Potato Fleet Trials Vacu-Lug’s Latest Green Retreads

Bedfordshire-based H.E. Payne Transport Limited and its customer, potato merchant Greenvale AP, are trialling a new generation of energy-efficient Duramold retread tyres produced by Vacu-Lug. Unlike other ecologically aware tyres, these products are actually coloured green to reinforce their environmental credentials, the tyres are fitted to a truck and trailer in the Greenvale AP-liveried fleet operated by H. E. Payne Transport on the nationwide distribution of fresh potatoes.

A total of ten of the new tyres have been fitted to the H. E. Payne / Greenvale AP Euro 5 440hp 6×2 Volvo FH13 combination.

Hankook Focuses on Eco-Tyre Trend

According to Hankook Tire’s vice president, Pae Ho-youl, green tyres will be the tyre industry’s “keyword” for some time to come. For this reason the Korean company is making substantial investments in this area. Pae recently told the Korea Times newspaper than Hankook had spent 20 billion won per annum while working on its enfren environmental tyre, which was released in 2008 following two years’ of technical development. Now the tyre maker has previewed its latest version of the green tyre, the ‘enfren eco’, at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Hankook says the enfren eco is designed with fuel efficient vehicles such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid in mind.

A Dream Realised for Cimcorp

Finland’s Cimcorp has long held the desire to develop a tyre factory in which every stage of the operation – from tyre assembly to final shipping – was automated. This idea has formed the core of the company’s so-called “dream factory” concept, and Cimcorp reports that in the past year this dream has become reality.

The company’s path towards a fully automated tyre plant began some time ago, and outside the tyre industry.

Pirelli Researching the Use of Rice Husk Ash in Tyre Compounds

From an ecological point of view, the new Pirelli Cinturato P7 offers three headline benefits – a CO2 emission reduction of up to 4 grams per kilometre driven, 30 per cent lower noise emissions and a 4 per cent fuel saving. Pirelli’s clincher (particularly aimed at current and potential OE customers) is that it is already in position to meet the targets set by the new EU regulations that are due to take effect from 2011 and that it does this without compromising on wet or dry performance. However, none of this explains how the company is able to achieve these goals.

In mid-February, Pirelli gave details of how its 2009 – 2011 industrial plan means the company will have an increasingly “green” focus. In particular Pirelli committed to developing a series of new materials that for use in tyre compounds. One particular silica rich material is rice husk ash (RHA). Pirelli is already (as far as the technological requirements are concerned) in a position to use this material in tyre production this year. However, the material is currently the subject of a large scale viability study focusing on the availability of the kind of tonnages needed for tyre industral scale tyre manufacturing. Tyres & Accessories understands that Pirelli already has research and development teams in place in Brazil and the areas surround Milan, which just happen to be some of the best rice production areas in the world.

Formula One Drivers Show Support for ‘Make Cars Green’ Campaign

Bridgestone Corporation says it will this year, as a global partner of the Fédération International de L’Automobile (FIA), continue its support and promotion of the global ‘Make Cars Green’ campaign. This announcement follows the first event of the 2009 Formula One season, the Australian Grand Prix, at which Bridgestone says the Formula One drivers showed their unanimous support for the campaign.

The Make Cars Green campaign aims to reduce the effect of cars on the environment by informing drivers of how to drive in a more environmentally friendly way. In partnership with automobile associations in countries worldwide, Bridgestone Corporation and the Bridgestone Group are calling on drivers to observe the “10 points for greener motoring”.

Chinese Tyre Manufacturers are Going Green

Domestic Chinese tyre manufacturers are taking step to produce more environmentally friendly tyres, according to a China Economic report. “The occurrence of [the radial] in 1946 reduced the tyre’s rolling resistance by 20 per cent and the ‘green’ tyre emerging in the 1990s further reduced the rolling resistance,” Head of Rubber Tyre Expert Group of Planning and Economic Committee of China Rubber Industry Association Chen Zhihong said, adding: “although it just begins, the ‘green’ tyre represents the trend of further energy saving and emission reduction via tyre.”

According to Chen Zhihong’s analysis the main way to reduce the rolling resistance is to use SSBR in combination with “mainly white carbon” fillers. In this scenario the “green” tyre can reduce the rolling resistance by about 26 per cent, save fuel by between 3 and 8 per cent without losing out on other performance characteristics such as noise and wet grip. Nevertheless, the “green” tyre is currently said to mainly be used by top-grade automobiles in China “as a result of its high cost.”

VMI Awarded Innovation Gong for Tyre Builder

Dutch tyre building machinery manufacturer, VMI has been presented with the award for Innovation and Excellence in tyre manufacturing for its new MAXX Tyre Building Machine at the Tire Technology Expo in Hamburg, Germany. An international jury said the major reason for its decision was the breakthrough in fully automatic tyre building.

The MAXX is newly developed machine able to produce high quality passenger car green tyres with a bead size of 14”- 24” with increased productivity: the building process is fully hands-off, with the loading of the beads and the unloading of the green tyre done automatically. The design includes moving drums and a fixed transfer position to allow for a more precise process, flexibility and speed. Laser measuring devices and digital cameras automatically control and record the positioning of components and quality of splices.

