UK firm Symphony Recycling Technologies says it has released a semi-automatic tyre cutter that is small enough to be used by neighbourhood garages and can completely scrap a tyre in 60 seconds. The SymTyre-S300 is aimed at businesses wishing to flat-pack end of life tyres for easier and more cost effective storage and transportation.
The manufacturer of TerraClean – a product designed to clean internal engine components by removing harmful carbon deposits without the need to dismantle the engine – is to hold its first conference for its growing network of service centres. Randstad says its new television advertising campaign, to be aired across a number of digital and satellite TV channels, will be previewed at the conference. TerraClean claims to increase the miles per gallon of vehicles by between four and 15 per cent, reduce emissions, extend component life and improve petrol and diesel vehicle performance. The product has won an endorsement from TV motoring specialist and star of The Discovery Channel’s ‘Wheeler Dealers’, Edd China.
Aftermarket show Autopromotec has announced details of 2013’s International Automotive Aftermarket Meeting (IAAM13) on 23 May 2013. Previously known as the EAAS (European Automotive Aftermarket Symposium), the conference aims to provide companies and professionals involved in the after-sales sector with an insider's perspective on the trends and developments within the aftermarket industry in Europe, as well as further afield. It will focus on new international channels for sales and marketing activities, both within Europe and selected strategic countries, such as those of the BRIC group (Brazil, Russia, India and China).
Snap-on Diagnostics has introduced the new Snap-on Verus Pro hand-held diagnostic tool for workshop technicians. The company says the latest addition to its hand-held diagnostic range offers a complete solution for UK garages and bodyshops. The Verus Pro is fast, powerful and portable, providing access to required information sources, scanner, components test metre, scope readings and car-fix information. Snap-on Diagnostics says the range-topping device has been designed to allow the technician to manage the complete job from start to finish.
"Up to one thousand independent forecourt sites will be wiped out by new supermarket forecourts by 2017 unless the Government takes action" said Brian Madderson Petrol Retailers' Association (PRA) Chairman.
The PRA report commissioned from Christie & Co looked at the planning applications for new petrol filling stations between 2009 and the third quarter of 2012. It found that an average of 40 supermarket forecourts were being granted permission each year, and Steve Rodell, director and head of Retail at Christie & Co said: "If applications continue at the same rate, and there is no reason to believe that will not be the case, there will be another 160 supermarket sites by the end of 2016.
The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has responded to a recent Motorist Forum report on customer experience of franchised and independent MoT stations and garages in the wake of the government’s statement on the matter. While Brian Spratt, IAAF chief executive, praised the Roads minister for taking a “balanced view”, he said a fundamental change of attitudes towards communication is the key to improving the garage customer service experience. The Motorists Forum report put forward 12 recommendations to the government on how to improve the garage customer experience, details of which can be found on the IAAF website.
Foxy Lady Drivers Club has opened what it says is the UK's first female friendly accident repairer network. According to the network, Women drivers can now search for a female friendly business across much of the UK for when they need their car servicing, MOT'd or repaired including all kinds of mechanical work as well as major accident damage and more minor bodywork repairs like car park dents or damaged alloys. The new Foxy Lady Approved accident repair network opened for business on Monday 7 January with an initial 90 accident repair centres featured.

They’re also a talking point in Bahrain, but the island nation’s issues with used tyres differ somewhat from ours. The Gulf Daily News reported on 5 December that storage centres are being set up across Bahrain; the purpose of these is to house used tyres in order, as the newspaper writes, to “stop saboteurs from burning them on the street and to protect the environment from fumes and smoke.”

Terry Gibson has been appointed as the Independent Garage Association's (IGA) Operations Manager to reinforce its member offer with effect from 15 October 2012.
