Mechel, Marubeni sign Bridgestone supply deal

Russian mining and metals company Mechel OAO has announced the signing of five-year contracts for supplies of extra-size Bridgestone tyres with Japan's Marubeni Corporation. These agreements were signed by several Mechel group enterprises – Yakutugol Holding Company OAO, Southern Kuzbass Coal Company OAO and Korshunov Mining Plant OAO –on the sidelines of the official visit of the Russian Federation's First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov to Japan. The deals cover the supply of Bridgestone off-road tyres for heavy dump trucks. The contracts cover the delivery of more than 5,000 tyres.

PRA reacts to AA fuel price report

"Contrary to reports, independent fuel retailers have helped to lead fuel prices down recently with several reporting that they had dropped prices below local supermarket competition" said Brian Madderson, Petrol Retailers’ Association (PRA) chairman.

"Give up on fuel duty increases" FTA advises

In the UK, the Freight Transport Association hails the recent Parliamentary debate as confirmation that fuel duty has now become a mainstream political issue, and welcomes the suggestion that the Chancellor George Osborne may be about to cancel the increase in fuel duty planned for New Year's Day.

NDI China rethinking Qingdao location

Tyres & Accessories/Tyrepress.com reported from CITExpo 2012 that Danish tyre and wheel supplier Nordisk Dæk Import A/S (NDI) had made its decision to establish a location in China to distribute its products from this market to the world rather than re-exporting from Europe. While this eminently sensible move is still going ahead, NDI China general manager Gregers Lindvig informed T&A at Reifen China that the location of the operation is undergoing a change of plan.

PRA condemns "two-tier" petrol pricing

"Motorway Service Areas owned or supplied by major oil companies continue to extort their customers by pricing fuel much higher than at their standard company-owned sites" said Brian Madderson, Petrol Retailers' Association (PRA) Chairman.

Recent data produced by Experian Catalist showed that Shell brand petrol purchased at a Motorway Service Area was 14 pence per litre (ppl) more expensive than Shell brand petrol purchased at one of their standard sites. Diesel was as much as 12ppl more. The gap between prices for Esso brand fuel was very similar.

UK 2012 bus and coach market strong despite October dip

Total bus and coach registrations fell 23.9 per cent to 486 units in October, but climbed 44.9 per cent over the year-to-date. The purpose-built bus and coach market declined 35.3 per cent in the month, but rose 16.1 per cent during January-September. Converted bus registrations dipped 8.5 per cent in October, but rose 84.6 per cent during the first 10 months of 2012.

Linglong booth raided at SEMA

On 29 October Federal Marshals raided Chinese tyre manufacturer Shandong Linglong’s stand at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, according to a variety of news sources originating from reports by US magazine Tire Business. In what must be a first, even for the characteristically glitzy Las Vegas event, government officials confiscated the contents of the company’s exhibit as partial repayment of a $26 million court judgment against the company made in 2010.

Deadlock continues at Apollo factory

The deadlock between the striking workers and management of Apollo Tyres Ltd continues with both the parties not reaching a consensus over the issue of recognition of the new union at the company's plant at Waghodia, Gujurat, India, reports the online site Business Standard.

The strike, now in its tenth day, is likely to intensify further as workers have decided to go on a daily fast followed by a hunger strike. On the other hand, the company management has intimated to the labour commissioner that they are averse to the idea of recognising the union called Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh (BMS) formed at the plant.

FTA welcomes vehicle charging Bill

The Freight Transport Association has welcomed the publication of a Parliamentary Bill that will introduce a charge for foreign-registered vehicles using UK roads. Under the HGV Road User Levy Bill all heavy goods vehicles of 12 tonnes and over will be required to pay a levy before being able to travel on UK roads. For UK operators the Bill confirms that this cost will be rebated through an equivalent reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Operators of foreign registered vehicles will be required to pay the levy at a daily, weekly, monthly or annual rate, depending upon how long they intend their vehicles to remain in the country.

Consumers are being urged to fight back against 'clockers' by HPI, as it launches an e-Petition to DirectGov to close down mileage correction firms. Across the UK, these companies are turning back the miles on used cars, helping certain sellers push up the price of vehicles. 1 in 20 cars checked with HPI show a discrepant mileage, and this figure has risen by 10 per cent in the last five years.

A new hand has taken hold of the helm at the Tyre Industry Federation. The trade association reports the election of Bandvulc Group managing director Patrick O’Connell as its new chairman, with immediate effect. O’Connell replaces Yokohama HPT Ltd managing director David Seward in the role.

Hankook raises Hungary production output further

Hankook has further its European passenger car tyre production facility in Hungary with a total investment of around 8.6 million euros. The company says it will install a new compound mixing unit, thus significantly increasing the factory’s effectiveness particularly in the first phase of tyre production. The ground breaking took place on 1 October 2012 and, according to preliminary plans, installation will be completed in the second half of 2013.

Paul Fitzhenry becomes Goodyear senior vice president, global communications

Paul Fitzhenry has been elected by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s board of directors as senior vice president of global communications, effective 8 October.

Fitzhenry will report to Richard J. Kramer, Goodyear’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. As chief communications officer, Fitzhenry will be responsible for leading Goodyear’s global communications strategy and aligning it with the company’s business objectives, global strategy, and corporate mission.

Brake applauds LibDem vote on 20 mph speed limits

The Liberal Democrats voted overwhelmingly in favour of widespread 20mph limits, and government investment in this, at their party conference, which is taking place this week.

They called for local authorities "to give active consideration to introducing 20mph limits in existing residential and other suitable roads over the next few years, with schemes to be designed in consultation with local residents" and for a minister within the Department for Transport to be responsible for working with local authorities to achieve this.
