The Road Haulage Association is pleased that to date, 28 MPs have pledged their support to scrap the proposed 3p per litre rise in fuel duty, due on 1st August.
"It's great news that these MPs have come out in support of scrapping the August 3ppl increase", said RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning.
The FTA backed campaign FairFuelUK has been recognised for its tireless work in lobbying the Government in order to stop planned fuel duty increases and fight for lower fuel prices. In the same week that the campaign sees MPs from various political parties uniting at Westminster in an urgent call to scrap the August 3p fuel duty rise, the organisation created by Peter Carroll Associates won the prestigious CIPR 2012 Excellence Award for Public Affairs which applauded the organisation's work and credited its achievements in the category which acknowledged 'a campaign designed to inform the public policy agenda or influence the legislative process.'
Kevin Buchanan, managing director of Palletline, has added his voice to the continuing chorus of discontent with UK government fuel duty policy coming from the haulage industry. “The country needs to recover from reckless spending, but reckless taxing is not the way to do it. Hauliers are being targeted because they do not have a voice in Westminster equal to their importance,” he commented adding:
The Road Haulage Association's latest weekly fuel price survey – the most reliable guide to what hauliers actually pay for diesel deliveries to their depots – shows a national average price of 116.33 pence before VAT (139.60 after VAT).

Continental has added two larger models to its range of premium commercial vehicle tyres with the introduction of new, larger steer and trailer products for volume-optimised transport operators. The HSR2 XL for front steer axle is designed for higher load capacities, while the second is the HTR2 trailer tyre in 55 cross-section for use on high volume vehicles.
Continental’s HSR2 regional tyre range has been expanded by the addition of three new sizes. The German tyre maker has launched the HSR2 XL front axle tyre in size 385/65 R 22.5 for axle loads up to ten tonnes plus sizes 315/70 R 22.5 and 315/80 R 22.5, which offer an axle load of up to eight tonnes. All new sizes have been designed with the coming generation of Euro 6 truck engines and their heavier exhaust gas treatment systems in mind.

ATS Euromaster has joined the Road Haulage Association (RHA) as an associate member becoming the first national tyre service provider to sign up to the highest gold tier membership level. ATS-E says the membership will help build on its relationship with the RHA, while the association’s membership will benefit from having access to ATS Euromaster’s technical knowledge and tyre husbandry.

Murfitt Industries Ltd is understandably pleased Cambridge Crown Court chose not to proceed further with charges against the company related to a 2009 fire, yet some residents living near the tyre recycler have voiced their dissatisfaction with the court’s decision. Cambridgeshire-based publication Ely Weekly News reports that “residents whose lives were ‘devastated’ when a huge blaze broke out near their homes are furious after a court case collapsed.”
The high cost of fuel remains the biggest cause for concern amongst haulage operators, according to the July 2011 update of the Freight Transport Association's Manager's Guide to Distribution Costs. Commercial vehicle operators continue to be squeezed by rising operating costs and pressure for earlier payment terms from suppliers whilst facing downward pressure on haulage rates and lengthening payment terms from customers.
Techking has launched three new OTR and truck tyre products, the ETSA 14.00 R20 and two ETME 14.00 R20 applications. The ETMT 14.00R20 and ETSA 14.00R20 are designed for desert and sand road condition. The two applications can be distinguished by the labels ETME B and ETMT J, which are upgraded versions of tyres launched back in 2008.
Michelin reports that a pair of Agilis van tyres fitted to a vehicle owned by Cumbria-based courier Bryan Davidson have clocked up an impressive 353,000 miles – enough to have taken the van more than 14 times around the world. The 215/75 R 16C Agilis tyres were shipped as an original equipment fitment on the rear axle of Davidson’s 2004 Citroen Relay LWB Hi-Roof van from new and have just been changed – with the odometer reading 353,000 miles. The front tyres lasted around 120,000 miles.
Ministers from the Scottish Parliament are assembling an ‘alliance’ representing the tyre and insurance industries plus motoring organisations in order to focus on the role winter tyres can play in keeping Scotland moving during times of harsh weather, and one MSP hopes this focus will benefit the Michelin plant located in his constituency.
