New Van Tyre Delivers 30% Lower Rolling Resistance, says Conti

Van drivers looking for a tyre designed with rolling resistance in mind have a new option open to them in the form of Continental’s VancoEco range. The manufacturer states the new tyre has been specifically developed for van such as the Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit and Volkswagen T5 and claims the VancoEco reduces rolling resistance by around 30 per cent – which equals a four per cent fuel saving. At the same time, adds Continental, the engineers have managed to keep the braking distance on dry and wet roads short, giving the VancoEco performance “like a car tyre.” The VanEco range is already available and has already been approved as original equipment on the new ‘BlueEfficiency’ models in Mercedes-Benz Viano and Vito line-ups.

European Launch for Bridgestone Ecopia Truck Range

In early September, Bridgestone released its latest European market Ecopia passenger car tyre. The introduction of this environment-oriented product has now been followed up with the European launch of an Ecopia truck tyre range. At the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, Bridgestone Europe CEO Mac Ohashi formally announced the line-up’s debut in our region.

Hankook CEO Says Industry Needs to Pull Together on Consumer Education

In his keynote speech at the Tire Society annual conference yesterday in Akron, Hankook Tire Co. president and CEO Seung Hwa Suh called on the global tyre industry to pull together to improve consumer tyre education, reports Tire Review. And Suh warned that tyre-makers needed to be more mindful of their impact on the environment. Suh’s comments came on the first day of the 29th annual Tire Society Annual Meeting and Conference on Tire Science and Technology.

Nokian Introduces Hakka Green Summer Line-Up

Nokian has launched a new summer tyre range, the Hakka Green. The Finnish tyre maker describes the Hakka Green as a tyre that “uniquely combines the needs of drivers on northern roads” and can reliably deal with all summer conditions, whether it be hot roads, wet weather conditions or late autumn’s steadily cooling weather. Green credentials for the tyre are earned through “extremely low” rolling resistance; Nokian says it is 15 per cent lower than that of its predecessor, the Hakka H. This equals a decrease in fuel consumption of almost three per cent, and Nokian adds that fuel savings in comparison with “average” summer tyres is some five to eight per cent.

Hankook’s Suh to Give Keynote Address at US Conference

Hankook Tire vice chairman and CEO Seung Hwa Suh is scheduled to present a keynote speech at a conference organised by Ohio, USA based organisation Tire Society. The September 20 address on the opening day of the 29th Annual Business Meeting and Conference on Tire Science and Technology is titled ‘Tire Industry Opportunities and Challenges’, and the Tire Society reports that Suh will highlight current opportunities and challenges facing the tyre industry along with ways to improve and adapt technologies for a changing market. Suh will also suggest a future guidance for tyre companies with emphasis on fuel and economic efficiency as well as the eco-friendly trend.

Apollo Reports African Operations Halted by Strike

Apollo Tyres has notified the Bombay Stock Exchange that employees at its factories in Africa have joined a nationwide industry strike organised by National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). Apollo states that “consequent upon declaration of a general strike in tyre industry in South Africa, the workers of both the plants at Durban and Ladysmith of ATSA (Apollo Tyres South Africa) have also gone on strike.”

European Market Launch for Bridgestone Ecopia EP150

Bridgestone’s Ecopia EP150 eco-friendly tyre, unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany just under a year ago, has finally been launched in the European market. The tyre will be introduced as an integrated replacement and original equipment product, targeting compact and mid-sized passenger cars with 14 to 16-inch rim sizes in 55 to 65 series. At present seven 14 and 15-inch sizes have been released, with a further one 15-inch and two 16-inch fitments scheduled to be launched in January 2011.

Michelin Fill Up With Air Campaign the “Biggest to Date”

Michelin says drivers in the UK are losing out on more than £440 million pounds by driving with the under-inflated tyres. The French giant is publicising the effects of this perpetual problem via its Fill Up With Air roadshow, on which a Michelin team offers free tyre checks. Michelin’s research, based on a parc of 30.3 million cars driving 12,000 miles per annum at 35mpg, with fuel costing £1.20 per litre, suggests more than 370 million litres of fuel are being wasted each year.

