The Austrian Dunlop and Goodyear companies have been integrated into the new Goodyear Dunlop Tires Austria company, which is under 100 p.c. ownership of Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe B.V. located in Brussels.

Tyre giants Michelin and Goodyear are to work together in the future on their run-flat systems PAX and EMT. A joint venture company has been formed, based in the Netherlands.
In a survey in the US, it seems that OE pull-through is an important factor and that the tyre recall has – according to Goodyear – stimulated interest in tyres. Before the recall, 36.7 per cent of respondents said they would choose Goodyear tyres and 21.4 per cent Firestones. During the recall, these figures changed to 55.2 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively.
There is speculation among analysts that Michelin and Valeo could be dropped from the CAC 40. Continental has been ousted from the DAX Index and Goodyear from the Dow Jones Index recently.
Goodyear recently turned in a bullish report on its first quarter performance. The market was impressed, as the company’s shares rose 47% from its 52-week low in March. Industry analysts predict a good performance from Goodyear in the short term, with shares rising further.
At a Goodyear warehouse in North Brunswick (N. J.) members of the all-white management discriminated against black employees, The Akron Beacon Journal reports, quoting court documents and statements of two Goodyear managers. The eleven workers have been in court for two years in order to get more than 100 m US-$ compensation for discrimination. Goodyear has denied the claim.
On Tuesday 17th October, Goodyear Great Britain submitted an HR1 notice to the Dept. of Trade & Industry. This document contained a number of options for improving productivity and lowering costs, one of which was for 540 jobs to be lost at the company’s Wolverhampton plant. The notice effectively gives 90 days’ notice for management and unions to find agreement. If no agreement is forthcoming at the end of 90 days, a solution can be imposed by management. The total labour force at Goodyear Wolverhampton numbers more than 2,000. This news comes the day after Michelin announced the loss of 950 jobs at its factory in Stoke-on-Trent.
After Continental and Goodyear, Michelin is now planning a price increase of 3%, which would be equivalent to absorbing an increase in raw materials (Rubber, Oil) of about 12%. Due to the fact that raw material prices are continuing to grow it seems unlikely that much of the price increase will benefit the manufacturers.
3,000 Turkish tyre workers returned to work yesterday after the Government had ordered a two-month postponement because of “national security issues”. The Government wants to reduce inflation from the current 60% to 20%. Unions wanted a 35% rise and were offered 26.5%, which was rejected. Last week the three main manufacturers – Brisa, Goodyear and Pirelli – took out a joint press advertisement attacking the action.
During a highly emotional press conference in Tokyo, Bridgestone’s boss Kaizaki again asked Ford to shoulder more of the blame. Kaizaki again pointed out that the recall in the USA is precautionary and, to date, no technical failure has been found. In Saudi Arabia, for example, the tyres have not caused – according to a joint investigation by Firestone and Ford – the problems. Firestone has never tried to cover up the facts, said Kaizaki (67). He refused to resign and said that he would take the responsibility for re-establishing the Firestone brand. A management shake up in Nashville seems likely, as soon as the recall is over. John Lampe, Executive Vice President for Bridgestone/Firestone USA, said during the hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee that Ford should share the blame. Official data on 16,000 Explorer rollovers, related to 600 deaths, show that in only a very few cases were there problems related to tyres. Bridgestone management is annoyed that, during Nasser’s call to Sam Gibara at the end of August, the Goodyear chief said that he had no knowledge of Goodyear problems in connection with the Explorer. Goodyear supplied two million tyres for the Explorer and there have been numerous proofs and photographs showing that Explorer accidents and rollovers had occurred with Goodyear tyres.
Armond Boyes has been appointed general manager of Goodyear’s North American retreading operations. Boyes is responsible for overseeing Goodyear’s Next-Tred retreading program, including the design, development and sales of Next-Tred products and the installation of retread plants throughout North America.

Goodyear announced that it is to be the official tyre supplier to the Canadian CASCAR Castrol Super Series, underlining the company’s commitment to stock car racing. Special Eagle tyres were developed in Akron and manufactured at the company’s racing tyre plant in Chile.
Once again, Goodyear has won the Golden Award from the BRV – the German tyre dealers association – for the passenger car and truck sectors. The prize reflects market- and customer-driven behaviour.
Goodyear and retreader/truck tyre dealer Treadco have announced the formation of a joint venture company, called Wingfoot Commercial Tire Systems. Ownership is 60/40 Goodyear/Treadco. Wingfoot will be the world’s largest network of cv tyre outlets and truck tyre retreading facilities, with coverage coast-to-coast.
