Goodyear Appoints New Airship PR Manager

Not everyone get the opportunity to be the public face for a blimp, but in the US Sara Waldman has taken on this perhaps unique position. Goodyear has announced Ms Waldman’s appointment to the role of public relations manager for the airship “Spirit of Innovation.” In her new position, Ms Waldman will be responsible for strategic and day-to-day public relations, marketing support communications, media outreach, community affairs and scheduling activities surrounding the airship’s operations from its base in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Goodyear Dunlop to Supply 100,000 Tyres to Police

Goodyear Dunlop has announced that it will work in partnership with the National Policing Improvement Agency, making it the main supplier of tyres to over 50 Police forces in the country. The announcement names Goodyear Dunlop as the exclusive tyre framework supplier and service provider and will see over 100,000 Goodyear Dunlop tyres fitted to police vehicles, including patrol cars, motorcycles and public order vans, each year for the next two years. The deal covers the country’s 52 constabularies located throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

New Goodyear Dunlop Europe Truck Tyres Marketing Director

Boris Stevanovic has been appointed Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe BV marketing director for truck tyres, and in this role will be responsible for the company’s operations in this sector within Europe. He takes over from Pietro Saletta, who moves to Italy and begins as the company’s European director of Consumer Tires.

Mustang GT500KR Fitted With Custom Goodyears

Goodyear has developed an ultra-performance rubber compound for their Eagle F1 Supercar tyre, which has won exclusive fitment rights on Ford’s new Mustang GT500KR. Carroll Shelby’s newly designed KR model will become the first production car to use the tyre in the US.

To mark out those tyres fitted on the Mustang, the Goodyear Wingfoot symbol will be emblazoned on the outboard sidewall in the tradition of the original customised appearance of the company’s Blue Dot HPs, which were fitted initially on the first-ever 1965 Shelby Mustang carrying, somewhat unsurprisingly, a blue dot.

14-Day Turkish Tyre Strike Ends

A two week tyre strike by 4,000 members of International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions (ICEM) Turkish affiliate Lastik-İş ended on 13 June, and workers from three tyre manufacturers resumed work the following day. The strike ended when a two-year accord was reached between the union and three global companies, Goodyear, Bridgestone and Pirelli, who jointly represented the tyre industry in talks.

The negotiations on 13 June were the first since the strike began on 31 May. Talks first began on a 2008-2009 labour agreement, covering four tyre factories, in September 2007. The two parties agreed to a 14 per cent pay increase for 2008, and an increase equalling the Turkish rate of inflation for 2009. In 2007, the Turkish rate of inflation was 8.39 per cent and is expected to rise above that this year. Lastik-İş had sought a 12 per cent wage rise for the first six months of 2008, with increases matching the inflation rate in each six-month period through 2009.

Goodyear’s Ben Crawley ‘Highly Commended’ in Marketing Awards

Goodyear Brand Manager Ben Crawley is celebrating after being highly commended at this year’s Marketing Society awards held at the London Hilton. Crawley was one of only two selected as a finalist from across the UK, in the society’s Young Marketer of the Year Award which recognises industry leading performance from marketeers under the age of 30.

Goodyear uses a mix of media to communicate its message of safety and the brands unique safety partnerships are the main focus of this initiative. By becoming Safety and Innovation partner of the RNLI, Mountain Rescue and British Eventing, Goodyear has been able to communicate a message of family safety to a much wider target audience. Communications have included cause related marketing via Goodyear’s award winning HydraGrip tyre renowned for its safety in the wet, where 50p per tyre was donated to the authority on water safety, the RNLI and the issuing of thousands of safety arm bands to horse riders across the UK through its partnership with British Eventing.

The Long and the Short of It

In Europe more than 80 per cent of total freighted transport is shipped by road. This huge chunk of the logistics industry has been secured courtesy of two main benefits offered by truck transport, plus one disadvantage apparent in the primary alternative. Despite this position of dominance, ever-rising operating costs make optimising value for money a growing priority in all aspects of the business – not least in choice of tyre. Dunlop’s introduction of two key products for the regional and long haul sectors is intended to meet this need plus deliver the safety and handling features drivers have come to expect from the brand.

The popularisation of supply management techniques such as just-in-time since the 1970s has made the delivery of just the right amount of materials exactly when needed a matter of vital importance, and if multiple deliveries of varying product quantities are needed, road freight is clearly the most logical option. Furthermore, the point to point delivery offered by trucks eliminates dependency upon a railhead or other freight interchange facility. Thirdly, those arguing that a shift to rail transport would clear our congested motorways – perhaps a notion many have entertained on occasion – are most likely unaware of how little coordination occurs between Europe’s 25 or so national rail networks. Although a 2003 EU directive permitting the formation of private rail freight operators has brought about a more competitive environment, rail has yet to deliver a product matching road transport in terms of speed and flexibility of delivery.

Two-Thirds of Jobs to Go at Goodyear Tyler Plant

About two-thirds of the remaining workforce at Goodyear’s Tyler, Texas facility will be made redundant in August. According to the Tyler Morning Telegraph newspaper, the tyre major has informed the United Steelworkers Union of its plan to lay off approximately 110 people between August 6 and 19. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice received by the union stated the “permanent mass layoff has been necessitated by a lack of work at the plant.”