Duncan Platt New Conti UK Truck Sales Manager

Duncan Platt has joined Continental Tyre Group taking on the role of general sales manager – truck with immediate effect. Platthas more than 24 years experience in the tyre industry in a variety of sales and management roles, including most recently working with Bridgestone on their pan European, regional and national fleet accounts.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for me,” said Duncan Platt, “I’m really looking forward to the challenge of working across all the tyre brands but especially to working with customers to enhance their fuel savings with the benefits of Continentals fantastic product range and services.”

Nizhnekamskshina Ramping up Production

Russia’s OAO Tatneft states production of solid steel core (SSC) tyres is to increase at the Nizhnekamskshina factory it commissioned late last year. According to the manufacturer, this year it will draw upon technology provided by Germany’s Continental to produce 130,000 SSC certified tyres in four different sizes, and by the end of the year a total of six sizes will be certified. Starting in September tyres will be shipped to the vehicle manufacturer OAO KamAZ for OE fitment on a number of trucks.

Trelleborg Launches New Twin Radial Tyre

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has launched a new 710/50 R26.5 twin radial tyre. According to the company, the new product offers enhanced flotation characteristics that protect the soil, the driver’s health, lowers noise levels and contributes to reduced overall operating costs for the farmer. The twin radial features a 15 per cent wider footprint area, additional lugs and a longer central block compared to the previous version. This means an increased land/sea ratio and 14 per cent deeper lugs.

New Truck Tyre Campaign from Yokohama

Yokohama Tire Corp. has launched SmartSolution, a new communication and promotion push targeting commercial tyre dealers, fleet owners and truck operators in the USA, reports Tire Review. “Now more than ever, fleet owners and truck operators are faced with the pressure of effectively managing tyres as assets in their business,” said John Cooney, Yokohama director of commercial sales.

Yokohama Tire Releases Latest ‘Tips’ Video

Motorists in every country have their preferred method of choosing the right tyre for their vehicle; for us Brits the standard procedure is to stroll into a tyre dealer and ask for the cheapest tyre in the applicable size, while the Germans studiously peruse comparative tyre tests published in leading Automotive magazines. The Americans also like to get the facts, but this information often comes in the more relaxed format of tyre ‘tips’. Yokohama Tire is one such provider of tips for consumers on the hunt for the perfect black circle, and it has now released the third installment in a series of educational videos.

Conti Develops Smartphone TPMS Software

Continental’s tyre pressure monitoring system will soon be able to report to smart phones via pressure sensors in intelligent tyres. According to the company, the “filling assistant” system also lets the driver know when they reach the right pressure during inflation. Conti expects users to experience “enhanced driving safety and fuel efficiency” as a result of the system. The first series production of the Filling Assistant in new vehicles is expected from 2013 onwards.

The application, developed by Continental’s Interior Division, communicates wirelessly with the smartphone and specifies the exact inflation pressure of each tyre using a brief honk and blink signal can be given to confirm when the tyre has been inflated to the correct pressure level. Technical requirements for the system are a tyre pressure monitoring system with the corresponding sensors in the tyres and factory-integrated vehicle electronics with a wireless interface.

Extra Slow Steaming is Affecting Transit Times

Whether you believe it’s simply ‘green wash’ or not, industry sources are reporting that the increase in ‘extra-slow-steaming’ (ESS) is having a profound effect on the international freighting sector. The knock-on effect for tyre importers and exporters is that ESS adds a few days to transit times.

Officially, ESS is the shipping industry's response to cutting global carbon emissions and is supposed to cut vessel emissions by some 30 per cent. It’s now the norm on the majority of trade routes although the cynic would say that it’s simply a significant cost cutting exercise, keeps ships in employment and, in fact, was widely used just to redress the supply-demand imbalance that built up in 2009. It’s estimated that in May alone, speed cuts to between 17-19 knots from the usual 23-25 kept almost 100 ships in employment.
