Goodyear Texas Factory To Close

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced the forthcoming closure of its tyre manufacturing facility in Tyler, Texas, as part of the company’s previously announced strategy to exit certain segments of the private label tyre business. When it made the private label announcement in June, Goodyear said that the decision would require a corresponding reduction in North American Tire’s manufacturing capacity and that plant performance, capabilities, cost savings opportunity and the focus on serving NAT customers would dictate capacity reduction.

Goodyear Names New OE Tyre Leader

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has named Johann Finkelmeier vice president and general manager of original equipment tyres in the company’s North American tyre unit. Finkelmeier will report to Larry Mason, Goodyear’s North American president of consumer tyres. Finkelmeier most recently served at Akebono North America as executive vice president, global strategy and business development OE/OES sales. Prior to that post he was president of ThyssenKrupp Steel North America, in Detroit.

“Skeleton Staff” Puts Strikers’ Case

Strikers outside the Goodyear plant at Akron have been joined by a new ally; members of United Steel Workers of America (USWA) have put up a skeleton with a sign accusing Goodyear of “picking us to the bone.” The pickets have also erected tombstones with names of cities—Akron, Buffalo, Gadsden, Lincoln, Union City—that the strikers say are dying as rubber industry plants are closed.

McConechy’s Profits Down

McConechy’s Tyre Services has blamed one-off restructuring costs for a fall in underlying profits. The company, which has 50 branches, recorded an operating surplus of £642,588 in the 12 months to 30 April, down from more than £1.2 million in the previous 12 months. Sales were flat at £31.5 million.

Goodyear Borrows $1 Billion As Precaution Against Prolonged Strike

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has significantly enhanced its cash position by borrowing nearly $1 billion under an existing revolving credit facility. The company said it borrowed approximately $675 million on October 13 and $300 million on October 5 under its $1.5 billion U.S. First Lien Credit Facility. Thus, this particular facility is almost fully drawn, when including its $500 million deposit-funded facility.

Goodyear to Layoff 330 Due to Strike

(Akron/Tire Review) With most of its North American tyre plants on limited production, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is temporarily laying off some 330 hourly workers at its Asheboro, North Carolina, steel wire plant. The tyremaker is reducing steel wire production due to the United Steelworkers’ strike. The temporary layoffs will begin Friday and will last until the strike is settled and Goodyear’s tire plants are back to full production.

Steelworkers Say They Can Stay Out. But For How Long?

(Akron/Tire Review) So just how long can the United Steelworkers stay on strike against Goodyear? According to the USW, the union is well-prepared for a lengthy strike. The USW says it has some $150 million in its “strike and defence fund,” and the fund is set up to pay each striking worker $100 per week ($115 after the 10th week). This all kicks in after the fourth week of a strike.

Lots of Rumours, No Movement as Strike Continues

(Akron/Tire Review) There has been more talk than talking as the United Steelworkers’ strike against 16 Goodyear plants reached its sixth day yesterday. Formal talks between the tyremaker and the union have not resumed, and while both sides say they are ready to restart negotiations when the other party is ready, neither side seems to be in a hurry to get back to the bargaining table.

Sava Tires Moves Within Goodyear

Goodyear-owned tyre maker Sava Tires, one of Slovenia’ largest exporters, has become part of a new organisational structure of 11 Central and Eastern European countries. The move has reportedly been made to make the company more responsive and does not entail moving production away from Kranj, Sava Tires said in a press release on 2 October.

Goodyear Prepares for Long Strike

No-one was surprised when the United Steelworkers Union announced its Goodyear-employed members would go on strike on Thursday 5 October. Now, days later with no news forthcoming from either side, it looks like 14,600 Union workers at 12 of Goodyear’s US plants and four additional plants in Canada, are preparing for the long haul.

Some analysts say the strike could cost Goodyear $2 million a day. Others are less optimistic. One Deutsche Bank report suggested that for each day Goodyear workers are burning wood on the picket line, Goodyear would be burning $5-6 million. Some analysts put the figure even higher.

Goodyear Makes Fortune 500 List

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. appears at no. 327 on Fortune’s Global 500 list this year, with $19.7 billion in turnover; a 7.4 per cent increase over the previous year. In the 2005 list, the company was ranked no. 330 and its 2005 profits were $0.2 billion, up 98.6 per cent from a year earlier.

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tyres in size P215/65R17 will be the OE tyre on the 2007 Jeep Compass, a new compact SUV from DaimlerChrysler. The Wrangler SR-A is a tyre that features all-terrain traction and on-highway quiet. Its aggressive tread pattern is also designed for a smooth, quiet ride, said Goodyear.
