UK vehicle industry boosted by £500 million BMW investment

Britain’s vehicle manufacturing industry has received welcome news from BMW, whose plan to invest £500 million in its Mini assembly plant in Oxford plus in its Swindon and Birmingham sites will safeguard some 5,000 UK jobs. The German manufacturer announced this investment during a Downing Street meeting between leading vehicle manufacturers and the Prime Minister. During the meeting, Mr. Cameron told industry representatives that “we really want to see the automotive industry flourish and we are determined to do the things to help it succeed.”

Cereals Show first outing for Goodyear Optitrac H+

Earlier in the year Goodyear introduced its Optitrac H+ harvester tyre into the UK; those wishing to see this new product for themselves can do so at the Cereals show in Lincolnshire, where it will be displayed for the first time on June 15 and 16. The Optitrac H+ is currently available in three sizes in the UK (IF 800/75R32 CFO, IF 800/70R32 CFO and IF 900/60R32 CFO); the tyres were designed in line with a four-year 2009 ETRTO experimental standard which allows a load bonus of up to 55 per cent for cyclic field operations without the need to increase the inflation pressure.

Goodyear declares force majeure on SBR

Towards the end of May, US manufacturer Goodyear released a statement reporting it had declared force majeure on styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and other butadiene (BD) derivatives because its supplier is short of these substances. “While we are working diligently to identify and obtain alternative sources of butadiene monomer supply, at this time we do not know how long the situation will last,” the statement read.

Kumho’s new Le Sport “designed for Europe’s top marques”

The first 25 sizes of Kumho’s replacement for the KU19 and proven KU31 have been launched on the UK market. The Ecsta Le Sport KU39, to give it its full title, is an asymmetric ultra high performance tyre designed with Europe’s top car marques in mind, and was developed using the twin methods of the latest KADAS prediction tools and on Europe’s most demanding test tracks. The Y-speed rated product’s key selling points are its enhanced performance, braking in wet conditions and controlled ride and refinement, according to the Korean manufacturer. Its high grip tread compound delivers improved traction and braking performance, while its specially designed casing provides impressive high speed stability.

Goodyear declares preferred stock dividend

Directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company today declared a quarterly dividend of 74.25 cents per share of mandatory convertible preferred stock. The dividend is payable 1 July, 2011, to shareholders of record on June 15, 2011. The payout represents an annual rate of $2.9375 per share.

Goodyear Redeems $350 Million in Senior Notes

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it has completed its previously announced redemption of $350 million in senior notes due 2016. A statement from the company continues: “Following its successful mandatory convertible preferred stock offering in March, Goodyear exercised its right to redeem $350 million in aggregate principal amount of its outstanding 10.500% senior notes due 2016. The redemption price was 110.5 per cent of the principal amount of the notes redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest to, but excluding, May 27, 2011. The redemption will result in savings to annualized interest expense of approximately $40 million, of which about $23 million will be realized in 2011.”

Goodyear Dunlop orders Transense equipment for FOS

Transense has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Translogik Limited recently took a further order for “a number” of Truck Tyre Inspection Kits from Goodyear Dunlop for its FOS (Fleet Online Solution) Mobile programme. This relationship began 18 months ago when Goodyear Dunlop began integrating the Translogik tyre inspection probe to work with its FOS system.

Mini supply first BMW OEM for Hankook

As of late June, Hankook will begin delivering its tyres as original equipment on the Mini. The BMW owned manufacturer will be supplied with the Ventus Prime from the tyre maker’s plants in South Korea under what Hankook calls a “prestigious cooperation;” the company further notes that with this BMW deal it is now successfully competing against tyre makers such as Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and Continental.

Goodyear blimps spread tornado relief message

Goodyear’s three North American blimps are currently assisting the US Department of Homeland Security/FEMA in its efforts to collect donations to aid those devastated by recent tornados in the United States. The airships, Spirit of Goodyear in Ohio, Spirit of Innovation in Florida and Spirit of America in California, are using their electronic signs to display disaster relief messages directing people to donate by text via The Salvation Army or The American Red Cross. A third message provides details of the nvoad.org disaster relief website.

Titan Sales and Marketing VP resigns

Titan International has announced the resignation of its vice-president of Sales and Marketing, Jeff Vasichek, effective May 31. Vasichek joined Titan in 2005 when the company purchased Goodyear’s North American agricultural tyre business. Commenting on Vasichek’s departure, Titan International chairman and CEO Maurice Taylor said “Jeff has been with Titan as we have grown in business, and everyone at Titan wishes Jeff all the best in his next venture. He will be a great asset for his next employer.”

DuPont acquisition of Danisco finalised

DuPont’s acquisition of Danisco has been finalised. On May 16 the chemical company reported that its wholly-owned subsidiary DuPont Denmark Holding ApS had taken on 92.2 per cent of Danisco’s outstanding shares, having paid 700 krone (£82) per share. Following the acquisition’s finalisation DuPont CEO and chair Ellen Kullman said “we are delighted that the tender has been successful and we can move on to the process of integrating Danisco into DuPont.” Danisco chairman Jorgen Tandrup added the Danish company is “very pleased that a vast majority of Danisco shareholders have accepted DuPont's offer” and commented on the two companies’ shared outlook on science and research capabilities.

Fritz appointed Goodyear investor relations VP

Goodyear Tire & Rubber has announced the appointment of Gregory A. Fritz to the position of vice president, investor relations. In his new role, Fritz, who prior to joining the tyre maker was assistant treasurer and senior director, investor relations for Whirlpool Corporation, will report to Darren R. Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

1000th member joins Goodyear AGRI club

Some two years after Goodyear established its AGRI club to encourage the sharing of best practice and industry news throughout the UK's farming community, the tyre maker has welcomed the new 1000th member. This millennial number is Kaye Davies, who works 700 acres of mixed farmland including potato, wheat, barley and OSR crops plus cattle, sheep and pigs. She operates with 11 tractors. Davies signed up at an event at Farm Tyre Specialist dealer Llandovery Tyres in Dyfed.

Goodyear Dunlop names new German plant managers

A new plant manager has taken charge of Goodyear Dunlop’s factory in Philippsburg, Germany. As of May 1, Klaus Happ has taken over the role from Bruno Kihm, who is now plant manager of the company’s Riesa passenger car tyre factory in the country’s east. Kihm in turn has replaced Dr. Christian Paech, who retired on May 1 after a career with the tyre maker spanning 33 years.
