Another tyre test from Germany, this time an evaluation of SUV tyres by 4×4 magazine Off Road. The publication selected nine brands of size 255/55 R18 tyres and, using a Mercedes-Benz ML 250 as test vehicle, subjected them to the usual challenges. Nokian’s zLine SUV took the coveted first place on the winners’ podium ahead of the Continental SportContact 5 SUV and Dunlop SP QuatrroMaxx.
The Autobild family of publications includes titles for various specific automotive niches. Auto Bild Allrad caters to the 4×4/SUV segment, and its most recent issue included a test of 11 size 215/65 R16 tyres. A Volkswagen Tiguan served as test vehicle.

According to Forbes, the 80 per cent owner in Continental majority shareholder the Schaeffler Group possesses assets worth US$26.9 billion, which secures him 21st place in the publication’s global rich list and first in Germany. His top spot in the national table sees him ahead of a trio of discount supermarket moguls – the owners of Aldi Süd (which operates Aldi in the UK), Lidl and Aldi Nord.
Auto Bild Sportscars has voted the Hankook Ventus S1 evo winner of its latest summer tyre test. The German publication evaluated seven 19-inch tyres on a BMW M4 configured for 255/35 at the front and 275/35 R19Y on the rear axle.
While Cologne is gaining a new tyre show with the 2018 launch of a new rival for Reifen, it is also losing one with the departure of Tire Technology Expo. As of next year, the annual tyre manufacturing technology exhibition and conference will take place at the Deutsche Messe site in Hanover, Germany. Tire Technology Expo, which is scheduled for 16 to 18 February 2016, will take place in two halls.
German motoring association ADAC and consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest have jointly tested 35 size 185/60 R14 H and size 205/55 R16 V tyres for their latest summer tyre test. The second-mentioned size is the country’s most-sold tyre size for mid-class cars, and the ADAC notes that four pairs of these 205/55 R16 V tyres were evaluated as part of the test. Each pair was an eco/comfort product from the same manufacturer, and placing them back to back gave an additional insight into their respective strengths and weaknesses.
In addition to its newly-signed deal with Champions League and German Bundesliga team FC Schalke 04, Kumho Tyre has come on board as tyre partner for two further German clubs. Hamburger SV and Hertha BSC will be sponsored by the tyre maker until the end of the 2016/17 season.

Following his appointment as Giti international director – marketing and sales, Tyres & Accessories recently caught up with Richard Lyons at the company’s UK headquarters in Cheshire and asked what’s behind the promotion. Answering, Lyons explained by putting the announcement in the context of “continual development” at Giti. In this respect Lyons’ words fit into what the company’s top management are saying on the subject.
Stephan Giesecke has been appointed Giti Tire’s first dedicated truck and bus marketing manager for the GT Radial brand in the D-A-CH region. The tyre maker has employed Giesecke in this German, Austrian and Swiss market role to assist its aims of further boosting the brand’s profile and augmenting sales.
Kumho Tire Europe reports the relocation of its motorsport division from Birmingham to Germany. It gave word of the shift to Offenbach am Main, where the tyre maker’s European headquarters are situated, upon announcing the appointment of Manfred Theisen as head of Kumho’s European motorsport division. Theisen began in his new role in January 2015; prior to his appointment he held similar positions of responsibility within Dunlop and Yokohama’s motorsport departments.
Olaf Sandeck has joined Mitas’ German subsidiary and will soon take over as manager of the national sales and marketing operation. He began his tenure with the tyre maker in December 2014 and, as of March 2015, will succeed Gerhard Schulterobben, who currently leads Mitas’ German sales unit. Schulterobben will retire after 11 years with the company.
In news that will surprise virtually nobody, Continental shares that electric cars fail to stir drivers’ emotions. Ahead of the release of its ‘2015 Continental Mobility Study’ later this month, the tyre and automotive systems manufacturer has released a few pertinent details on what drivers think of electric cars – and it isn’t very flattering.
During last November’s Michelin Challenge Bibendum event, the tyre maker announced its intention to begin production of ‘Selfseal’ tyres, which contain a polymer that immediately closes holes in the event of a puncture, during the course of this year. It appears these products will be manufactured at Michelin’s Bad Kreuznach factory in Germany; during an event at the site, plant manager Cyrille Beau confirmed the plant’s selection as a Selfseal production site.
The German town of Bad Kreuznach reports Michelin’s acquisition of a 70,000 square metre land plot alongside its facility there, an area that will be used to expand the plant. The land is part of the ‘Marshall Kaserne’ site, a former US Army barracks in the Rhineland-Palatinate that closed in 2001.
