Michelin celebrates truck radials’ 60th anniversary

Michelin has marked the 60th anniversary of the introduction of radial truck tyres in 1952. The company says its first Michelin X Radial truck tyre helped to transform the road transport industry, which until then was using cross-ply tyres. The company says radialisation made trucking safer and more efficient. Of course, following the innovation, other manufacturers pursued the same path, meaning that radial tyres accounted for 100 per cent of the Western European truck tyre market in 2011. Michelin now estimates that radials account for 73 per cent of truck tyres worldwide.

Vortex: New premises, new products

Despite the name, there is no way that Vortex Exhaust Technology Ltd is getting sucked down by the negative economic environment. On the contrary, according to the Grays, Essex-based business, things have moved quickly since the company relocated from their old premises at the end of 2011. The company can now be found in a much bigger and brighter unit on the Globe Industrial estate in Grays. Having spent the last year organise things at the new facility managing director Barry Mead reports that he is looking forward to the next chapter in the company’s business development:

Bridgestone winter PCR, SUV tyres prevail in ADAC test

Bridgestone’s Blizzak LM-80 was the clear winner of German automobile club ADAC, TCS and ÖAMTC’s new SUV/CUV winter tyre tests (size 215/65 R16 on a Volkswagen Tiguan), while its Blizzak LM-32 received the association’s highest snow ranking. The passenger car tyre was awarded AutoBild’s highest winter rating, published in early October.

Alignment needed for tyres to reach full label potential, says Pro-Align

Tyre labelling regulations that come into force the week after next offer switched-on workshops an even greater opportunity to sell profit-boosting wheel alignment checks, opines wheel alignment specialist Pro-Align. The label is expected to help retailers move from a primarily price-based, commodity style transaction to a more consultative approach, based on differentiated customer needs or preferences – “a perfect scenario for educating drivers about wheel alignment,” the company says.

As if fuel wasn't expensive enough…

Financially, filling your petrol tank can be a sobering experience, but, according to figures from Halfords Autocentres, for 300,000 UK drivers a year, the cost can be astronomical. The reason? A misfuelling mishap, which can cost anything from £500 to £3,000 to rectify, once costs such as garage call-outs, refilling the tank and additional transport costs are factored in. Even worse news for the motorist, says Halfords, is that only half of the misfuelling motorists are able to claim the costs back on their insurance.

Michelin scoops two TAFF awards

Michelin has won two prestigious Tyre and Fast-Fit (TAFF) awards at this year’s ceremony held by the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) held on 10 October in Manchester. The company picked up both the Industry Advertising award and the Product Innovation award at the association’s annual dinner hosted this week in Manchester.

Michelin to provide tyre tips at Sandvic safety day

On 18 October, engineering company Sandvik Holdings is co-ordinating a safety day with its driver training supplier Road Skills, which aims to teach advanced driving techniques and raise awareness of the importance of correct vehicle maintenance. During the course of the day, Michelin will host a safety presentation covering the importance of correct tyre pressures and tread depths, the impact tyres have on handling, and the benefits of cold weather tyres. Amongst other things, qualified instructors will teach core staff and senior management from Sandvik Holdings’ UK operation how to improve handling, emergency reactions, manoeuvring and off-road skills.

Michelin launches X Line truck range and demonstrates worn performance

Michelin has launched a new range of long haul orientated truck tyres. As you would imagine, the French manufacturer's latest generation of commercial vehicle technology is said to lead the market and surpass the high standards of the previous range. The latest tyres even include a label beating grade A fuel efficiency trailer fitment. But what's arguably more interesting is that Michelin is promoting the whole life strengths of its new products and their “total performance” at a time when all eyes are on the three characteristics printed on a certain self adhesive sticker.

Happy birthday, speedometer

This week an important automotive component celebrates its 110th birthday. No, it’s not the pneumatic tyre – John Boyd Dunlop is credited with its creation in 1887 – the birthday kid is the speedometer. SmartWay verification for two Bandag products

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added to Bandag retread products, the B710 FuelTech and B197 FuelTech, to its list of SmartWay verified low rolling resistance tyres. Announcing the additions, Bert Jones, Bridgestone Commercial Solutions manager, Product Marketing, TBR, commented: “We are constantly striving to develop eco-friendly products and processes while meeting the fuel saving needs of our customers.”

Goodyear AMT named a Popular Mechanics ‘breakthrough’

US publication Popular Mechanics has named Goodyear’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) a 2012 Breakthrough Award winner. The tyre maker, along with this year’s other awardees, will be honoured at a ceremony in New York City on 4 October.

European launch for Bridgestone’s Ecopia EP001S

On display at last week’s Paris Motor Show alongside Bridgestone’s concept 100 per cent sustainable materials tyre was the “star” of the tyre maker’s show stand – the new flagship Ecopia EP001S. The new tyre was presented in size 195/65R15 and is Bridgestone’s first tyre to achieve an ‘A’ label rating for both fuel efficiency and wet grip, as well as the first tyre in the world to receive the top grade in Japan’s tyre rating system. The Ecopia EP001S is now available in European markets.
