CES details its “Total TPMS Solution”

Aftermarket exhaust specialists CES (UK) announced its decision to diversify its business with the addition of TPMS products and services to its fast fit offer in January. The first step was to become an official Schrader TPMS distributor. Now the company is explaining more about the thinking behind this move, predicting that tyre specialists and independent garages can expect to see a lot more cars with Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) entering their workshops in the months and years to come. To help the aftermarket gain its share in this new market, the company has recently launched what it calls a “total TPMS solution.” This encompasses the parts; equipment and technical support that CES believes technicians will need to successfully service TPMS.

'Trust My Garage' scheme launched by IGA

The RMI's Independent Garage Association (IGA) has launched the Trust My Garage scheme, a consumer reassurance scheme for independent garages.

Stuart James, IGA Director, commented: "The Trust My Garage scheme offers consumers who use Independent garages financial reassurance in the event of a dispute or if the garage goes out of business. This reassurance is backed by the IGA.

IGA "disappointed" at MOT decision

"The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is disappointed at the Department for Transport’s (DfT) decision not to raise the standard MOT fee this year" said Stuart James, IGA director. The DfT have decided that during 2012 the set price for an MOT will remain at £54.85.

James continued: The majority of MOT test stations are small to medium sized businesses that are currently battling with increasing costs and declining revenue. The increase in cost would allow these already struggling businesses to recoup some of the revenue."

Hofmann Fusion 2 machines launch Spring Collection promo

Hofmann has added a second iteration of its popular Fusion tyre changer and wheel balancer machines to its line-up. The launch of the Monty Fusion 2 tyre changer, and the Geodyna Fusion 2 digital wheel balancer is heralded by a Spring Collection promotion, running until 31 May, which allows garages to buy both machines for £3,999 (excluding VAT). Hofmann general manager, Chris Behan says the company is “delighted to announce the launch of Fusion 2, which spearheads our Spring Collection promotion.”

2012 Motor Codes Garage of the Year voting opens

Consumer voting for the 2012 Motor Codes Garage of the Year opened today (Friday 24 February) with a four-page special published in The Sun. The award has changed slightly in 2012, with the addition of award categories reflecting large and small garages. Motor Codes has also gained support from a headline competition sponsor, Havoline.

Scottish parts distributor opens 2 branches, upgrades software

Scotland’s leading auto parts distributor, Dingbro has opened two new branches in Dumfries and Stranraer, increasing its network to 23 sites. The new branches have been placed to support garages and workshops in the south west of Scotland. "I’m delighted at the recent additions to the network. Hankook launches Europe-wide breakdown service

During January Hankook Tire Europe began rolling out its new truck breakdown service, "Hankook Road Assist 24h". Customers in three markets – Germany, France and Spain – initially benefit from the service’s launch, and Hankook says the service will be extended to fleets in other European countries in the short term. Hankook’s existing national truck breakdown services will be integrated into the new pan-European breakdown service. Fleet customers can utilise Hankook Road Assist 24h regardless of their current choice of tyre, Hankook adds.

New tyre wholesaler Rogo Tyre launches website

The Netherlands’ new internet-based tyre wholesaler, Rogo Tyre has launched its website, promising to deliver luxury, 4×4, van and motorcycle tyres “to garages, car dealers, tyre- fitters and wholesalers in the Netherlands and beyond”. The company will offer a stockholding of “more than 1.2 million tyres” from its webshop, including many world-leading brands and offering 24 or 48 hour delivery times.

A new tyre website claims to marry up the dual intentions of supporting local independent garages with ensuring consumers get the best deal possible, In essence TyreQuote.com aims to fill a perceived gap in the market that is currently dominated by dealerships that can afford to run nationalised advertising campaigns, local garages are increasingly finding themselves under threat.

MOT decision positive for motorists, says HiQ

The HiQ fast fit chain has applauded the Government’s decision to back down on plans to change MOT test frequency – a measure it said would “hit the pockets of motorists harder than ever.” HiQ says Transport Secretary Justine Greening’s statement that the Government would retain the 3-1-1 arrangement and work with the industry to focus on the standards of MOT testing stations and garages is “welcome news”, as the company aims to position itself as a category leader in self-regulation and transparency.

Government pushes ‘better service’, keeps MOT frequency

The government is aiming to lead garages to make improvements in customer service in “a package of transparency and value-for-money measures” unveiled today by transport secretary Justine Greening. According to a statement released by the department, an evaluation of existing MOT test standards and frequency took account of the views and evidence offered by a wide range of organisations.

Changing test brings diagnostics to the fore

It’s no joke. When new additions to the regulations governing MOT testing take effect on 1 April 2012 vehicles with dashboard Malfunction Indicator Lamps (MIL) lit at test time will fail their MOT. As we all understand these dashboard lights warn drivers when systems such as ESP or SRS airbags aren’t working properly, but this new rule also specifically highlights that – for the first time – their illumination will directly result in a mandatory fail (the rule comes into effect from 1 January but will be help up as an advisory only until 31 March). Warning lights or MIL that are required to be noted if illuminated include ESP; Electronic Stability Programme, SRS; Safety Restraint System, ABS; Anti-Locking Brake System, and crucially for our business TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).
