Lanxess Celebrates World Rubber Day

On September 12 the specialty chemical supplier Lanxess AG celebrated the 100th anniversary of synthetic rubber. The patent for the substance that would later significantly benefit the tyre world was granted exactly a century earlier to German chemist Fritz Hofmann, an employee to Lanxess predecessor company Elberfelder Farbenfabriken. To mark the occasion, Lanxess held a scientific colloquium in Cologne, Germany. More than 400 guests from 18 nations attended the event in order to learn more on the latest innovations in the field, the substance’s future possibilities and its market potential.

Bridgestone unveils Ecopia EP150

Bridgestone has released the latest product in its Ecopia range of environmentally friendlier tyres. The Ecopia EP150 was released at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, and the manufacturer notes the new tyre meets the “challenging and previously contradictory objective” of combining safety in wet conditions with reduced rolling resistance.

RUD-Erlau Gains Stream of New Orders

Fresh from an order to fit several sets of tyre protection chains for load-out duties at an Iraqi cement plant, RUD-Erlau, reports that service is the key to gaining new orders in straitened times. With its customers in mind, RUD-Erlau recently has invested 10 million euros in extending and up-grading the facilities at their plants in Germany, Romania and Brazil.

European online passenger car and motorcycle tyre provider, Pneus Online has launched the fourth version of its website (www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk). The company has sold tyres on the internet since 2001 and have used this experience to develop a new optimised platform so that each customer is able to order the desired tyre in a few clicks.

NDI UK: A New Competitive Option for Truck Tyres

Since the beginning of 2009, West Midlands based NDI UK has been evolving from a small regional tyre wholesaler/distributor into a nationwide tyre wholesaling option. According to the company, this progression can be directly attributed to the fact that it is part of one of Europe’s most competitive tyre distribution groups – Nordisk Daek Import A-S in Denmark. Ian Smith, managing director of NDI UK commented: “Up to the end of 2008, the company had been well known throughout the West Midlands but now we intend to work more closely with NDI Denmark in order to gradually become a respected wholesaler specialising in all market sectors from a small implement tyre right through to large earthmover patterns serving the entire UK market. Hankook Tire Invests 230 million euros in Hungary Factory

Hankook Tire is to invest 230 million euros in its Hungary tyre production plant over the next 2 years in a bid to double production output from 5 to 10 million tyres a year by 2011. The latest injection of funds means the company has invested 550 million euros in the project. An official statement from the company said the latest move to ramp up production in Europe was a reflection of increasing demand there. Hankook’s decision to build a manufacturing facility in Hungary has been key to reducing customer delivery times from one month previously to just five days for the Europe-made Hankook tyres. However, the move also positions Hankook for increasing amounts of OE business, with the company openly bidding for the attention of “Audi-level” customers. Last year the company’s Hungary site began supplying OE customers in Europe, first Hyundai’s Czech factory (with tyres destined for the i30-compact car) then to Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge in Germany for the popular VW T5.

UK Withstanding Truck Tyre/Retreading Downturn Well

Following a decade of steady growth in demand averaging 10 per cent, last October the financial and economic crisis pushed European retreading markets into a freefall. The largest decline was listed by market participants in the opening quarter of this year, and according to Marangoni demand for retreaded tyres in Europe reduced by a quarter. Yet at the same time, the market for new truck tyres dropped some 30 per cent. In the second quarter, demand was still some 15 per cent below that of the previous year, while the new tyre industry recorded sales a clear 25 per cent worse – another result reflecting the new tyre industry’s greater difficulties.

German Scrappage Scheme Ends

Market analysts are predicting that the German market scrappage scheme is likely to have come to end today as demand for cars purchased under the scheme now exceeds supply. According to a Deutsche bank report published today the scheme has been responsible for 9000 unit sales a day since its introduction and – as of today – only 5000 applications remain.

Conti Driving Towards a Brighter Future with LEDs

Continental foresees an end to the days when cars with only one working headlight trawl our roads and motorways at night: The company is looking towards a brighter future in which light emitting diodes (LED) will be utilised in headlight systems that last the entire life of a car. And since LEDs also use less energy than conventional headlight bulbs, both the operating and maintenance costs of such a system will be lower.

Schaeffler Debt Deal – Paving the Way for a Merger

The Schaeffler Group has moved one step closer towards a merger with Continental AG after reaching an agreement with banks to refinance 12 billion euros in debt. According to a Schaeffler statement, the ball bearing manufacturer’s credit lines have been split into two portions of 4 1/2-year and six-year maturities and will be implemented in several stages. Refinancing deals were arranged with UBS, Royal Bank of Scotland, Unicredit SpA’s HVB Group unit, Commerzbank AG and Landesbank Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Is Your Cat Approved?

On 13th August 2009, Motor Vehicles Regulations came into effect, making it illegal to fit a non type-approved catalytic converter to a vehicle registered on or after 1st March 2001. This means that a "Y" registered or newer vehicle requires a type-approved "cat". The new law also requires that replacement Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are also type approved. Continental to Manufacture "Softy" Tyres in Sri Lanka

In early August Continental’s tyre operations in Germany, Continental Reifen Deutschland GmbH, entered into a strategic alliance with another German manufacturer of super elastic tyres, Gumasol-Werke Dr. Mayer GmbH. As part of the deal, in future Gumasol’s "Softy" range of products will be manufactured in Continental’s factory in Sri Lanka, where Conti already produces super elastic tyres for the Asian and American markets.

A New Day for Tyre Recycling in Kazakhstan

A new facility owned by the Kazakhstan Rubber Recycling company has become the Central Asian country’s first end of life tyre recycling plant to enter operation. The facility, located in the capital city of Astana, is equipped with machinery built by Germany’s MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau and holds a capacity of around 11,000 car and truck tyres per annum.

Proportion of ESP Equipped Vehicles Grows ‘Significantly’ in Europe

Bosch reports the 81 per cent of passenger cars newly registered during 2008 in its home market of Germany are now equipped with its ESP electronic stability programme, two per cent more than last year. Europe-wide, 55 per cent of newly registered passenger cars were so equipped in 2008, five per cent more than in 2007. This figure is set to keep on growing as the enforcement date for EU legislation draws nearer – the EU requires all new vehicle models from November 2011 to be fitted with the safety system, while all newly registered vehicles must have ESP from November 2014. Similar legislation has also been passed in the US and Australia.

Ruia Group Toys with European Acquisitions

The lights may still be out and the machinery standing idle at Dunlop India’s Sahaganj factory, but this isn’t stopping parent company the Ruia Group from eyeing up new acquisitions further afield. The Indian conglomerate is reportedly in “an advanced stage of talks” regarding the purchase of a European sealing systems company.
