Don-Bur, the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of commercial vehicle trailer bodies has taken delivery of more than 450 xlite super single forged aluminium wheels from exclusive distributor Motor Wheel Service Distribution. The wheel, which has a reduced weight and increased load index, has been fitted for several clients on the company’s innovative, aerodynamic Teardrop trailer range during its first six months on the market.
Petlas Tyres has added four sizes to its Petlas and Starmaxx brand truck and bus radial tyres. The additions are scheduled to be released by October 2013. According to the company, Petlas engineers started to develop the firm’s TBR tyre program in the first quarter of 2012. They new products are reportedly designed and produced with low rolling resistance, good fuel efficiency, durability and long life in mind.
A new report published by Research and Markets suggests that the global “green” or eco-tyre market is expected to grow at a 9.82 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2012 and 2016.
The announcement this week that the MoT testing fee will be frozen until 2015 has annoyed many in the motor trade, not least Stuart James of the RMIF’s Independent Garage Association. James said, “Whilst the RMI acknowledges the Government’s efforts to support the motorist it is outraged that it has failed to recognise the spiralling costs incurred by garages. The last official review of the MoT test price was in 2010.”
Michelin Aircraft Tire has announced it will provide its Air X radial for original equipment fitment on Dassault’s newest large cabin long range business jet, the Falcon 5X. “Michelin is proud to have been selected by Dassault as its official partner and the sole source supplier on the new Falcon 5X aircraft,” said Mathias Kratzsch, Michelin Aircraft Tire Company’s director of Marketing and Sales.
The company that gave the world the forged aluminium wheel has released what it calls the “most advanced aluminium wheel alloy in 45 years.” Alcoa says the new lightweight alloy, which it calls MagnaForce, is on average 16.5 per cent stronger than its 6061 alloy in similar applications. The use of MagnaForce will thus allow for lighter, stronger wheels with the same corrosion-resistant characteristics found in the current Alcoa range.

Continental is expanding its range of trailer tyres to include an increased load index option specifically designed for regional delivery applications. Thanks to its 5 tonne load capacity, the HTR 2 XL 385/65 R 22.5 with load index 164 is suitable for vehicles with a curb weight (without trailer) of up to 25 tonnes, including the city semitrailers used for making deliveries throughout Europe.

Sea freight rates are currently on a downward trend that looks likely to continue for the foreseeable future, says freight forwarding specialist Rob Shelley of Maritime Cargo Services. According to industry feedback, this year’s peak season from Asia to Northern Europe got off to a slow start in July, and remained unconvincing even up to the beginning of September. Exports from Asia to Northern Europe in the second quarter were only the same as during the same period last year, and year-on-year growth in the first seven months of 2013 reached just one per cent.
The new 63 registration plate boosted the car market for September, seeing it rise 12.1 per cent to hit 403,136 registrations, according to figures released by the SMMT. This made September 2013 the best performing month since March 2008 with the highest volume in 66 months. Private registrations have risen 16.7 per cent over year-to-date, helping the overall market rise 10.8 per cent. More than 1 in 7 new cars registered in the month is UK-built.