HiQ Decides Against Management Buyout

Goodyear Dunlop UK’s management has decided not to sell the HiQ tyre chain to a team of four managers led by retail director Neil Burrows. Instead the company will continue with its plans to sell franchises in 15 regional zones across the UK. HiQ’s management team will be based at Goodyear Dunlop’s TyreFort in Birmingham. Tyres & Accessories understands that, despite missing out in the bidding process, all four managers involved in the buy-out proposal will be offered roles at Goodyear Dunlop.

Mark Brickhill paid tribute to the quality and vision of the Management Buyout Team’s proposal: “The team presented a thoroughly professional bid, concept and business model. An announcement on specific future roles will be made shortly, with announcements on the individual regional franchise partnerships to follow after the due diligence process with each successful applicant.”

980 Tyres in 8 Days – Dunlop Prepared for Le Mans

A fifth of the vehicles starting at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14 are not running on rubber supplied by a certain French manufacturer – these eleven vehicles will instead have their tyres supplied by Dunlop, a company that some would be surprised to learn had driven more cars to Le Mans victory than any other make of tyre. Since 1923 Dunlop tyres have helped to deliver a total of 34 wins during the famous endurance race.

From the moment the test session began at Le Mans on June 1, Dunlop’s engineers and technicians started gathering information and making decisions on which tyres to make for the race. The recent wet weather has meant the tyre development programme was not as decisive as Dunlop had hoped, but from early on the morning of June 9 the factory began work to produce an extra 980 of the best performing tyres, in addition to the 3000 already built for Dunlop’s eleven teams. The turnaround for these tyres, including different compounds and for both wet and dry conditions, was just eight days before the trucks left Fort Dunlop in Birmingham for the journey to Le Mans. The company’s 14 tyre fitters left with the trucks and were joined by the rest of the team over the following two days.

Kumho, BFGoodrich Joint Winners of 4×4 Magazine Ultimate Tyre Test

The Kumho Road Venture MT KL71 and BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A have been named joint winners of 4×4 Magazine’s ‘ultimate tyre test’. In conducting the test, in which 4×4 Magazine aimed to discover the UK’s best mud terrain tyre, the tyres were reportedly subjected to the key obstacles and conditions encountered throughout the country. Size 235/85 R16 tyres from eight manufacturers were in turn fitted to a 2007 Land Rover Defender 110 and subjected to six challenging real world tests – mud climb, bog run, side slope, rock crawl, gravel and tarmac braking – at a venue in South Wales.

The Kumho and BFGoodrich products finished the test eight points ahead of their nearest rivals, the Goodyear Wrangler M/T and Maxxis Mudder Buckshot. The magazine found the Kumho KL71 radically different in appearance from all its competitors and, in fact, to be the best looking as well as the joint best performer. The Kumho was awarded top marks on the rock crawl and gravel braking tests and performed with credit on the mud climb and bog run. The BFGoodrich tyre, said 4×4 Magazine, is an item considered by some to be the original and best mud terrain tyre. “Slippery mud and dangerous grass were its key strengths, with both obstacles proving no problem for the traditional American,” reported the magazine.

Explosion at Goodyear Chemical Plant

The Goodyear Chemical plant in Houston, Texas, was evacuated after a heat exchanger exploded. One person was reportedly killed and six injured in the blast, which took place at 7:30 on Wednesday 11 June, after inhaling ammonia, which was being used as refrigerant to cool the exploded heat exchanger. However, company officials report that the rest of the roughly 250 employees were back on-site by 11:00. The Goodyear Chemical plant in Southeast Houston, Texas makes synthetic rubber and the blast occurred in a heat exchanger, an official said. A Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company spokesman said that an investigation into the cause of the explosion has already begun.

Goodyear Makes Additional Commercial Increases

Goodyear confirmed that it is increasing the prices of some of its Steelmark and Remington commercial truck tyres by up to 10 per cent, effective July 1. Recently, Goodyear announced an increase of up to 9 per cent on its Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly commercial brands in North America. (Tire Review/Akron)

Wolverhampton’s Iconic Goodyear Chimney Set to Tumble

The days of an iconic Wolverhampton landmark are drawing to a close. Preparation work has already begun for the demolition of the Goodyear chimney that for decades towered over a once bustling tyre manufacturing plant, and by late June or early July the imposing 150 foot high blue and yellow brick structure will exist only as a memory.

At its peak the Goodyear facility in Wolverhampton employed 7,000 people, but today this number has shrunk to 450, the remaining workers engaged in the production of retreads and compounds for use in other European Goodyear factories. The bulk of the factory site will be redeveloped into a residential area with 700 houses, shops, a park and a school. The first houses will be built in 2010.

Titan to Implement OEM Price Increase

Titan Tire Corporation has announced plans to implement a price increase for tyres and assemblies supplied to original equipment manufacturers, effective July 1, 2008. The increase will range from 7 per cent to 37 per cent, depending on the tyre, to offset rising costs for natural rubber, bead wire and oil-based material such as synthetic rubber and carbon black. Overall synthetic rubber shortages have also contributed to rising raw material costs, reports Titan.

These OE price increases follow those implemented for the aftermarket, which took effect June 1. Prices for aftermarket Titan, Goodyear and General branded OTR, farm and construction tyres increase between 4 per cent and 34 per cent.
