Goodyear Names New Technology Director

Goodyear has appointed Jon Bellissimo as director of technology for the company’s commercial tyre systems. Mr Bellissimo previously served as director of global technology for Goodyear Engineered Products a position has held since August, 2000. The company says Mr Bellissimo’s experience in tyre modeling and composite science will “contribute to expediting new technologies in medium truck tyres.”

“We plan to lead in ‘smart’ truck tyres that use computer chips to improve tyre maintenance and increased miles to removal,” said Steve McClellan, Goodyear’s vice president commercial tyre systems, North America region. “Through Goodyear computer modeling, we are gaining product leadership in line haul and regional haul steer tyre application, line haul drive and urban steer position,” Mr McClellan added

USWA Ratifies Contract at Goodyear Mould Facility

The USWA has reported that members in Statesville, North Carolina plant have “overwhelmingly ratified a three-year contract with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The agreement represents the first the first contract at the plant since workers collectively chose the USWA as bargaining representative in February 2004.

According to the USWA, 95 per cent of those eligible to vote were in favour of the new agreement, which provides workers with a network of job security measures. “Provisions that restrict the company’s ability to contract-out work will maximize the utilisation of our skilled and experienced members,” said local union negotiating committee member, Terry Gentle.

“We’re pleased that we have reached an agreement with Goodyear-Statesville that makes our members in Statesville partners in the ongoing turnaround of this company,” added Tom Drescher, local union negotiating committee member.

The USWA represents 130 employees at the Statesville facility. Overall, the USWA represents more than 18,000 members employed at 14 Goodyear tyre and engineered product facilities throughout the US. First contract negotiations continue at facilities in Asheboro, NC and in Utica, NY.

Runflats in Europe from Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany

In the middle of November Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany in Hanau inaugurated a new manufacturing facility for runflat tyres. The company has invested approximately 250 million euros into its German locations over the last three years. In Hanau Goodyear Dunlop can produce about 3,000 runflats a day, a similar production facility is in Fulda factory. Goodyear Dunlop produces 26 million tyres per year and sells about 40 million. 14 million of the German produced Dunlop tyres are exported to sister companies. This year alone, the company in Europe sold 1.3 million DSST (Dunlop Self Supporting Technology) and Goodyear EMT (Extended Mobility Technology) tyres, making it market leader in this segment.

Goodyear Reports Better Than Expected Results

Goodyear has officially reported third quarter results that show “record sales and positive net income.” According to the company the improved figures were driven by improved operating results in all seven of its business segments.

Goodyear Appears to be on The Right Track

Rivals Bridgestone, Michelin and Continental published turnover and earnings figures last week, something that could only serve to put pressure on Goodyear. The US tyre manufacturer will publish its third quarter figures on 9 November, but unofficially the management signalled that the company had again made a small profit after a profitable second quarter.

For Goodyear, any profits are very welcome. After three catastrophic years with losses totalling more than $2 billion, it is expected that Goodyear will reach “a red zero” at the end of the year. But, it is painful to see that Goodyear, after having paid well over $100 million in fees for the restatements of 1999 to 2003, is in trouble again regarding accounting irregularities. Analysts agree that it is “unnerving” that Goodyear has been unable to overcome these problems.

New Business Development Manager for Goodyear

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed Joseph Copeland as senior vice president of business development strategy and restructuring. According to the company, the new appointment combines the business development responsibilities previously led by Rick Navarro, as well as the strategic and restructuring initiatives that were part of the previous assignment of chief financial officer Richard Kramer.

EU Report Gives Luxembourg Second Place For Research

The former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Wim Kok, has presented an interim report to the European Union, pursuing the goal of making the EU the strongest economic power in the world, by 2010. The report found that Luxembourg fares well, already in an “above average” position. The research summarised a countries potential to grow based on the number of scientists per thousand. With a European average of 5.7 per thousand, Luxembourg was found to have the second largest proportion in Europe, with 8.78 researchers per thousand. Only Finland has a higher number of research scientists. Luxembourg was less successful in other categories.

The reason for Luxembourg’s impressive standing is because of the number of private research centres based within its borders. Luxembourg is the home of a number of significant research centres including, Goodyear, DuPont and Delphi.

Currently the Lisbon Strategy is a long way away from its goal of making Europe the strongest developed economy in the world.

Goodyear Wrangler Selected for 2006 Hummer H3

Goodyear has been chosen to supply tyres for the latest Hummer, the 2006 H3 model, which is due to arrive at dealerships in spring 2005. With its off-road capabilities the new H3 will be positioned among the mid size SUV segment. According to Hummer, the H3 will also provide “the refinement, comfort and convenience required for on-road driving.”

Bidding War for NASCAR

Goodyear currently supplies tyres to NASCAR’s top three professional series through an exclusive contract the tyre manufacturer has until 2007. However there are reports that Bridgestone/Firestone and BF Goodrich are keen to launch a competitive bid for the contract when Goodyear’s agreement runs out.

Autocar magazine has published its annual tyre tests this week, with Goodyear dominating the results. The independent tyre test compared five leading tyre brands in the UK, across two categories of car.

Goodyear Gets a Gold Star

Goodyear has received an award at the American Point-of-Purchase Show for the “creative merchandising and selling tools” that it used to support its line of Assurance tyres.

The show focuses on the best in-store marketing ideas used and three of Goodyear’s Assurance items were honoured with awards.

Hi-Q Trains Flat Out

Tyres fitters at Hi-Q branches up and down the country have completed the training necessary to fit run flat technology, the company has announced. Hi-Q’s operations manager Mike Garwood said run flats should only fitted by highly trained staff, adding: “They’re radically different from conventional tyres. Run flats are designed by experts: they must be installed by experts. Hi-Q is the only nationwide network to have been trained by Goodyear and Dunlop. We have the equipment and trained personnel to do the job safely and competently.”

Goodyear Dunlop spokesperson James Bailey said his company had worked closely with Hi-Q to develop a training programme that made sure staff who fitted its safety tyres were qualified experts. “Courses within the industry are rarely as rigorous as this: passing it should give motorists peace of mind that our tyres are being fitted properly and safely. Although run flats must be fitted by experts, they’re not just for specialists. These tyres can be fitted to almost any wheel rim, and their popularity is growing at such a rate that they’re quickly becoming standard for any motorist who refuses to compromise on safety.”

Ford’s Harley-Davidson Truck to use Goodyear Wranglers

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive tyre supplier for the 2005 Ford Harley-Davidson F-Series Super Duty, a truck that becomes available in November. The four-wheel drive truck features 20 inch Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tyres, along with an optional 6.8-litre V-10 or 6-litre diesel V-8 engine.

“Supplying the tyres for one of the toughest, most popular trucks on the road is a job Goodyear is proud to claim,” said Mike Parnell, Goodyear’s vice president, original equipment. “This truck is an eye-catcher, and we want the tyres to play an important role in that appeal.” The truck will use Wrangler AT/S tyres in the LT275/65R20 size.

British television viewers are in for a tyre lesson next week, as Granada’s ‘Men and Motors’ will be broadcasting a documentary called ‘Life of Tyres.’ The programme will trace the history of tyre development from John Boyd Dunlop’s initial pneumatic tyre to today’s latest technical advances.
