While many of the quarterly results released at the moment make for depressing reading, those published by Goodyear Tire & Rubber yesterday show that the US-based tyre maker is making even better than expected progress on the path back to financial strength. An obviously pleased Richard Kramer reported on 29 October that Goodyear “delivered outstanding earnings growth in the quarter and achieved a segment operating income margin of more than 11 per cent, the highest in more than a decade, despite an increasingly challenged global economy. The chairman and chief executive officer added that “these results reflect our focus on capturing the value of our branded products in the marketplace and continued progress generating cost savings through our operational excellence activities.”
Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD) has been chosen as the preferred commercial vehicle wheel supplier by TruckForce, Goodyear Dunlop’s truck tyre and breakdown assistance support network.
According to the company, the contract will encompass over 45 different wheel sizes ranging from 5.75” x 17.5” to 11.75” x 22.5”, most of which are available in either steel or forged aluminium for the truck, trailer and bus and coach segments.
Just over six months since the last time Tyres & Accessories met Michel Rzonzef at the Geneva Motor Show, the Goodyear executive has switched segments. When we met before he was vice president of the Consumer Tire Business at Goodyear EMEA. Now he is vice president of Commercial Tires EMEA. So, with the move from consumer to commercial still relatively fresh, T&A took the opportunity to discuss the development and direction of the truck and fleet tyre business with Rzonzef during the course of the recent Goodyear Fleet Symposium in Brussels on 14 October. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s global headquarters building in Akron has earned a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the US Green Building Council. At 639,000 square feet, it is among the largest LEED Gold certified buildings in Ohio. The LEED green building program ensures buildings conserve energy, water and other resources and are safer and healthier for occupants. Gold certification indicates Goodyear’s high level of investment in best-in-class building strategies and practices.
Goodyear today published a whitepaper culminating in recommendations including incentives for truck fleets to purchase high label-rated tyres and the mandatory fitment of TPMS in commercial vehicles in a way similar current rules for passenger cars. Other recommendations include: offering incentives for fuel efficient fleets; clarity on reforms to rules related to weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles; further guidelines on cross-border operations of larger vehicles; more support to make the most from new telematics technology like harmonized standards for telematics; and extra support from regulators to the road fleet sector to attract and retain skilled drivers.
The winners of the 2014 Tyre Industry Awards were announced on 8 October at the 85th annual NTDA Dinner. The awards once again generated wide interest within the British industry, with 14,000 votes cast across the five voting categories. In the Tyre Centre of the Year category, Encircle Marketing’s series of mystery shopping exercises dictated the winner; all four finalists were rewarded by a plaque.

UK motoring publication Auto Express has named the Dunlop Sport BluResponse the winner of its 2014 test of the popular 205/55R16 tyre size. The Dunlop tyre was rated the top performer in three of the nine test criteria and came second in a further two. Test runner-up was its Goodyear stablemate, the EfficientGrip.
Earlier this week, with reference to this month’s focus on the UK commercial vehicle tyre market we discussed how on average year-to-date, UK annual demand is reportedly around 80,000 tyres a month, which equates to 960,000 tyres a year (based on ETRMA figures). In the pre-recessionary years it went much further than this, but there was some doubt that market will quickly (if ever) return to levels of 110,000 a month? And has it shifted so much that it is now a five horse race?
Goodyear has produced a free young driver education toolkit for teachers to use across the UK. Primarily aimed at KS3 and 4 for use during PHSE lessons, ‘The Driving Academy’ toolkit focuses on teaching students about driving, driving theory and the importance, seriousness and responsibilities that go with it. The pack is supported and endorsed by the Driving Instructors Association (DIA) and includes an interactive video, lesson plans and work sheets, online driving simulator and competition opportunity. It is designed to be flexible and scalable to be delivered at different levels according to a school’s needs.
Following the completion of a period of transition, and with market volumes on the up, Goodyear Dunlop is aggressively pursuing sales growth, including winning some of the biggest fleets in the UK. Tyrepress spoke about the company’s expansion strategy with Goodyear UK and Ireland commercial director, Marc Preedy at the end of August.
Goodyear Dunlop has won the contract to supply tyres to Eddie Stobart, the UK’s largest haulage fleet. The five-year contract, which took effect at the start of August, sees Goodyear Dunlop supply new tyres largely based around the company’s latest generation Kmax product offering to Stobarts and will be service by the Truck Force network.
Goodyear has confirmed what many must have already realised – tyre makers build factories in economically favourable sites. The US doesn’t top any list of low-cost locations, and therefore the bid its home town launched to host a new factory planned for the Americas was always going to be a long shot. Akron City Council nevertheless declared itself “willing to do what it takes” to host the new plant – but its hopes have now been dashed by Goodyear’s chief financial officer, who has sent word that Akron – where Goodyear last produced car tyres in 1977 – is considered too costly.
