Dunlop Zimbabwe to Receive Distress Fund Lifeline

Dunlop Zimbabwe, the country’s largest tyre manufacturer, is set to receive assistance from the local government’s Z$5 trillion Distressed Companies Fund. Industry and International Trade Minister Obert Mpofu revealed this week that the company was one of over 300 companies that applied for assistance from the fund. He said: “Dunlop is a very strategic company that we, as government, will not watch to the time it folds. On the part of government, we have resolved to make it one of the companies that will benefit from the Z$5 trillion facility that we unveiled for distressed companies”.

“Hello, I’d Like to Make a Super Complaint”

Did you know that the tyre business could be subject to a “super complaint” because of poor service in the wider automotive service sector? Did you know that it could cost you as much as £750 per depot if the government is forced to push external regulation on the business? During the recent NTDA conference in Marbella, this subject stood head and shoulders above the rest as most delegates were surprised to hear what a so-called super complaint might mean for them.

So what’s behind all this talk of an Office of Fair Trading (OFT) super complaint? Basically the National Consumer Council (NCC) believes that there are too many legitimate customer service complaints being made against the automotive service industry and the tyre trade is being tarred with the same brush in terms of potential consequences. The recent push for action from the consumer point of view also follows media reports highlighting the “garages don’t care” attitude fostered by many consumers.

Lawyer Brings Case Against BFNAT…Again

(Akron/Tire Review) Pasadena lawyer Joseph Lisoni has filed two new lawsuits against Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire, continuing his nearly four-year-old battle against the tyremaker. The new lawsuits, filed in US District Court in California, allege defects in BFNAT’s Firestone Firehawk, as well as previously recalled Firestone Wilderness and ATX lines. Lisoni is seeking the immediate recall of those tyres.

“Fifth Gear” Supports 3mm Campaign

The industry’s 3mm campaign has received support from top UK motoring TV programme Fifth Gear, which called on Government to change “dangerous” UK tyre tread laws. Fifth Gear presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson hosted a slot on the programme in July which showed the dramatic effect of worn tyres on stopping performance which travelling at 50mph.

India Proposes Quality Certification for Tyres

In a move that could remove the threat of cheap tyres imported from China, the government proposes to make quality certification compulsory for tyres manufactured and sold in India, says the Indian website of Business Standard. This would mean that only tyres that conform to the standard specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards can be sold and foreign tyres cannot be sold through local outlets.

Ease Congestion – Ban Elderly Motorists, Says Poll

Congestion on Britain’s streets is getting worse, but drivers polled by online insurance broker www.motorinsurance.co.uk have a novel solution: ban elderly drivers from the roads. Government figures suggest that almost nine in ten respondents felt that road congestion was a serious problem in the country . The solution, according to nearly half the drivers (49 per cent) polled, is a total ban on elderly drivers during peak periods.

BFNAT Decides to Axe Oklahoma City Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire has confirmed that it will close its Oklahoma, City, Oklahoma, passenger and light truck/SUV tyre plant. The plant, which opened in 1969, employs some 1,400 workers. The plant will be closed by 31 December, according to BFNAT.

VOSA to Target Foreign Trucks

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is to wage a year-long campaign, targeting foreign lorries on the roads of Britain. This follows news that Government inspectors have found that foreign trucks are more than three times more likely than British trucks to be flouting safety rules. One quarter of foreign truck drivers checked in the year up to the end of March had exceeded the maximum number of driving hours allowed between breaks; this compares to only eight per cent of British drivers. Romanian, Turkish and Irish drivers proved to be the worst offenders, while it was found that Romanian trucks were twice as likely as British lorries to have major safety defects, such as faulty brakes and bald tyres. VOSA plans to check 22,500 foreign trucks over the next 12 months.

Apollo Tyres Assists in Disaster Management

Following last year’s devastating floods in Mumbai, Apollo Tyres and CVONDM – a Maharashtra-based non-governmental organisation, have compiled a comprehensive disaster management booklet, which will be distributed to all Mumbai motorists. The booklet, which will comprise comprehensive disaster and road safety management tips as well as complete list of all emergency numbers, will be distributed free of charge to all motorists, to equip them with proactive steps and numbers, to effectively reach out as and when required and save theirs as well as their fellow motorists’ lives.

Fleets Don’t Manage Occupational Road Risk Well

Fleet decision-makers are failing to grasp the importance of managing occupational road safety with glaring holes in policies and procedures uncovered in a survey by Kwik-Fit Fleet. A nationwide survey of 162 fleet operators by corporate sales managers at Kwik-Fit Fleet, Britain’s largest independent fast-fit organisation, has uncovered a widespread failure to embrace best practice in numerous risk management issues.

Will Mozambique Government Sell Tyre Factory?

The Mozambican government may be preparing to sell off a derelict tyre factory on the outskirts of Maputo, according to the Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique news agency. The Mabor tyre factory was reportedly something of a national showpiece until it closed following a fire in December 2004. According to local news sources the state is now running what is left of Mabor through its Institute for the Management of State Holdings, IGEPE. The IGEPE is reported to have been looking for ways to reactivate the plant since it was “paralysed” and, of course, one solution is to sell the facility.

Vellco Gains ISO 14001 Accreditation

Over the past couple of years Vellco Tyre Control has embarked on an expansion programme that has led to a number of significant developments in the company’s evolution. Now, as news of a partnership agreement with Sapphire Energy Recovery breaks, Vellco has announced that it has ISO 14001: 2004 accreditation.

ISO 14001 is viewed by managing director, Chris Fell as perhaps one of the company’s most important accomplishments to date. “Although Vellco is not the first casing collection company to gain this endorsement, for a company in this sector of the market to be awarded ISO 14001 certification is an outstanding achievement and I am absolutely delighted,” he commented.

Environmental Award for Watts Industrial Group

The Watts Industrial Group has been awarded the prestigious BSEN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard by BSI. The standard is a benchmark for environmental control and the development of targets to reduce the environmental impact of the organisation’s activities.

The standard was awarded to the Watts group’s Gloucestershire site which covers rubber compounding from watts Industrial Polymers and the manufacture of industrial wheels by Watts Industrial Tyres, as well as the distribution of industrial tyres to the OEM and replacement markets.

Nigerian Government Joins IRSG

The International Rubber Study Group has announced that the Government of Nigeria is now a member of the Group. “Rubber production [in Nigeria] has been established on a significant scale since the 1940s. Rubber area increased in the early stage, but due mainly to the higher oil price, the area has been declining recently. Despite declining, Nigeria may still have the largest area under rubber in Africa at an estimated 145,000 hectares and hence a high potential for the future. NR consumption is relatively small and stable at about 16,000 tonnes a year, while SR consumption is about 5,000 tonnes per year,” the IRSG reported in a membership statement.