VMI reports that the first VMI MAXX is already in production in Finland.

Michelin Primacy HP to Benefit Vauxhall ecoFLEX

Michelin reports it has developed a tyre – the energy-efficient Primacy HP – specifically for Vauxhall’s new Insignia ecoFLEX. The tyre is said to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres, thereby lowering CO2 emissions by more than four grams per kilometre. In this way, the tyre contributes to the Insignia ecoFLEX’s notable performance in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which for the 160-horsepower vehicle are fewer than 140 grams per kilometre.

VMI Releases Two-Drum Tyre Builder

Netherlands based tyre manufacturing equipment maker the VMI Group reports it has designed and built a completely new type of tyre building machine. Called the VMI Maxx, the newly introduced unit is said to operate very differently from the company’s previous tyre building machines, such as the 248 and 348.

The Maxx is a two-drum machine for passenger car radials that operates according to the single stage building process. It combines, says VMI, a high level of flexibility with a substantial higher output and a better green tyre quality. The unit is designed to build tyres between 13-inch and 24-inches.

Michelin Claims Energy Tyres Saved Billions of Gallons

Michelin claims that more than 2.6 billion gallons of fuel have been saved and more than 27 million tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided because of its “green energy-saving tyres.” “The 600 million Michelin green tyres sold worldwide over the past 16 years have saved almost 12 gallons of fuel each second, corresponding to more than 240 pounds of CO2 kept out of the atmosphere,” the tyremaker said.

“With its green tyres, Michelin is actively helping to reduce the cost and environmental impact of road transportation, as tires can use up to one tank out of five for automobiles and up to one tank out of three in commercial trucks,” Michelin said. (Tire Review/Akron)

Saving Fuel & The Environment with Michelin Green Tyres

According to Michelin, more than 9.8 billion litres of fuel have been saved and more than 24 million tonnes of CO2 emissions have been avoided thanks to its green energy-saving tyres, marketed since 1992. The 600 million Michelin green tyres sold worldwide over the past 16 years are reported to have saved more than 45 litres of fuel each second, corresponding to more than 108 kilograms of CO2 kept out of the atmosphere.

Skyrocketing oil prices are impacting the entire global economy and reducing consumer purchasing power, observes the tyre major. With its green tyres, Michelin says it is actively helping to reduce the cost and environmental impact of road transportation, as tyres can use up to one tank out of five for passenger cars and up to one tank out of three in trucks. Michelin states its goal is to design tyres that help reduce fuel consumption while maintaining the same high performance in safety and tread life

Michelin: OE Customers Prepared to Pay Extra for “Green Tyres”

Analysts from the Société Générale report that Michelin representatives have, during a Roadshow event, expressed the opinion that OE manufacturers would be prepared to spend extra for environmentally friendly “green tyres.” The willingness to spend extra for such a product would no doubt be aided by CO2 emission reductions currently on the EU agenda; reductions of 120 to 130 grams per kilometre may in future be required.

Should Michelin’s predictions be correct, it will not only be the environment that benefits; while environmentally friendly tyres currently cost the consumer more to purchase, the manufacture of “green tyres” requires less raw materials, thus lowering production costs.

VMI Launches New OTR Radial Builder

Netherlands based supplier of equipment and services for producers of passenger car, commercial and OTR radials, VMI, has launched its first radial VMI OTR Tire Building system. This system utilises flat drum building technology and assembles green tyres in sizes between 17.5 R25 and 24.00 R35. Manufacture is performed in a single process, including the application of the tread. This unique method of assembling radial OTR tyres utilises the transfer rings and other technology already tried and tested in VMI’s tyre manufacturing equipment for truck and bus radials.

This high capacity OTR radial machine produces radials at a rate of up to 2.5 tyres per hour for 24.00 R35” tyres. VMI reports that downtime for size changes is low because of a minimum amount of tooling and the maximum use of universal computer controls.

VMI’s R&D team has been working for a year and a half to build the company’s first OTR radial machinery, and they are confident the end result will answer the needs of the booming OTR tyre market.

Michelin Introduces ‘Michelin Energy Endurance Challenge’

Given the important role played by endurance racing in its competition strategy, Michelin has decided to launch the ‘Michelin Energy Endurance Challenge’. Based on the 2007 Le Mans 24 Hours and the six rounds of the 2007 Le Mans Series, the scheme will see Michelin reward those teams that make the best use of the fuel they consume, expressed as an Energy Performance Index (EPI) calculated after each event.

Prizes will be awarded to the best-performing teams in all four categories (LM P1, LM P2, GT1, GT2). The Energy Performance Index is based on the following parameters:

Why Doesn’t the Government Ride on Retreads?

Influential members of the retreading community pulled off a successful media coup when their request for more widespread public sector use of retreads was featured in the Daily Telegraph. In the broadsheet article entitled “Green tyres get Government brush-off” RMA director, David Wilson, and former and current presidents (C-Tyres’ Gary Oliver and Bandvulc’s Richard O’Connell) spoke of their wishes to see the government support the retreading business. Its not an unprecedented idea. US president George Bush and Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi have both backed similar schemes in their countries. In the UK however, there has been no noticeable move towards enforcing the use retreads on the part of the public sector.
