Sapphire Energy Recovery has announced the launch of a new product made from scrap tyres for use in landfill as a leachate drainage blanket. Recovered tyre gravel (RTG50) is derived from end of life tyres shredded into 50mm chips. RTG50 has proven successful as a replacement for landfill drainage engineering providing a sustainable alternative to the use of finite aggregates.
(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper’s Oliver Rubber Co. subsidiary has introduced a new premium retread tread compound and pattern – the Vantage Drive. The new product features what Oliver called a “technologically advanced” tread compound called “Black Armor,” which it said “offers the benefits found in premium truck tires.” Oliver said the Vantage Drive delivers “remarkable treadwear with exceptionally low rolling resistance that optimizes fuel efficiency, while delivering long-lasting casing durability.” Furthermore, the new tread stock reportedly delivers up to 4 per cent better fuel economy than “best-in-class retreads on the market.” The Vantage Drive is available in 205mm (8), 210mm (8.5N), 220mm (9) and 230mm (9.5) sizes with a deep 26/32-inch tread depth.
Faversham-based Les Knight Transport Limited is one of the biggest container hauliers in the South East, running 23 tractor units and 15 tri-axle skeletal trailers on container work out of Dartford and Purfleet. It also provides a ‘traction only’ service pulling other people’s trailers, which accounts for 20 per cent of its activity. The trucks run throughout the UK with the occasional foray into mainland Europe and each covers around 140,000 kilometres a year.

Xenos Technologies, part of the Pricol gorup, has launched a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), suitable for passenger cars, sports utility vehicles and light motor vehicles. The Xenos TPMS consists of two units, a display and sensor. The sensors are fitted to car tyres. In case of low pressure, high temperature or rapid deflation these sensors alert the driver. The display unit is stuck below the rear view mirror and is priced at 12,500 rupees (£145).
SmarTire Systems Inc. announced that Spartan Chassis, Inc, a subsidiary of Spartan Motors, Inc. now offers SmarTire’s tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) as options for its fire truck and motorhome customers. Spartan currently has 36 models riding on its custom chassis and supplies 100 per cent of the custom motorhome chassis for Newmar, Travel Supreme and the American Division of Fleetwood. Spartan also manufactures fire truck chassis and features SmarTire’s products in its catalogue.
SmarTire President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Warkentin said: “We are pleased that Spartan has selected our SmartWave wireless sensing system to fulfil their TPMS requirements. Spartan’s decision supports our market research that owners of recreational vehicles, fire trucks, ambulance and emergency-rescue vehicles are beginning to demand TPMS.”
Apollo Tyres has launched India’s first ever w-rated ultra-high performance directional tyre. Dubbed “Aspire”, the new tyre was unveiled by Dilip Chhabria of DC Design and Onkar S Kanwar, chairman and managing director, Apollo Tyres Ltd at the Autocar Performance in Mumbai. This latest offering from the Apollo stable comes close on the heels of the launch of the V-speed rated Apollo Acelere Sportz earlier this week. Meant for sporty car lovers, currently the 17-inch Aspire can be shod on the Mercedes E and C Class, Audi A6 and A4, Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb, Laura and Octavia and the Honda Accord. More sizes are going to be added in the coming months.
(Akron/Tire Review) A new study by the Opinion Research Corporation says that 78 per cent of Americans want the federal government to impose a 40-mile-per-gallon (MPG) fuel-efficiency standard for vehicles. And, the study shows, nine out of 10 Americans expect gas prices to go up in the near future. The study also said that 70 per cent of Americans now factor expected future gas prices into their vehicle buying criteria, and are looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Forty-five per cent claim they are now more likely to buy a hybrid or other fuel-efficient vehicle than they were six months ago, compared to 30 per cent who are unchanged in their plans.
Chesterfield-based independent drinks company Global Brands Ltd has adopted a joint ATS Euromaster and Michelin tyre policy across its fleet of 61 company cars and 24 commercial vehicles, replacing an agreement with a local independent tyre dealer. ATS Euromaster was appointed for its ability to provide a professional tyre management service for the company’s van and truck fleet, coupled with its expertise as one of the country’s largest fast-fit networks for the car market.

Apollo Tyres Ltd has launched the Apollo Acelere Sportz – a premium V-speed rated tubeless car radial for the rapidly-growing range of premium and luxury cars. Acelere Sportz is India’s first complete range of asymmetric tyres, incorporating many performance, aesthetic, fuel efficiency and safety features.
This premium tyre can be fitted to a wide range of sedans and is an addition to the growing Acelere range of tubeless tyres, catering to the new generation of automobiles on Indian roads. Currently, Apollo commands a 15 per cent share of the tubeless radial market, and, with Acelere Sportz this is expected to grow to 20 per cent in a year’s time.
Elyo Italia recently purchased an LM6000-PD aeroderivative gas turbine generator and 12-year contractual service agreement (CSA) from GE Energy’s aeroderivative business for a combined heat and power (CHP) plant located within the Michelin tyre manufacturing facility in Cuneo, Italy.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems has launched the TM900 High Power (710 75R42), the tallest tyre on record according to the manufacturer. The new pneumatic tyre will be on-show during international exhibitions, starting with EIMA, which is going to be held in Italy – Bologna, from 15 – 19 November. Co-designed with leading tractor manufacturers, the TM900HP 710/75R42, Trelleborg says the new tyre has been specifically developed to fit tractors with up to 300 horsepower or which require high load capacity.
Northwich-based Roberts Bakery has appointed ATS Euromaster as its sole commercial vehicle tyre services provider, responsible for a 90-strong fleet, which includes car-derived vans, rigids and tractor units and trailers. The new agreement will see ATS Euromaster’s truck centre in Warrington fit Michelin tyres across the Roberts Bakery fleet – replacing a previous Bridgestone policy which was managed by a local independent tyre dealer.
“We wanted higher service levels from our supplier and ATS Euromaster was able to offer a range of additional benefits,” says Nick Crank, Transport Manager at Roberts Bakery. “These include fortnightly fleet checks, together with the ability to regroove and turn tyres on the rim to ensure maximum mileage performance.
Michelin North America will soon be marketing WABCO’s Integrated Vehicle Tire Pressure Monitoring System (IVTM) in Canada. The system has been available to European hauliers for the past three years and it will be available in Canada early next year. The IVTM system offers real-time pressure information; an on-board monitor gives the driver a continuous readout of tyre pressure and can warn of incorrect pressure and slow leaks, thanks to an algorithm that constantly compares information between and across axles.
