy's Reports Dip In Profits

According to the Herald Scotland website, Ayr-based tyre retailer McConechy's Tyre Service has posted pre-tax profits of £485,685 for the year to the end of April, down on the figure of £1.2 million for the previous year.

Dates Announced for New Look CV Show

Following several weeks’ consultation with transport sector suppliers, the Commercial Vehicle Show Partnership has announced dates for the next “Commercial Vehicle Operator Show”. The exhibition will be held between April 13 and 15, 2010 at the Birmingham NEC.

The event, reports the organiser, will enable exhibitors to present the widest possible range of products and services used in the day to day running of commercial vehicles of all sizes and types, with a particular accent on environmental impact, improved efficiency and profitability. The following year (2011) will see the first of a new Commercial Vehicle Show series.

Lochmaben Transport Clocks Up 650,000km with Michelin

As part of a dedicated Bimson Haulage contract with metals stockholder Aalco, Scottish based haulier Lochmaben Transport employs one of its Volvo FH12 tractor units for the Birmingham to Aberdeen run, on which it covers approximately 830 miles per day. Since its delivery in 2007 this Volvo 6×2 tractor unit has covered more than 400,000 miles in total – all on the same set of Michelin XDE2+ drive axle tyres.

Soopa Toobs Emphasise Diversity of ATV Applications

All Terrain Vehicles are so named due to the broad and diverse range of off-road and increasingly on-road applications for which they are used. These machines are becoming ever more sophisticated with electric start, selectable four wheel drive, lights, power take off drive shafts, more powerful engines and differentials to improve traction and ride in the turns. Aside from their use in recreational pursuits a variety of accessories, attachments and implements are available enabling the machine to perform many duties such as weed control, pest control and hunting, livestock feeding, snow clearance, haulage duties around the farm, estate, park, garden or wherever they are used.

Of course, alongside the wide offering of parts and peripherals, the different roles the machines undertake and the varied terrains on which they are used have led to the development of a wide range of tyres. Tyres for sports machines tend to have a flat profile while utility machine tyres usually have a round topped profile. The sports tyres lend themselves to powersliding and provide good stability on medium to hard surface trail riding while the round-top tyre will perform better in soft terrain, biting deeper while also providing a softer ride. Many of the new generation of tyres designed by Carlisle are now of radial construction to offer increased traction, better puncture resistance and improved ride comfort.

Scottish Haulage Company Switches to Michelin

Scottish haulage company Ian S Roger has switched to an all-Michelin tyre policy for trucks and trailers following a successful in-house trial which saw a set of Michelin XDN2 Grip tyres on a drive axle return 260,000km with their first re-groove. Company director Colin Roger commented: “We initially trialled a set of Michelin’s and were amazed at the performance. Over the last decade we have fitted cheaper tyres to our vehicles in the belief that we would be saving money, but we never seemed to get any mileage out of them and suffered frequent punctures. It proved that in this business you really do get what you pay for.

“Our vehicles use a mixture of A-roads, motorways and occasionally go off-road when visiting livestock or agricultural customers, so tyres endure a hard life with us. XDN2 Grip tyres offer increased performance and traction over a variety of surfaces and, coupled with a complete Michelin fitment package, we have noticed a significant reduction in the number of tyre related breakdowns,” adds Mr Roger.

Bandvulc Cuts 20 Jobs

Leading retread manufacturer and fleet service provider, Bandvulc is to shed about 20 jobs at its factory due to reduced commercial haulage. The company, which has contracts with most of the leading supermarket fleets and the likes of Boots and frozen food giant Yearsley Group, has previously performed well in recessions as a result of fleets trying to save money. However, this time around managing director Patrick O’Connell has highlighted the fact that “smaller local firms,” such as Bandvulc, are not benefiting from large scale Government investment.

As a result the firm has reportedly “started the process” of reducing its workforce by about 20. “Bandvulc is a family company which is owned and operates locally. It is therefore especially difficult for us to face the fact that we must reduce the number of our employees. We are acutely aware of the problem it causes those affected, but we must run a viable company which will be strong and able to capitalise on the upturn when it comes to again to create good jobs,” O’Connell told thisiscornwall.co.uk.

CJ Bird Reports ‘Going the Extra Mile’ with Michelin

Welsh haulage firm CJ Bird Transport regularly clocks up 500,000 km on its Michelin drive axle tyres and 600,000 km on its Michelin trailer tyres thanks to an active programme of tyre husbandry carried out by independent tyre dealer Celtic Tyres. The Llantrisant-based company specifies Michelin as original equipment wherever possible, and the tyres’ longevity means many of the trucks it purchases never need to be fitted with a new replacement tyre during their life on the fleet.

Bridgestone Wins 12-Month Contract

Bridgestone and Truck Point have been awarded a 12-month contract by A W Jenkinson Forest Products to supply replacement tyres and tyre services to the company’s haulage fleet, which comprises more than 250 vehicles and 280 trailers. A W Jenkinson handles over 2.2 million tonnes of wood fibre, paper products and recyclables and is the largest bark processor in the UK. The contract will see Bridgestone UK supplying new tyres and tyre servicing will be carried out by Truck Point service provider Harolds Tyres of Penrith.

18 Times Around the World with Michelin XDE2

The circumference of the earth at the equator is a jot under 25,000 miles (or a tad over 40,000 kilometres, for those of you playing in metric), and even if it was possible to drive a vehicle around the world at its broadest point, the tyres would probably be a little less than pristine at the end. Not so for a Suffolk based Volvo FH12 Globetrotter XL 6×2 tractor unit fitted with a set of Michelin XDE2 drive axle tyres – while the vehicle admittedly hasn’t plied the roads of Africa, South America and Southeast Asia and driven through the world’s major oceans, the Michelin shod tractor unit has indeed travelled the equivalent of 18 times round the equator.

Varta CV Batteries Undergo Four-Year Test

Battery manufacturer Johnson Controls has undertaken a four-year test to confirm that its PROmotive range of calcium-silver alloy premium quality truck batteries provides greater performance than traditional lead acid batteries.

The test programme involved commercial vehicles fitted with PROmotive and traditional batteries, operating in the harsh cold climate of northern Scandinavia and also in southern Europe. Demanding CV applications were chosen, ranging from typical delivery truck stop start and tail lift cycles giving little time for batteries to recharge, to long distance haulage with trucks equipped with numerous heavy power consumers.

McPherson Ltd Selects Bridgestone and Truck Point Partnership

Bridgestone and Truck Point have won a four-year contract to supply Bridgestone truck tyres and service to the McPherson Ltd fleet in the UK. The fleet distributes prestigious alcoholic beverages for the whisky industry and also offers general haulage services via multiple locations.

Under the terms of the agreement, which took effect on 1 January 2009, Bridgestone UK will provide full supply of replacement truck tyres and total tyre management service through its national Truck Point service network.
