Goodyear, Nokian take honours in French tyre test

A test of five size 205/55 R16all-season tyres by French publication L’Argus has resulted in a joint victory for Nokian and Goodyear. The Nokian Weatherproof and Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen2 both gained 78 out of a possible 100 points in the evaluation of braking, handling, aquaplaning and traction characteristics. L’Argus reports that the Nokian tyre was top performer in the traction test and comes into its own in the snow, while the Vector 4 Seasons showed particular strengths in the wet, including during the wet braking test.

Goodyear steps up tyre retail involvement with new UK digital platform

Goodyear has launched its next generation website in the UK and Ireland. While not quite the pioneering retail strategy employed by the manufacturer’s US digital platform, the new site (www.goodyear.co.uk) has increased the company’s interaction with end-consumers – a reaction to the sustained growth in consumers researching their tyre purchase decision online. In an unusual move for tyre manufacturers’ own websites, Goodyear also provides a recommended sell-out price on its tyres, which indicates a step towards the retail activity of its American cousin, albeit without any sort of requirement of the retailer to honour that price.

Goodyear redeeming €250M in senior notes to make $8M saving

Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe B.V. will redeem all of its outstanding €250 million aggregate principal amount of 6.75 per cent senior notes due 2019, reported parent company Goodyear Tire & Rubber today. The redemption will take place on 14 January 2016 at a price that is 103.375 per cent of the principal amount of the notes being redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest up to that date.

New year, new business structure – SRI making changes in North America

Falken Tire Corporation has announced a realignment of its business units that accommodates changes brought about by the dissolution of the global alliance between parent company Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Goodyear Tire & Rubber. The realignment will take place in stages and begins on 1 January with the subsidiary’s renaming as Sumitomo Rubber North America, Inc.; Richard Smallwood, who is currently CEO and president of Falken Tire Corporation, will hold these positions in the retitled business.

Goodyear supplying tyres for Boeing 777X

Boeing says its new 777X, which is scheduled to begin arriving with customers in 2019, is the largest and most efficient twin-engine jet in the world, an airliner “unmatched in every aspect of performance.” As of 1 December 2015, the Boeing 777X programme had received orders and commitments for 306 aircraft, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber reports that it will supply tyres to each and every one of these planes.

Darren Wells sells $1M of Goodyear shares

Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s Darren Wells has sold 30,914 shares in the tyre maker for US$1,039,019.54. Wells, who steps down as president of the company’s Rubber’s EMEA business on 1 January ahead of leaving Goodyear early on in 2016, now directly owns 85,808 shares in Goodyear Tire & Rubber.

Juventus F.C. players appear in second Goodyear video

Players from Italian Serie A team Juventus F.C. have worked with sponsorship partner Goodyear to produce a short video that draws parallels between safety on the football pitch and on the road. Goodyear announces pricing of €250M European notes

Goodyear Tire & Rubber subsidiary Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe B.V. (GDTE) has priced a private offering of €250 million aggregate principal amount of senior notes due 2023. The notes will be offered by GDTE at a price of 100 per cent of their principal amount and will bear interest at a rate of 3.75 per cent per annum. Goodyear expects this offering to close on 15 December 2015, subject to customary closing conditions.

Goodyear truck tyres ready for ‘the Odyssey’

Following extensive testing in Spain and Morocco, the 2012 Dakar race-winning De Rooy team has chosen Goodyear ORD off-the-road truck tyres for the three Iveco trucks it has entered into ‘the Odyssey’, the 2016 Dakar race. The tyres to be used are size 375/90R22.5 Goodyear ORD tyres. This size is unique to Goodyear and replaces the 14.00R20 fitment the De Rooy team previously used. The size 375/90R22.5 tyre retains the same overall diameter and width as the 14.00R20 but the larger rim diameter provides greater brake clearance, thereby improving heat resistance.

Goodyear Dunlop offering €250 million of senior notes

Goodyear Tire & Rubber has announced that its European subsidiary, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe B.V. (GDTE), is commencing a private offering of €250 million aggregate principal amount of senior notes due 2023. The notes will be senior unsecured obligations of GDTE and guaranteed on a senior unsecured basis by Goodyear and certain of its wholly-owned US and Canadian subsidiaries that also guarantee Goodyear’s obligations under certain of its senior secured credit facilities and senior unsecured notes.

Kanahara appointed Nippon Goodyear president

Yujiro Kanahara has been named president of Nippon Goodyear Ltd, the supplier of Goodyear tyres to the Japanese market. He joins Goodyear following a 36 year career with Bridgestone Corporation, where he served in executive leadership roles in Japan and key markets around the world prior to his retirement from the company in 2014. Kanahara succeeds Dale Brackin, who served as interim president during the transition period since October when Goodyear acquired Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ 75 per cent interest in the Nippon Goodyear business.

Goodyear launches third generation of flagship ultra-high performance tyre

Goodyear has launched the next generation of its ultra-high performance summer tyre, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. The tyre is the latest in the Eagle series that has given the manufacturer many test wins and a track record of original equipment homologation. The latest version contains technologies that improve braking, handling and control performance in both dry and wet conditions; characteristics that were benchmark tested independently at TÜV Süd.

Goodyear Wranglers fitted to anti-poaching vehicles

Goodyear implements direct online sales in US

Last January at its annual dealer conference, Goodyear unveiled plans to launch direct-to-consumer online sales across the US through its Goodyear.com website. Since then, Michelin has bought into two large European e-tailers and Apollo has acquired another. Clearly 2015 has been the year that tyre majors have allowed their online retail strategies surface. And while approaches differ between manufacturers and markets, Goodyear’s US approach is by far the most direct. At the moment, this approach centres on North America, however what we learn from Goodyear’s case is valuable in any market. In mid-November Tire Review editor Jim Smith met with Goodyear’s Mike Dauberman, senior director of marketing and interactive, and Bill Friel, general manager of consumer dealer retail, and here gives Tyres per cent Accessories readers access to their conversation.

Goodyear to merge North, Latin America businesses

The announcement that the current president of Goodyear’s Latin America business, Jean-Claude Kihn, will soon become president of its EMEA region coincides with the news that Goodyear Tire & Rubber will merge its North America and Latin America businesses into one Americas business unit, effective 1 January 2016. The combined business will be known as the Americas business unit and be led by Stephen R. McClellan, currently president of Goodyear’s North America business. Marcelo Toscani, now vice-president of global manufacturing, will serve as president of the company’s Latin America operations and report to McClellan.
