Infinity Tyres Foundation supports Midlands Air Ambulance Charity

Infinity Tyres has announced its support of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, with the sponsorship of head of client services for M3 Communications in Shropshire, Nick Lovett, as he completes a 26-mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall this Saturday (10 September). Lovett, 38, from Cannock will be guided by experts across part of the wall, which spans 73 miles in total, and will be walking the marathon length one day challenge dressed as a Roman Centurion. Why? Because the largest ancient monument in Northern Europe’s timeline “dates back to the Romans and this gives me a chance to get a taste of the history of the place I’m visiting.”

ChemChina to focus on “scientific development”

State-owned China National Chemical Corp (ChemChina) said in its first Sustanability Report that scientific development will be the main focus of its next five-year plan (2012-2017). During 2006-2011, ChemChina put more than 12 billion yuan ($1900 million) into technology research, an annual increase of 14.5 percent. The company owns seven subsidiaries, including Aeolus Tyres, Guilin Rubber, Yiyang Rubber and the Xinghuo Organic Silicon Co, that are national technology centres.

Pirelli Slatina factory extension to make car tyre plant its biggest

The Prime Minister of Romania, Emil Boc has inaugurated the extension of Pirelli’s tyre factory in Slatina, accompanied by the Italian manufacturer’s chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera, and the Italian ambassador in Bucharest Mario Cospito. The full 160 million euro extension, begun in 2008 and to be concluded in 2013, will increase production capacity from 7 million passenger car units at the end of 2011 to 10 million by the end of the extension project and the extension of its area. Pirelli says the plant is already one of its most modern, and will become its biggest passenger car tyre plant when the extension is complete.

Unbelievable speculation: Kumho to withdraw from China?

News that Kumho Tire would possibly need to relocate its factory out of Nanjing, in China’s Jiangsu Province, first broke some six weeks ago, and the Chinese officials have now confirmed their decision. Kumho received word from the Nanjing Environmental Protection Bureau on its decision that it, along with 172 other companies in Nanjing, must move elsewhere. Chinese media sources, such as those reported by gasgoo.com, state Kumho’s Nanjing factory has “long since” been marked by the municipal government as one of the city’s “most polluted factories,” although details of offences are not given. Orders to cease production at the plant have already been given.

Cost of Swansea tyre fire exceeds £1.5 million

The estimated cost of tackling the Swansea tyre fire that burned for 22 days in June and July has been estimated at more than £1.5 million, according to a local news report by the BBC today. The former Mettoys factory, which was illegally housing around 5,000 tonnes of shredded tyres, was completely destroyed by the blaze. It is likely that the local council will be forced to foot much of the bill, though a Swansea council spokesperson said there was an ongoing attempt to recover some of the costs from the operation.

Hauliers warned that future low emission zones "are inevitable"

MIRA test centre named ‘enterprise zone' in government announcement

The MIRA test centre, which is home to tyre and vehicle research facilities belonging to the likes of Dunlop and GiTi, has become an official “enterprise zone” as part of a government announcement. Ministers said 30,000 new jobs would be created by 2015 at the 21 locations spread out across the country of which MIRA is just one. The idea is that by giving cheaper business rates, superfast broadband and lower levels of planning control, business aren’t hindered in their growth.

HiQ adds voice to MOT changes opposition

The opposition to the UK Government’s proposed changes to the MOT test has acquired another voice, as fast fit network HiQ makes the argument that doubling the length of time between legally required tests will eventually cost motorists more: “The pockets of motorists will be hit harder than ever,” HiQ stated. Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond hopes to introduce the initial MOT test for new cars after four years instead of three, as it currently stands today.

Hands-off optimum inflation the goal of US/European Goodyear research

Goodyear Tire & Rubber says it is developing a product that may make manual tyre inflation a thing of the past. The US-based manufacturer is working on what it calls ‘Air Maintenance Technology’, or AMT for short. What is potentially revolutionary about AMT is that Goodyear says the system now under development in its research and development centres will enable tyres to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics, thus eliminating excess fuel costs caused by incorrect tyre inflation. All AMT components, including the miniaturised pump, will be fully contained within the tyre.

Ruia resigns as Dunlop India director

Dunlop India Ltd has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange of Pawan Kumar Ruia’s resignation as company director, effective August 10. The chairman of parent company the Ruia Group now holds no official office at Dunlop India, having stepped down as chairman of the tyre maker’s Board of Directors on January 31, 2011.

UK study to explore battery recycling and reuse opportunities

In September, six British companies will get underway with studies into the feasibility of recycling and reuse of batteries for low and ultra low carbon vehicles. The six firms – Axeon, Energy Cost Advisors Ltd, LiFeBATT Ltd, Narec, OXIS Energy Ltd and TRL will carry out seven studies between them (TRL will perform two studies) at a total cost of just over £670,000. It is anticipated the studies will take approximately 12 months to complete.

Conti’s “hard conditions” too much for General Tyre East Africa

Tanzanian newspaper The Guardian reports its country’s government plans to hand over General Tyre East Africa to Tanzania’s National Development Corporation (NDC) in response to what it calls the “hard conditions” imposed by shareholder Continental AG. The country’s Industry and Trade Minister, Dr. Cyril Chami, is reported as saying talks with Continental, who holds a 24 per cent share in General Tyre East Africa, failed to reach a suitable conclusion. He attributes this lack of success to conditions Continental wishes to impose, such as restricting General Tyre’s activities to its domestic market and just two export destinations – Uganda and Burundi – and that the Tanzanian tyre maker should pay back its outstanding US$3.321 debt to Conti. Continental’s alleged lack of investment plans for General Tyre is another given factor.

Maxxis snow tyre tops Dutch Government tests

The most recent version of ‘De Nieuwe Band’ (The New Tyre), a list of tyres commissioned by the Dutch Government to highlight winter tyres that are safe, fuel efficient and low noise, found that the Maxxis MA-PW was alone among the 45 tyres tested to already meet forthcoming EU standards for wet grip, rolling resistance co-efficient and rolling sound emission.

Pirelli pledges to buy Italian bonds

Reuters reports that, in a move to alleviate the euro zone crisis Italy faces, Pirelli & C. SpA has signed a newspaper petition offering to buy government bonds. The tyre maker is said to be one of 24 Italian companies that added their names to a petition instigated by the business daily Milano Finanza.

Luxembourg introduces ‘winter tyres for winter conditions’ law

On July 29 the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg introduced a regulation making the use of winter tyres compulsory in certain weather conditions. As of October 1, 2012, cars will be required to have M+S marked tyres fitted when frost, ice, slush or packed snow is present; trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles will be required to have M+S tyres fitted to drive axles.
