Alcoa Wheel Products Europe has introduced four new wheels for truck and trailer applications at the IAA trade show in Hannover, Germany. The fitments comprise: 22.5×11.75”, 45mm offset wheel for inloaders; a 22.5×11.75”, 80mm offset wheel; 22.5×11.75”, 135mm offset and five ton load index; and a 22.5×13.00” lighter wheel with higher load capacity.
CES has published a new product guide to showcase its engine management components. The company says distributers need to stock a wider range of engine management parts as vehicle technology advances. CES says it has rapidly increased its range in recent years, stocking a wide range of sensors, turbos, fuel systems and diesel and petrol injectors.

Car parts distributor CES (UK) has released its latest Workshop Essentials catalogue. Issue 9 contains 25 per cent more products than ever before, making it the biggest edition yet. Comprehensively redesigned with an entirely new look, it features some of the industry’s leading brands, such as Comma, Wynn’s, Kent Car Care, Sealey and Ring Automotive. Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel took his second win of the season in Singapore with a two-stop tyre strategy, which prevailed following two safety car periods. Vettel started from third on the grid with the P Zero Red supersoft tyre and then completed two stints on the P Zero Yellow soft tyre, which had been nominated for the weekend. Vettel’s winning margin was nine seconds over McLaren’s Jenson Button, who adopted the same strategy, pitting four laps later for his first pit stop than Vettel.
At the end of August Dunlop Motorsport announced it will develop tyres for the world's first hydrogen fuel cell racing car. GreenGT H2, as it is known, will compete in the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours, and features electric powertrain technology. Dunlop will be working closely with the team, in its words, to drive tyre technology forward to provide the grip that will maximise the ‘future power’ of motorsport.
On 11 September, Lanxess broke ground on its new neodymium-based performance butadiene rubber (Nd-PBR) plant in Singapore. The facility is being built with an investment of around 200 million euros and is expected to start production in the first half of 2015. Planned annual capacity of 140,000 tonnes will serve the growing market for low rolling resistance tyres, particularly in Asia.
With two new winter tyres for 2012, Pirelli is enthusiastically promoting the benefits of fitting specialist cold weather tyres in the UK. Joining the Italian manufacturer’s Sottozero Serie II high performance winter tyre are the recently introduced Winter SnowcontrolSerie 3, designed for smaller cars, and the Scorpion Winter SUV tyre, which was displayed at Reifen 2012, and replaces the Scorpion Ice.
Toyo’s range of winter tyres is designed to tackle all wintry driving conditions, aiming to increase drivers’ safety in more conditions than just the handful of snowy days (or weeks) in the UK. Toyo stresses that its winter tyres do not require snow to appreciate the benefits they offer. Toyo identifies slush, ice, mud and cold December downpours as conditions in which the tyres will “prove their worth in keeping drivers on the move”. The company’s computer-optimised tread designs come in a wide variety of sizes to suit all vehicles, from small compact cars to ultra high performance models to 4×4’s and SUV’s.

That’s the view put forward by Banner, the battery maker, which suggests it is prudent to supply and fit the best battery you can: “Budget batteries are fine for older cars without any electrical consumers but there are less of those on the roads today.”
Following the announcement by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) that it has launched a review into whether reductions in crude oil are being passed on to motorists, new research from leading vehicle auction company, British Car Auctions (BCA), highlights motorists' continued worries about the cost of fuel.
The Road Haulage Association has also applauded the news that the Office of Fair Trading have called for information on the UK petrol and diesel sector.
"Diesel accounts for over a third of a haulier's operating costs", said RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning. "Between June 2007 and June 2012, diesel prices have risen by 43 per cent; a rise which will no doubt have had a very significant depressing effect on the economy."
"The Office of Fair Trading’s (OFT) decision to look into petrol and diesel prices is a significant step forward for the Petrol Retailers' Association’s (PRA) campaign for a market study into anti-competitive pricing in the UK fuel market" said Brian Madderson, PRA Chairman.
"It is encouraging that the new car market remained stable in what is traditionally a low volume months for car sales" said Sue Robinson, Director of the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers across the UK, commenting on the SMMT’s new car registration figures.
Technology drawn from tyre retreading forms the core component of a new truck and bus tyre manufacturing process developed by Bridgestone Corporation. The Japanese manufacturer says the new technology, which it calls ‘Trisaver’, is expected to result in both significant resource conservation and enhanced fuel efficiency. The name Trisaver, incidentally, refers to the three types of savings Bridgestone says the technology enables – savings of costs, resources and CO2 emissions.
Patrick McLoughlin has been named Transport Secretary, replacing Justine Greening. As Conservative MP for Derbyshire Dales, McLoughlin was formerly chief whip and parliamentary secretary to the treasury.
