Goodyear wins Auto Express all-season tyre test

Recognising the attractiveness of all-season tyres to the majority of the UK market, leading weekly magazine Auto Express has conducted its second comparative test of six products in the segment. Testing on the bestselling 17” size, 225/45R17, the magazine used the independent Test World facility, with support from Hankook, to test in snow, and Continental’s Contidrom to test in cold and wet conditions to represent winter, and dry conditions to represent summer. The full test also included two leading seasonal tyres, the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen-1 winter tyre and the Continental ContiSportContact 5 summer tyre, which showed that all-season products continue to represent a compromise; however the performance gaps in the tests most relevant to UK drivers may surprise critics of year-round tyres.

Goodyear in talks to extend NASCAR contract

NASCAR, the most American of all motorsport championships, has enjoyed input from Goodyear since the 1950s, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber has served as exclusive tyre supplier for NASCAR’s top three series since 1997. The tyre maker’s current contract with NASCAR runs until the end of 2017, and Motorsport.com reports it is now in negotiations with NASCAR regarding its involvement in seasons beyond this date.

Goodyear hones Vector 4 Seasons’ year-round capabilities

According to GfK sell-out data for the UK and five other key European markets, demand for all-season tyres in our region grew 37.7 per cent year-on-year in 2015. Last year’s increase followed similar and even greater growth in the preceding few years, and this marked rise in demand means all-season tyres are a very appealing product for tyre makers. The company credited with creating the all-season segment now shares the market with a host of premium, mid-range and budget products, yet continued innovation over tyre generations has helped Goodyear retain a competitive edge.

Expansion of Goodyear tyre plant in China begins

When Goodyear Tire & Rubber announced plans last month to close its Philippsburg tyre plant in Germany, the company gave increasing demand for larger rim diameter tyre sizes – and a lack of infrastructure for producing these in Philippsburg – as a justification for the decision. Rather than invest in new equipment for the factory, Goodyear has decided to increase capacity for larger tyre sizes elsewhere in the world. Today, the tyre maker announced it has broken ground on a US$485 million expansion of its facility in China’s Pulandian district. Goodyear chairman, chief executive officer and president Richard J. Kramer took part in a ceremony with Lu Lin, deputy mayor of the city of Dalian.

EMEA launch for Goodyear RM-4B+ range

In September, Goodyear Tire & Rubber introduced a 63-inch version of its RM-4B+ OTR tyre. Upon launching this 53/80R63 ultra-large haulage mining product, Eric Matson, Goodyear’s global field engineering manager (OTR), opined that the new size will become a “must-have for mining operations around the world.” This new 63-inch RM-4B+, along with five smaller siblings – three new releases and two already on the market in North America – are now available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Goodyear sponsors Pro Football Hall of Fame: video

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced its sponsorship of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The company has a long association with American Football, including the Goodyear Blimp’s aerial television coverage, which has run for more than 60 years. The Hall of Fame is located, like Goodyear’s headquarters, in Ohio, where the National Football League was founded. Hundreds of thousands of fans around the world visit the campus in Canton, where a $500 million Hall of Fame village is currently under development.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Cargo claims 10,000km more mileage

Goodyear has released a new light truck tyre that the company says can offer 10,000km more mileage than before. The successor to the Goodyear Cargo Marathon light truck tyre, Goodyear EfficientGrip Cargo reportedly enhances fleet mileage by up to 10,000km, improves fuel efficiency and offers enhanced grip, especially in wet conditions. 28 sizes will be available by May 2017, covering then 82 per cent of the market.

Update: Goodyear’s Philippsburg tyre plant to close next year

It appears that Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s will close its passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyre factory in Philippsburg, Germany by the end of next year, subject to consultation with relevant employee representative bodies. A ‘Form 8-K’ report published by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on 20 October states that Goodyear “expects to be substantially complete with this rationalisation plan by the end of 2017,” and estimates total pre-tax charges associated with the plant closure will be “between US$240 million and $280 million.”

Goodyear ‘boss napping’ in France: Appeals process commences

The appeals process for eight former Goodyear employees accused of taking two company managers hostage in France began last week, some nine months after a first instance court sentenced each to 24 months’ imprisonment for their involvement in the incident. While the original sentence requires the eight to serve nine months in prison and the following 15 months of the two-year sentence on probation, the public prosecution is being called upon to retain the sentence yet allow for the entire 24 months to be served as a suspended custodial sentence.

Goodyear to shut Philippsburg tyre plant in Germany

Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany has released a statement regarding the planned closure of its tyre factory in Philippsburg, northwest of Stuttgart. The closure will occur as part of the tyre maker’s efforts to reduce overcapacity for low-margin products. A timetable for winding-down production in Philippsburg has not yet been made public, and the plant’s closure will follow negotiations with employee unions. Some 890 jobs are expected to be lost.

Titan International shares LSW planting test results

Titan International’s Low SideWall, or LSW tyres have been sold to the UK construction sector for the past year, however they are also gaining acceptance amongst agricultural users over in the USA and are prized by many for their reduced soil compaction characteristics, as well as the reduction in road lope and power hop they bring. The Titan LSW agricultural tyres are sold under the Goodyear brand name.

Wingfoot Two: Second Goodyear blimp ‘christened’

A crowd of more than 2,000 spectators looked on last Friday as a ceremonial bottle of champagne was broken over the nose of Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s newest blimp and it was officially given the name Wingfoot Two. The 246 foot airship was built in the USA by German firm Zeppelin NT and is the second of the new-generation ‘blimp’ fleet to enter service. It and its older sibling the Wingfoot One, which took to the air in 2014, are 50 feet longer than the previous generation of blimps and, at 73 mph, can travel more than 20 mph faster.

UK drivers have most reservations about autonomous vehicles, says research

Whilst driverless technology may be on its way, hesitation remains amongst UK drivers, according to extensive research released today.

The new study, from Goodyear and the London School of Economics, found that 55 per cent of the UK drivers surveyed would feel uncomfortable driving on roads alongside autonomous vehicles, significantly above the 39 per cent average in 10 other European countries. However, 28 per cent of respondents said they would be comfortable driving alongside AVs, similar to the 30 per cent in the other 10 countries.

Marcotran: Goodyear best tyre choice

Spanish haulier Marcotran says Goodyear Fuelmax and Kmax truck tyre have made demonstrable savings on its fleet. Comparative tests run by the company show that on certain routes it can save almost 1,000 euros per vehicle per year by using Fuelmax tyres, and the high mileage offered by Kmax tyres makes them more economical on other routes.

Marcotran is a Spanish based international freight company. Its pan-European fleet comprises about 700 trucks and 1,200 trailers, with routes varying from mundane regional runs to the longest between Spain to Moscow.

Goodyear Dunlop retains Police contract

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Ltd is continuing its partnership with the UK Police Force that sees the tyre manufacturer supply, service and maintain the government-operated fleet. The news means the firm has been supplying tyres to the police for 15 consecutive years. The latest deal adds a further four years to the total.
