ISO 14001 Recommended For Goodyear NA

All of Goodyear’s North American manufacturing plants have been recommended for certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard. The plants were audited by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd. John Loulan, vice president of North American Tire operations said, “North American Tire is well ahead of the requirements set by major automotive manufacturers and also ahead of internal goals set for the end of 2002.” ISO 14001 is an international standard defining the requirements for environmental management systems used by an organisation to identify and manage potential impacts on the environment from its activities.

Indian Investment For Goodyear

Goodyear is set to invest the equivalent of US$ 36.4 million in Goodyear South Asia Tyres Pvt Ltd., the company which runs a tyre factory at Aurangabad, India. This follows a previous investment by Goodyear in 1999 of US$ 62.2 million. The factory produces tyres for both the OE and replacement markets.

Talks About Job Losses At Goodyear

Union officials at Goodyear’s Wolverhampton plant are seeking assurances about the future employment of 1,000 employees at the West Midlands tyre plant. Transport and General Workers’ Union spokesman, Peter Booth, is meeting company executives to seek assurances that current employment levels will be maintained. Failure to achieve that assurance could lead to strike action, he advised.

Goodyear Truck Force Full Service Supplier For Ewals

Ewals Cargo Care is a Dutch Fleet Company with around 2,000 trucks. Now the just in time specialist, which supplies parts to car manufacturers’ factories, has signed a contract whereby Goodyear Truck Force becomes the exclusive partner in tyre support and tyre service. In this way new tyre sales, retreading and (breakdown) service will be sourced from a single supplier.

Goodyear Sells Chemical Business

Goodyear has sold its speciality chemical business to Littlejohn & Company, a Connecticut-based private company, for an undisclosed sum. The chemical business is based in France and had sales of over $120 million in 2000; its sale is part of Goodyear’s strategy to dispose of non-core assets and reduce debt.

Investor Update From Goodyear

Goodyear has published its monthly investor update, giving brief details of the company’s performance in various world markets. In North America in October, industry shipments of OE and replacement tyres fell. Goodyear made production cutbacks, which continued during November. European industry-wide replacement tyre shipments fell for both passenger and commercial and Goodyear’s sales followed this trend. For OE, Goodyear shipments of consumer tyres were up on last year while those of commercial tyres fell. In Eastern Europe, Goodyear’s shipments of OE and replacement tyres fell from October 2000 levels. Replacement shipments in Latin America fell and OE shipments rose, while in Asia, OE and replacement shipments both rose.

New Structure At Goodyear USA

In the USA, Goodyear has appointed Ted J. Fick to the newly-created position of vice president, commercial systems, which makes him responsible for leading Goodyear’s commercial tyre business unit in the North American market. Fick joins Goodyear from Toyota subsidiary Hino Diesel Trucks, where he was senior vice president and COO. This is one move in the introduction of a new structure, focused on distinct business segments; eight US regional offices will be closed and functional support activities run from Akron.

Logistic Centre Opens In Poland For Debica

Jarro Kaplan, Goodyear’s President for Middle and Eastern Europe, Africa and the Near East, recently officially opened the new Debica logistic centre in Tarnow, Poland. The storage area is 30,000 square metres and the warehouse has 30 loading docks for trucks. 200 new jobs have been created and the investment is estimated at $12 million.

New Tyre Concept From Goodyear

Concerning tyre design its no longer the geometric dimensions which represent the state of development, but rather the intended application. Goodyear is meeting this challenge with its most recent generation of radial tyres, the “Optitrac” product family. Segmentations which were popular in the 70s or 65s series have been replaced by the terms “wide” or “volume”. The launch of the Optitrac DT818 as a super-wide tyre and the DT824 as a volume tyre is regarded as a considerable step forwards towards the completion of this concept.

Management Change At Goodyear Dunlop Europe

Henry Johnson, who was VP Goodyear Eastern Europe and then VP Goodyear Dunlop/Europe, has now been appointed Managing Director of the SBU (Sales Business Unit) Truck Tyres Europe. His successor is Arthur de Bok, who was previously with Procter and Gamble.

Exclusive Race Deal With Goodyear/Dunlop In US

The Grand American Road Racing Association has chosen Goodyear and Dunlop as exclusive tyre suppliers from next year to 2004. Goodyear radials will be used exclusively in Grand Am’s SportsRacing Prototype I and GTS classes, and Goodyear bias-ply tyres will be used in the American GT class. Dunlop will be the exclusive tyres for the SportsRacing Prototype II and GT classes.

DaimlerChrysler Awards For Eight Goodyear Plants

Eight Goodyear factories have earned the DaimlerChrysler Gold Award, given in recognition of outstanding service. Seven of the plants are in North America and one is in Europe, at Philippsburg, in Germany. Goodyear was rated as “excellent” in the areas of quality, delivery, competitive pricing and technology and “acceptable” in customer support.

Analysts Rate Goodyear Shares A “Buy”

Despite the admission of chairman and CEO Samir G. Gibara that Goodyear’s 4Q results were “disappointing”, some financial analysts have recommended the company’s shares as a “buy”. The results were better than forecast, plus the analysts are confident that Goodyear will start to turn things around before long.

Threefold Increase In Goodyear Aircraft Tyre Production

On the eve of the Paris Air Show, Goodyear announced that it was to triple production of radial aircraft tyres at its plant in Danville, USA, where the company has recently invested $10 million. The production increase is in response to growing demand due to increasing radialisation in the aircraft tyre sector, although bias-ply tyres still make up the majority of this market. The radials will fit military and private planes, as well as commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.

DT818 And DT824 Complete Goodyear’s Optitrac Product Family

Only a few weeks before the start of the Agritechnica fair, Goodyear presents its brand new “Optitrac DT818” and “Optitrac DT824” tyres – the latest additions to the Optitrac family of agricultural tyres, to which the super volume tyre DT830, introduced at the end of last year, also belongs. The DT818 is the family’s super-wide tyre, created primarily for use on today’s higher horsepower tractors with large implements. According to the tyre manufacturer, the DT824 is the perfect choice for very heavy machinery including harvesters and combines. Both tyres hold a much greater volume of air than standard-width tyres, and, because they are wider, have a much larger “footprint”. The weight is distributed over a greater surface area, reducing the pressure at any single point and minimising soil compaction which has negative effects on the plants‘ development. The DT818 and DT824 have also been designed for optimal traction in all types of weather. They feature deeper, more powerful curved lugs for greater draw-bar pull and broad square shoulders provide extra grip. The tread area between the lugs has been specially shaped for better self-cleaning of the tyres. During the presentation of the new tyres Serge Daleiden, responsible for the farm tyre division in Europe at Goodyear, mentioned that future developments in the farm tyre sector could possibly also include the company’s BioTred technology. “This is not a promise, just an idea”, said Daleiden.
