Updated ViaMichelin site launched

Using input drawn from users, Michelin has updated its ViaMichelin website. The French manufacturer reports that the new site – which is also available for mobile devices with the free ViaMichelin Mobile application – features completely reworked ergonomics that make it easier to use. Michelin describes the most important additions to the new version as being a map on the home page that is geo-positioned to the user’s last search, highly visible itinerary options, unique data-entry fields and, for users in France, the integration of traffic conditions when calculating travel time.

UK company to produce fuel from organic waste

Gazasia, a UK company that develops waste-derived biofuels, is to begin operations in the Philippines to develop a vehicle fuel made from organic waste products in landfill. The company creates liquid biomethane – a carbon-neutral, sustainable and high-quality vehicle fuel – by cleaning and refining the natural gas produced by organic waste found in landfill sites.

Michelin previews “largest ever” farm tyre at Cereals 2012

Michelin will use the occasion of Cereals 2012 to exhibit its largest ever farm tyre; a new dimension in the AxioBib range designed for high horsepower tractors. The Michelin AxioBib IF 900/60 R 42 has a diameter of 2.15 metres and will be launched onto the UK replacement tyre market in July 2012. The flotation tyre, using the French manufacturer’s Improved Flexion technology, is suited to demanding crop farming operations such as ploughing, where farmers and contractors are increasingly utilising larger machines to plough fields faster.

Hamilton F1’s seventh 2012 winner, as ex-Pirelli man takes 2nd

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton became the seventh winner from seven Grands Prix this year, overtaking Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso during the last eight laps to claim a spectacular victory by 2.5 seconds. Former Pirelli test driver, Romain Grosjean drove his Lotus to a career-best second place, having made a one-stop strategy work to his advantage. Vettel pitted with seven laps to go, and Alonso dropped back, having used the same strategy as Grosjean, pitting only two laps earlier.

Conti adds to ‘fifth generation’ performance range

Infinity INF 050: ecological performance

Infinity Tyres describes its INF 050 as a tyre that combines performance with a great respect for the environment. This particular tyre, which is available in up to 20 different sizes, kicks off by being completely free of aromatic oils and thus is fully compliant with REACH legislation. Furthermore, Infinity says the INF 050 benefits from its Eco-Friendly Fuel Efficient (EFFE) manufacturing process.

Alliance unveils a new approach to dual excavator tyres

At Reifen 2012, the Alliance Tire Group presented a new off-road tyre it says represents an innovative approach to dual-tyre configuration for excavators. Called the 528 Dual Master, the new product solves the problem of stones becoming embedded between double tyres. It does this through the use of a unique sidewall construction that enables close contact between the two tyres. “There is normally a rubber spacer between the tyres, but stones nevertheless get between the tyres and cause punctures,” commented ATG marketing communications manager Tal Rappoport to Tyres & Accessories. “The 528 Dual Master is the first tyre model for excavators that doesn’t require this spacer, and stones therefore can’t get penetrate this space.

Michelin maintains top position in Japan winter tyre survey

For the ninth consecutive year, Michelin has topped the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2012 Japan Winter Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study. Out of a possible 1,000 points, Michelin beat nine other brands with a score of 644, 30 points ahead of second-placed Bridgestone. The J.D. Power study was based on responses from 7,461 vehicle owners who purchased new winter tyres for their car between May 2009 and February 2012 and who are still using these tyres. The study was fielded in February 2012 and measured customer satisfaction with winter tyres by examining six key factors: tyre performance in snow-covered road conditions, performance in icy road conditions, durability/reliability, ride/quietness on dry or wet roads, handling/traction on dry or wet roads and appearance.

Continental to build hot retread plant in Western Europe

Continental AG is investing in a hot retreading production plant in Western Europe, the company has announced. A statement explained that this decision aims to underline the “great importance of retreading business for Continental” and adds weight to its ContiLifeCycle concept. No details of the amount of investment have been released. The location of the new production site will be announced at a later date.

Fuel duty campaign needs more support says RHA

The Road Haulage Association is pleased that to date, 28 MPs have pledged their support to scrap the proposed 3p per litre rise in fuel duty, due on 1st August.

"It's great news that these MPs have come out in support of scrapping the August 3ppl increase", said RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning.

FairFuelUK success at PR awards

The FTA backed campaign FairFuelUK has been recognised for its tireless work in lobbying the Government in order to stop planned fuel duty increases and fight for lower fuel prices. In the same week that the campaign sees MPs from various political parties uniting at Westminster in an urgent call to scrap the August 3p fuel duty rise, the organisation created by Peter Carroll Associates won the prestigious CIPR 2012 Excellence Award for Public Affairs which applauded the organisation's work and credited its achievements in the category which acknowledged 'a campaign designed to inform the public policy agenda or influence the legislative process.'

Shell UK has announced plans to bring back forecourt attendants at more than 300 of its petrol stations by the end of the summer, rising to 600 locations by mid-2013. As well as dispensing fuel, the AA-trained staff will also offer basic car maintenance, such as checking tyres.

Mitas to exhibit new agricultural tyres at Cereals 2012

Mitas Tyres Ltd will exhibit two new tyres, the HC70 and AC70T, and the Continental SVT CHO (Cyclic Harvesting Operation) harvester tyre on its stand at Cereals 2012. The HC70 is an adaptable 70 series tyre designed for use on 90hp to 180hp tractors. The AC70T has deeper lugs, making it suitable for heavy field work. The show will take place at Boothby Graffoe, Lincolnshire on 13 and 14 June.
