Michelin Pumps Blow Away Competition in Auto Express Test

Michelin foot-pumps have taken an impressive one-two clean sweep in comparison tests run by Britain’s biggest selling motoring weekly, Auto Express. The Michelin twin-barrel pump was awarded the “Best Buy” 5-star rating for performance and accuracy whilst the Michelin single-barrel foot pump took the runner-up “Recommended” award and a 4-star rating.

The two foot-pumps from the Michelin motoring accessories range were compared with eight competitors’ products in detailed tests carried out by Auto Express’ technical experts. The accuracy of the pressure gauges and their pumping power were at the heart of the tests, which also awarded points for stability in use, build quality, hose length and ease of tyre-valve connection.

New Commercial TPMS from Mobile Awareness

Transportation safety products company, Mobile Awareness, released a new generation of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) products geared toward Commercial Trucks, Utility Vehicles, RVs and Trailers – the MA-TPMS. The system automatically and continuously monitors tyre status, alerting the driver to abnormal conditions with an audible alert and LCD display indicator. It not only warns of low-pressure and high-pressure levels, but also monitors hazardous tyre temperature conditions. All three warning settings are programmable by the user.

“There are many advantages to monitoring and maintaining properly inflated tyres, the most important being the reduction of fatalities and injuries from tyre related hazards,” remarked Gary Rothstein, president of Mobile Awareness. “As we expand our offering of transportation safety products, tire monitoring will be a key part of our focus to prevent vehicle accidents.”

Boosting Economy with a Software Tweak

A Dutch scientist claims that the fuel consumption in many of today’s cars could be reduced by 2.6 per cent through the addition of new software to the engine’s computer. John Kessels from the University of Eindhoven worked in conjunction with Ford to develop software that would improve engine performance, and the initial results of this collaboration look promising.

Aldi Claims Tyre Savings

Aldi is fitting Michelin A2 Energy tyres to all vehicles based at its southern distribution centre in Chelmsford, Essex, following a 12 month road test which demonstrated a fuel saving of 2.3 per cent. The trial saw a 38-tonne Scania tractor unit (X268 KON) fitted with Energy tyres, with fuel consumption measured on a weekly basis and compared against figures for the same vehicle over the previous 12 month period.

Nitrogen Truck Tyres Inflation

ABAC, which claims to be the UK’s largest supplier of compressors to the tyre industry has released a nitrogen generator that works with most compressed air systems. It uses a molecular sieve system to remove oxygen and from the compressed air to leave 97 per ent pure nitrogen at up to 12 bar (175 psi). “The system gives more consistent tyre pressures and tyres run cooler, cutting the risks of blow-outs;” says the firm’s Nick Poole. “Lower fuel consumption and longer tyre life should mean a medium haulage fleet will get a pay-back in less than six months.”

“With under-inflated tyres responsible for 6 per cent of all fatal motorway accidents – why isn’t more done to prevent tyre pressure?,” asks tyre pressure monitoring company, TPM Systems. For as little as 1p a day says it an bring a range of systems to the motorist. The Quik-Chek has been developed as a safe and quick way to accurately gauge tyre pressure – by simply pressing a button. However, while the gauge design is, by its very nature a direct monitoring system it does not update drivers in realtime or while they are driving. On the other hand it must be significantly cheaper than the aftermarket alternatives.

PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Stop and Start System

PSA Peugeot Citroën unveiled its new Stop and Start system at a ceremony in Paris earlier this week.

With the new system, the engine is automatically turned off and is in standby mode, when the vehicle stops at traffic lights and traffic jams. The engine instantly starts up again when the brake pedal is released, with the vehicle pulling away once the accelerator is pressed.

The Citroën C3 1.4i 16V Stop and Start, will feature Michelin tyres when it is rolled out in early November, and will be the first mass-produced car equipped with this environmentally conscious system. It will also be combined with SensoDrive technology; an electronically controlled manual gearbox. The new system is expected to be gradually extended to other Citroën and Peugeot vehicles.

The Group claims that the system has reduced fuel consumption by 10 per cent for city driving, six per cent in a standard combined cycle and up to 15 per cent in heavy traffic. CO2 emissions are said to be reduced by a similar proportion.

“Transporting” Truck Tyre Test: Super Single vs Dual Tyres

The September edition of the German magazine “Transporting” has tested whether or not using super single tyres instead of conventional dual tyres on trucks can save fuel. Examining the effect that a lower rolling resistance has on reducing fuel consumption was not the only idea behind the comparison of both tyres. The testers also wanted to check if and how, the driving characteristics of a truck are influenced by the reduced weight of the super broad tyres. And the results – they found that utilising super singles on the rear axle “recognisably” deteriorates the spring/damping characteristics. However, there were no differences found between the two types of tyres with regards to lane keeping and traction. But, in accordance with expectations fuel savings of around four per cent were recorded during the tests.

Beru Develop Biodiesel Sensor

As a result of its collaboration with VW, Beru is developing a new “biodiesel sensor.” Development of the sensor is necessary in order to solve a technical problem that arises during the alternative combustion of mineral DF (diesel fuel) and RME (rape seed oil methyl ester, also known as biodiesel) in the same engine. The more stringent emission limits of the Euro IV and Euro V standards can only be met when engine management is precisely tuned to fuel consumption.

Continental Temic holds key to lower emissions

Continental Temic’s ISAD system is being seen as the key to lower fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions. ISAD stands for Integrated Starter Alternator Damper, and following the debut of this technology in a General Motors light truck in 2003, the system is to be fitted to another US-built vehicle later this year.

Beru Tyre Pressure Monitors For Mercedes

Beru AG is to supply Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles and trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull with tyre pressure monitoring systems from this summer. The monitors will be used on the new Actros, which are supplied with super singles, making the truck 300 kg lighter and reducing fuel consumption. A high-pressure support tube inside the tyre acts as back-up. Beru’s TSS Tire Safety System transmits data on pressure and temperature to the in-cab display every 60 seconds.
