Romanian Graduates More Motivated than German Counterparts

Romanian university graduates are self-motivated and optimistic about the future, a survey commissioned by Continental AG has found. Although strongly attached to their home country, they are basically willing to relocate, with a career preference for Western countries and, above all, the United States. On the other hand, they would flatly reject a job offer in neighbouring East European countries like Russia or Ukraine, regardless of how attractive the position might be. Equally unpopular are offers from China or Brazil.

In general students feel they have received a good education although they are said to “greatly regret not having received much practical experience.” Continental is one of the largest investors in Romania and runs plants in Timisoara, Sibiu and Satu Mare.

Wholesale Changes at Stapletons

For the last 18 months Stapletons has kept pretty quiet about its plans for the UK market and consequently rumours have abounded about the strength of the company’s position. Now, chief executive officer, Kenji Murai has broken silence, announcing efficiency cuts and $25 million of investment designed to set “Stapletons apart from its competitors…into 2006 and beyond.”

On the 11 October Stapletons announced that it plans to close its Dereham tyre distribution centre (TDC), cut around 50 jobs and introduce new stock distribution methods at its Bristol, Coatbridge and Warrington TDCs. Delving deeper, Tyres & Accessories learnt that the cutbacks are the first step in programme that will see the company’s Japanese backers invest a minimum of $25 million over the next three to five years.

Titan Gets Buyout Offer From Equity Group

(Akron/Tire Review) Titan International Inc says it has received a “cash merger offer” from a private equity group. The $18 per share offer was made, according to Titan, by One Equity Partners LLC, which is affiliated with JP Morgan Chase & Co. Based on the number of outstanding Titan shares available, the deal is likely worth about $350 million.

Fulda Challenge 2006

The 2006 UK Fulda Challenge team has been chosen following the European Selection Event that took place in Sulden, South Tyrol/Italy.

The two-person team – Martin Yardley, a Royal Marine physical training instructor from Portsmouth and Kate Balchin, a Metropolitan police officer from Bagshot in Surrey – will represent the UK in the sixth Fulda Challenge.

Hofmann Granted ATL Approval

Hofmann has received full GEA Automated Test Lane approval. Richard Dixon from VOSA and Dave Garratt, chief executive of the GEA, over saw the testing which was completed at UK Equipment’s headquarters in Reading.

Tenneco Launches Monotube Shock Absorber

Tenneco Automotive has launched a new monotube shock absorber which features a Monotube Blow Off (MTBO) valve at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany (IAA) last week. The new Ford Focus ST, which will be introduced in Europe later this year, will include shocks featuring the new MTBO valve.

De Vries: “Navitrac is Coming to Europe“

Interstate Europe’s product portfolio will soon feature two new tyre brands. As commercial director Theo de Vries explains during an interview with Tyres & Accessories, the wholesaler is entering the truck tyre business with a new brand called “Navitrac.” Furthermore, Interstate Europe is hoping to make an impact on Europe’s exclusive brand market with the launch of the “Sceptor” passenger car tyre line. However, exactly when these two brands will be available in the UK and on the European market is not clear. The names of the exclusive distributors that will take on the new tyres in each of Europe’s national markets are similarly undefined.

Continental Expects Tyres Sales to Help Profitability

Continental expects its profitability will be assisted by improvements at its truck tyre business and demand for electronic car parts. , Furthermore, the automotive part supplier, the third-best performer on Germany’s DAX share index this year, expects to improve earnings and is said to be considering its options in emerging markets like India and China.

Inventor Puts Tiger in the Tank, Literally

Want a novel way of beating sky-high pump prices and fuel strikes? A German inventor claims he has developed a way to make cheap diesel fuel out of dead cats. Dr Christian Koch, 55, from Kleinhartmannsdorf, said his method uses old tyres, weeds and animal corpses.

The ingredients are heated up to 300 Celsius to filter out hydrocarbons which are then turned into diesel by, and this is no joke, using a catalytic converter. Dr Koch told online new sources the resulting “high quality bio-diesel” costs just 15 pence per litre. The cadaver of a fully-grown cat can produce as much as 2.5 litres of fuel – meaning around 20 cats are needed for a full tank, he explained.

“I tank my car with my own diesel mixture and have driven it for 105,000 miles without any problems,” Dr Koch told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

Getting a Grip on the Net

When it comes to online tyre sales, Delticom claims the position of European market leader, with 47 business to consumer (B2C) online shops in 21 countries. Alongside its core tyre business, Delticom is expanding its range of car products to include spare parts, roof racks, garages, motor oil and batteries for both private and business customers.

Delticom’s recent financial results reflect the company’s confidence. In the first-half of 2005 Delticom increased turnover to 56 million euros, compared wit 34 million euros in the same period the previous year. This 65 per cent increase means the company expects its full-year sales to total some 110 million euros.

Deldo ‘Optimistic’ About Coming Winter Season

Having recently released its latest winter catalogue, Belgium-based wholesaler, Deldo, is claiming that it is a leading player in the tyre market. “Our winter catalogue is once again the benchmark,” with strong prices on a broad range of premium brands, said a company spokesperson. Copies of the new catalogue have already been shipped to Germany and Austria with other countries set to follow shortly.

According to company spokesman, Tom Van Dyck, Deldo can “clearly feel the trend of the current markets – many have realised that ordering with the industry is no guarantee for success.” Each year too many important sizes fail to arrive, he observed adding: “Furthermore, traders can find any brand within our stock. It is no longer necessary to maintain expensive business relationships and buy large minimum quantities, just to get the goods you need. With only one contact, you can get your hands on any brand you want.”

Beru TSS Claims Fuel Savings

Beru AG claims its technology is good for drivers’ wallets in addition to ensuring increasing levels of safety. According to the pressure monitoring equipment manufacturer, experts have calculated that roughly a third of all drivers are on the road with 0.2 to 0.7 bar negative pressure. And this means that they are also paying more than they should in fuel consumption. For example, if the tyres have 0.6 bar too little pressure, the fuel consumption rises by around four per cent.

Nankang Winter Sales Grow 10-Fold

Nankang’s European winter tyre sales have grown to 10 times the size they were in 2003, the Taiwanese company has reported. According to company representatives, Nankang expects to move some 400,000 units of winter tyres, across Europe, this season. This is something, the company, which was reportedly the first Taiwanese company to produce snow tyres, is understandably proud of. The historically high target is set against previous records of 80,000 tyres in 2004 and 40,000 units in 2003.

Conti Clocks Up Fan Miles

Newcastle United’s Toon Army and Sunderland’s Mackems have been named as the nation’s most committed football fans for miles covered per season, in a survey conducted by Continental.

The Toon Army claim number one spot, travelling 22.8 million miles, according to the results of Conti’s study of 92 English and Welsh clubs.
