Titan Tire, the US subsidiary of Titan International, has announced that it will increase its aftermarket prices for its Titan and Goodyear branded farm and construction tyres from 1 April. On the back of raw materials, energy and transportation costs tyre prices will increase by up to 8 per cent, though Titan also stated that “certain tyres’ prices may rise in excess of 8 per cent due to realignment and positioning of the product.” The rise will affect tyres shipped on or after the date of the increase.
Analysts at JP Morgan have increased their estimates for Goodyear Tire & Rubber's 2012 earning per share (EPS) and reduced 2011’s figure – mainly due to the impact of raw material prices. To reflect the impact of higher natural rubber prices, JP Morgan lowered its 2011 earnings per share projection to $0.50. However, 2012 has been revised up to $2.25. The estimates assume global volume growth of 4 per cent in 2011 and 2012 and a $374 million negative price/mix against raw material costs spread out in 2011.
Two Hankook Tire America Corp. executives have opted to leave the company. Bill Bainbridge, director of brand communications, has decided to retire effective February 25. He joined Hankook in 2003 after stints with Toyo Tire USA, where he served as marketing director from 1996 to 1999 and as a regional sales manager from 2001-03. Prior to that, he held positions with SEMA, where he was vice president of marketing from 1999 to 2001; and BFGoodrich Tire. in a variety of in-store and field positions.
Goodyear has launched its follow-up to the popular Eagle F1 Asymmetric tyre at a brand event in Seville, Spain. The UHP tyre was three years in the making; a response to development requirements set by the company to improve braking in dry and wet conditions, reflecting the company’s safety-conscious branding. Goodyear has introduced its “ActiveBraking Tecnology” in this tyre, a tapered edge tread block design that “develops more surface area” under braking load, helping the “high surface silica tread compound” to work over a larger contact area – around 30 per cent more than before – to bring vehicles to a standstill in less time.
Hankook Tire has signed a contract with Ford to supply its premium Optimo H426 tyres for the 2011 Ford Explorer, which has been named the North American truck of the year. “Hankook Tire will come closer to customers in North America with its contract for the most popular SUV in North America, the Ford Explorer,” the company stated in a press release. WIthin its full year 2010 results report, released February 10, Goodyear Tire & Rubber discloses plans to close its tyre making facility in Union City, Tennessee by the end of this year. A stated reason for proceeding with closure plans is the desire to “reduce high-cost manufacturing capacity globally” as per Goodyear strategy. The Union City plant currently employs approximately 1,900 people.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it will report fourth quarter 2010 financial results before markets open on Thursday, 10 February, to be followed by an investor conference call at 10:30. Participating will be Richard J Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer, and Darren R Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer. The company will post its financial information around 45 minutes before the start of the call on its investor relations website. Goodyear Dunlop’s James Bailey is joining a new Brussels based team headed up by the company’s EMEA communications director Tom Delforge after accepting a promotion to the newly-formed role of director, brand PR for the company’s Europe, the Middle East and Africa region. In his new position, Bailey will promote the Goodyear and Dunlop brands throughout the various EMEA markets; his brand-focused position complements that of fellow team member Jens Völmicke, previously brand and product PR manager at Goodyear Dunlop Europe. In the new role of EMEA region Corporate Communications director Völmicke will be involved with communications involving Goodyear Dunlop as a company, covering a range of subject areas including corporate responsibility and sustainability.
Thomas Philip Buckley, founder and owner of Industrial Tires Ltd (ITL) in Mississauga, Canda, died on 14 January. "It was with sad hearts that we learned of Tom's passing," said John Ryder, a vice president with prominent materials handling equipment dealership JH Ryder Machinery Ltd in Mississauga. "Our relationship with Tom and the ITL organisation spanned four decades. His unique blend of a colourful personality, visionary leadership and intuitive business savvy will leave a significant legacy in the materials handling industry."

Hertfordshire’s Soopa Toobs says it has continued to develop and expand its range of quality inner tubes to suit the increasing variety of radial and low-profile agricultural and implement tyres on the market, particularly with many farmers, estate managers and groundsmen using utility vehicles and ATVs to get around, increasing vehicle inventory. Company representative Martin Mansfield says demands continue to change while the increased longevity of machinery used means that there is an opportunity for suppliers able to provide a wide range of sizes and applications.
Goodyear has let it be known that both the ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Truck of the Year’ at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit are fitted with its tyres as original equipment. The two distinctions were awarded to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and 2011 Ford Explorer respectively; Goodyear is exclusive tyre supplier for the Volt and its Assurance Fuel Max is fitted in size P215/55R17. Goodyear’s Fortera HL tyre is standard fitment on the Explorer in size P245/65R17.
It may not be the sunny season in Europe right now yet solar energy still has a role to play in our region. Goodyear Dunlop has shown its confidence in the technology through investing in an 87,000 square metre solar facility at its Philippsburg plant in southern Germany. The set-up installed on the roof of the tyre warehouse at Philippsburg by regenerative energy specialists PV julist and juwi is said to be the third largest rooftop solar power plant in the world and is expected to provide an output of 7.4 MW and 7.3 million kWh per annum, equivalent to the annual requirements of approximately 1,800 households.
Suckling Transport has renewed a contract to fit Michelin tyres across its fleet following an 11 per cent reduction in tyre-related breakdowns since it began fitting Michelin tyres in 2008. The independent petroleum haulage contractor, which runs a fleet of 62 tractor units and 74 trailers from its base in West Thurrock, Essex, has also seen its regroove rate rise from zero to 53 per cent. It predicts an annual saving of £20,000 as a result of the contract renewal.
