US Tyre Burning to Go Ahead Despite Protests

Despite a bitter campaign of environmental protests, the US Environmental Protection Agency looks set to grant approval for a paper mill in Vermont to conduct a two-week trial, burning shredded tyres as fuel.

The company estimates that it could save up to $3.8 million a year by burning 72 tonnes of tyres a day, but environmentalists are concerned over possible health hazards and have pledged to continue their campaign.

It is estimated that the USA produces around 290 million scrap tyres annually, of which 140 million are disposed of as tyre-derived fuel. This is six times the number disposed of by this method in 1990.

Finnish tyre manufacturer Nokian recently released the country king agricultural trailer tyre. With the launch of the new product, Nokian is aiming, like other manufacturers, to satisfy the demands farmers and contractors that need tyres that can cope with increased load capacity.

Record US Tyre Shipments

Passenger car replacement tyre shipments are expected to reach a record total of 205 million units this year, according to the latest RMA figures. The previous record was 198.9 million units, set in 2000. This will be the first time shipments have exceeded 200 million units in any given year. Similarly, tyre shipments for the combined original equipment (OE) and replacement consumer and commercial sectors are expected to increase by 2.2 per cent compared to 2004 as a result of continued steady economic growth.

SmarTire Unveils SmartWave Architecture

SmarTire Systems Inc has launched a new wireless gateway product line that will carry the SmartWave(TM) brand. This SmartWave brand will apply to all products developed under SmarTire’s wireless gateway architecture. Under the SmartWave brand, the company will initially introduce three versions of its tyre pressure and monitoring systems to meet the varying needs of fleet customers.

Disqualification Gives Pirelli Victory in Bahrain

In the final FIA GT Championship event, held at Sakhir, Bahrain, in late November, the Ferrari 550 Maranello driven by Gabriele Gardel has been excluded from the final results because the vehicle did not contain the required minimum of three litres of fuel in its tank at the end of the race.

The disqualification (which is being appealed) cancels the points earned by Gardel, so that the FIA GT Drivers’ Championship goes to Michael Bartels and Timo Scheider in the Pirelli P Zero Racing-shod Maserati MC12 of the Vitaphone Racing Team.

Dumping Waste Oil is Illegal

The Environment Agency today launched a new awareness campaign reminding companies, businesses and local mechanics to dispose of waste oil safely and legally or face tough penalties.

Under the new Waste Incineration Directive – to be implemented on 28th December 2005 – companies that incinerate waste oils such as, power stations and road stone coaters, must meet strict new environmental regulations. As a result, the price of disposal is expected to increase.

20 per cent of Tyres Illegal

Data from the NTDA’s TyreCheck survey shows that just under 20 per cent of tyres are not replaced until the tread depth is worn to below 1.6mm. Members of the association inspected over 10,000 cars brought into their premises during the period of the TyreCheck. All the tyres, including the spare, were checked for tread depth, visual condition and pressure.

Mahle Boosts UK Warehouse Capacity

Mahle Filter Systems UK has opened a new, purpose-built warehouse at Salisbury, doubling its storage capacity for automotive filters and engine components to 40,000 square feet. Investment in the new building was £2.5 million and it is equipped with the latest stock picking and handling systems. Products under storage include Mahle and Knecht oil, air, fuel and cabin filters and the range of Mahle Original engine components. Mahle says that the new facility will enable the company to meet its new business development strategy and to accommodate the expanding range of products for the UK and Irish aftermarkets.

Dunlop Promotes Below 7 Degrees Campaign

North American tyre marketers have taken the comical approach to promoting winter tyre use. A recent press release published from Goodyear’s Akron, Ohio HQ asks: “Waiting for Groundhog Day before deciding on winter tyres for the family vehicle?” Instead Dunlop representatives urge drives not to wait until the
”furry prognosticators make their predictions.”

First CM Primary Shredder for Japan

Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Sarasota Florida Operations and e&Resources of Seoul, Korea are proud to announce the sale of the first CM Primary Tyre Shredder and CM Liberator to be installed in Japan. The equipment has been purchased by the Takahashi Shoji Corporation, which is located on the north island of Hokkaido in the city of Obihiro.

Will Drivers Switch From SUVs to CUVs?

In response to sky-high fuel prices, US consumers are switching their SUVs for CUVs or crossover utility vehicles. Sema’s Research and Information Center has published figures which suggest that although American vehicle owners are becoming more efficiency conscious, there are no signs that they will abandon SUVs altogether. 56 per cent of those surveyed indicated that they do not plan to downsize their vehicles at all.

Goodyear Tyres for Hybrid Truck

A prototype hybrid U.S. Air Force aircraft refueller truck built on a Mack Truck chassis features a new mixed-service tyre from Goodyear.

Goodyear Unisteel G287 MSA tyres (315/80R22.5) are mounted in the steer position on the 6,000-gallon refueller. Mack Trucks Inc. and the U.S. Air Force Advanced Power Technology Office developed the hybrid diesel-electric truck. Eight Goodyear Unisteel G286 tyres (12R22.5) are mounted on the vehicle’s rear drive axles.

Watch Your Power Consumption

Battery manufacturer Varta has highlighted an anomaly regarding automotive batteries – with today’s products vastly superior to those of a few years ago in both performance and longevity, how come the battery is still the cause of most calls to motoring organisations and breakdown service providers?

The answer, says Varta, is that there are so many power consumers on today’s cars that these can adversely impact on the ability of the battery and alternator to provide constant energy, particularly in winter where the nominal output of the alternator can be easily exceeded in even the shortest journey. And we are talking about modern cars with healthy batteries with comparatively low power consumers, such as lights and heaters.
