CEOs and experts from China’s leading companies gathered in Shanghai and Beijing to explore how smart manufacturing will deliver value to the manufacturing industry and support government initiatives including China Manufacturing 2025. Hosted by Rockwell Automation “The Connected Enterprise CEO Forum” was led by Rockwell Automation’s new president and CEO, Blake Moret. However the interesting point from a tyre industry perspective is that the firm revealed that it is helping any unnamed Chinese tyremaker construct a factory in the US.
Giti Tire is currently partnering with performance car magazine Evo for a series of track days. The manufacturer states that this “provides an excellent platform” from which to promote its current flagship ultra-high performance product, the GT Radial SportActive. Five events are held at Bedford Autodrome every year. With three track days completed and two more in the diary, including the popular How Fast? on 22 October with F1-style qualifying timed laps and leaderboard, the partnership is revving up.

Launched at Reifen 2016, Giti Tire’s objectives for its new winter van tyre, the GT Radial Maxmiler WT2, included improvements in wet performances and safety within commercial operations, UK managing director Brian McDermott told Tyres & Accessories. At the same time, the manufacturer wanted to maintain good winter performances proven in press tests, and its high mileage in comparison with competitors. “The tyre achieved all the above targets,” he said.
Nottingham City Transport has shortlisted the GT Radial GAU861 as an all-position tyre of choice. The operator had been contracted to a premium manufacturer until April 2014, but took purchasing in-house to access the open market.
Richard Lyons has become Trelleborg wheel system’s industrial and construction general manager for the North Europe region. The latest move follows Lyons’ appointment as managing director of Trelleborg Wheel Systems UK operations and its Interfit fitting and fleet service business, which took place back in April 2016.
Giti Tire launched its new tyre for the van markets, the GT Radial Maxmiler WT2, at Reifen 2016. The Maxmiler WT2 will be available from autumn 2016 in 20 SKUs in sizes between 14” and 16”, speed indices from Q-T, and load indices of 88/86 to 121/120. The tyre has achieved B-grade wet grip across the entire portfolio, and grades between C and E in rolling resistance. ECE 117-2 compliant, testing at Ivalo showed improved performance across wet and dry braking and handling against the existing product, the Maxmiler WT and two other leading manufacturer brands.
Giti has launched a new strategic initiative for its commercial tyre business at Reifen 2016, which will see the manufacturer replace its GT Radial branded truck and bus products in Europe by the end of 2017. The manufacturer’s European representatives told Tyrepress that a mixture of new products – led by the Giti GDR655 regional drive axle and Giti GAM851 mixed-service steer and trailer tyres, both of which have been launched at Reifen – and relabeled existing products would make up the Giti CV tyre range, commencing immediately. The GT Assist network would be moved to Giti branding “at the appropriate time”, UK managing director Brian McDermott told Tyrepress. Meanwhile Giti will continue to market new GT Radial passenger car tyres with the “A Product of Giti” badge on the sidewall, first seen on the UHP flagship GT Radial SportActive tyre, representatives told Tyrepress. There are currently “no plans to replace the GT Radial brand” in consumer focused products, they added.

In response to a recent, less than favourable third party tyre test, Giti Tire has run two sets of independent tests with Dekra and “a leading German tyre testing association” to verify the wet braking performance of its GT Radial Champiro FE1 tyre. In the case of the original test, the Nexen Nblue HD Plus was chosen as the comparison product based on the reported results, which had this tyre as the test winner. Therefore Giti ran its tests using the same Nexen product as a comparison.

Along with Nokian’s admission and apology for “mistakes” in its practices concerning tyre tests, the Finnish tyre manufacturer stated that “several operators in the field… have been suspected or evidence has been presented against them of differences between tyres in magazine tests and tyres that are for sale in stores.” After the Nokian statement’s implication of other tyre manufacturers in malpractice regarding independent tyre testing, Michelin immediately responded by stating categorically that it has “never designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations.” Tyres & Accessories approached 11 more of the world’s leading manufacturers, many of whose products regularly appear in magazine tests, for their response to the question: Have you ever designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations? Listed below are their responses.
