Last October Goodyear Dunlop announced plans to close its Philippsburg tyre plant in southern Germany, and these plans are now official: The tyre maker reports it has agreed to terms for a redundancy plan with the union representing the plant’s 880-strong workforce.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has reported its results for the first quarter of 2017, and these show unit volumes and income to be slightly down compared with the same quarter a year ago. Richard Kramer describes the latest results as “a great outcome given an environment of rising raw material costs and weaker demand.” The chairman, chief executive officer and president adds that Goodyear’s Q1 performance “is a result of the disciplined execution of our strategy.”
Three days, four hours and 54 minutes – this is the time Rainer Zietlow and his team took to drive their Goodyear-shod Volkswagen Amarok V6 TDI from Dakar to Moscow. Goodyear has opened its new Tire Test Laboratory at its Innovation Center in Luxembourg. The 2017 edition of Tyres & Accessories’ annual retail report shows that the overall number of branches controlled by the top 20 retail chains continues to grow. To market the launch of the new Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure, Goodyear is supporting Rainer Zietlow in his attempt to drive 5,000 miles from Dakar to Moscow in a world record time of less than four days. The German adventurer and his co-drivers began the world record attempt on Saturday, setting out from the Senegalese capital in a Wrangler-shod Volkswagen Amarok.
The Goodyear Kmax tyre range has been extended by the addition of dimensions for low platform trailers. The newest Kmax T tyres are 17.5-inch fitments and produced in five sizes for this rim diameter. The 3PMSF marked tyres will be available from May 2017.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will redeem all of its outstanding US$700 million in principal amount of 7.0 per cent senior notes due 2022 on 15 May 2017. The redemption price will be 103.50 per cent of the principal amount of the notes being redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest to 15 May 2017. The tyre maker intends to use the net proceeds from its $700 million offering of 4.875 per cent senior notes due 2027, which closed 7 March together with current cash and cash equivalents, to fund the redemption.
Directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have declared a quarterly dividend of US$0.10 per share of common stock. The dividend is payable 1 June 2017, to shareholders of record on 1 May 2017. The payout represents an annual rate of $0.40 per share.
With the Stelvio, Alfa Romeo has taken its initial step into the growing SUV market. This important new addition to the Italian manufacturer’s portfolio is expected to arrive in the UK this October, and Goodyear is the first tyre maker to announce that its products have been selected as an original equipment fitment.
During the company’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday, Richard Kramer stated that trends within the global tyre industry are playing to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s strengths and its strategy to drive profitable growth. This growth, he added, is best represented within the consumer tyre business by the rising demand for tyres with 17-inch and larger rim diameters – the market for this segment has doubled since 2010 and is expected to double again by 2020.
The latest tyre to join the Goodyear Wrangler family has gone on sale in European markets. The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure is designed to meet the demands of SUV drivers looking for a tyre with both on-road and off-road capabilities; Goodyear states that the new range provides “more robust off-road capability than the regular SUV tyre.” The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure is produced in 27 sizes for 15 to 19-inch rim diameters, with fitments available for vehicles such as the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, Mercedes G-Class, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser and the Volkswagen Amarok.
George Rietbergen (who was formerly Goodyear Dunlop’s UK and Ireland managing director before becoming the firm’s group’s vice president Commercial EMEA and then managing director, DACH) has been nominated to the board of Nokian Tyres.
