Major ports are busy places, and in order to improve preventative tyre maintenance and reduce downtime for the automated guided vehicles (AGV) used in the unloading of containers, Goodyear has extended DrivePoint to this segment. It calls this dedicated tyre monitoring system for autonomous port applications DrivePoint Heavy Duty.
When we first reported Goodyear’s provision of original equipment tyres to Cupra, the arrangement involved a single size of Eagle F1 SuperSport for the Formentor VZ5. The tyre maker’s OE supply arrangement with Cupra has since expanded with the selection of a range of Goodyear summer tyres as original equipment fitments for the Cupra Born, the brand’s first fully electric road car.
Goodyear dropped the Dunlop name from its UK operation back in 2019 when it adopted the Goodyear Tyres UK Limited moniker, and the tyre maker had made and continues to make similar changes within its various European operations. Next month it is Germany’s turn.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has published figures that show its third-quarter 2021 sales were $4.9 billion, up 42 per cent compared with a year ago. Of course, much of this increase was driven by the company’s acquisition of Cooper Tire, but growth still came in at 16 per cent with the benefits of the Cooper merger excluded. At the same time, Goodyear executives also reported that the company now expects circa 50 per cent greater Cooper merger-related synergies than before. Specifically, this means a benefit of $250 million in run-rate synergies by mid-2023 up from an initial forecast of $165 million. And what’s more, the company expects to realize approximately $20 million of these savings in 2021. No estimates for 2022 synergies are being released until at least the end of 2021 and more likely February 2022 when full-year 2021 data has been processed.
Following the news that Goodyear has retained the UK police fleet tyre contract, Tyres & Accessories contacted Crown Commercial Services in order to confirm which other tyre firms have succeeded in winning their part of the two government tyre supply contracts which together are worth an estimated £200 million.
Mickey Thompson’s Baja Legend EXP off-road have claimed 2021 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show Best New Product Awards in the Tire and Related Product category. Mickey Thompson’s ET Street Front drag tyre and Cooper Tire’s Discoverer Snow Claw were also named runners-up.
After conducting no less than five comparative evaluations for various Auto Bild titles, testing specialists Dierk Möller and Henning Klipp possess a solid understanding of which all-season and winter tyres are worth recommending, and which aren’t. Auto Bild has presented a summary of Möller and Klipp’s testing for the current season in its 42/2021 issue and at the same time has named its leading manufacturers in the all-season and winter categories. Goodyear is continuing its 25-year partnership with the UK Police Force by retaining the relevant tyre supply part of the Crown Commercial Service framework. This means Goodyear will “supply, service and maintain the government-operated fleet for an additional four years.” The Police tyre supply contract makes up a significant part of the overall Crown Commercial Services tyre supply framework which normally runs for four years at a time, but the last deal ran for five due to the pandemic and expired on 10 October 2021.
Goodyear’s HiQ Tyres & Autocare franchise network has beefed up its social media presence by debuting on the increasingly popular TikTok platform. It is utilising the app to publish “relevant and relatable content” and shares that the HiQ account has reached a high number of views, followers and likes within a short period of time – “which we hope has increased general awareness of our brand.”
The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season concludes with two consecutive races on the Bahrain International Circuit, and Goodyear says it is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the desert. The circuit layout may be the same, but the different race duration will bring interesting challenges for the LMP2 prototype category teams, all racing on Goodyear tyres.
Peter Gibbons is stepping down as chief executive officer of TireHub, the US-based tyre distributor jointly founded by Bridgestone Americas and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Ted Becker, TireHub’s vice-president of sales and marketing, will become interim chief executive officer once Gibbons leaves the company in mid-November to pursue a new career opportunity.
In North America, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company recently launched its RT-3B bead-to-bead retread. According to the company, the new retread provides “all-around performance on an array of underfoot conditions for loaders and graders and complements its existing line-up of premium off-the-road (OTR) retread tyres.
Earlier this year, Goodyear debuted its TruckForce Service Excellence Award. The initial round of honours and those following in the second quarter of the year saw a total of ten network partners, including two in the UK, awarded for their exemplary service and performance. Goodyear has now announced its TruckForce Service Excellence Award winners for the third quarter of 2021 and has acknowledged a further five partners who “share a goal to deliver high performance and initiatives that benefit their commercial fleet customers.”
The partnership between Goodyear and TIP dates back more than 15 years, and the two companies have extended this relationship with the signing of a new five-year contract. The latest agreement includes the Goodyear Total Mobility customisable end-to-end offering, which includes retreading, advanced Proactive Solutions and the support of a broad service network with over 2,000 locations in Europe alone.
All-season tyres have found favour with tyre testers in recent years, but Auto Bild points out that most tests focus on tyres for small and compact cars. To address a dearth of testing for sporty mid-sized saloons, the German motoring publication has evaluated 32 tyre models in size 225/50 R17. In Auto Bild tradition, the testers performed wet and dry braking tests to pare down the field of candidates to a shortlist of the 16 top performers. They then subjected the finalists to various tests in dry, wet and snowy conditions and also evaluated characteristics such as rolling resistance, mileage potential and price-performance ratio.
