“Faultless” run for Pirelli at second F1 test

Following the conclusion of the official Formula One group test, held in Jerez, Pirelli reports its PZero tyres have enjoyed “another faultless run.” The four days of testing at the Spanish circuit presented the opportunity to present the full range of Pirelli tyres, although the wide variety of medium to high speed corners at Jerez meant that the supersoft tyres saw very little action and the teams instead favoured the soft, medium and hard compounds.

Pirelli’s PZero F1 tyre on track today in Valencia 2011 testing opener

Formula One’s teams have got their hands on the latest specification Pirelli PZero tyre in Valencia today, where the 2011 cars have seen their first action. Arriving on 31 January ahead of testing from 1-3 February, Paul Hembery Pirelli’s motorsport director stated: “We arrive in Valencia with all our compounds defined and ready to offer the teams different tyre solutions, having enjoyed an intense and fruitful collaboration so far. This test will provide us with some useful feedback and a valuable taste of the season to come.”

No favours for Ferrari: Tronchetti Provera

Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera has strongly ruled out the possibility of the new tyre supplier to Formula One favouring the team synonymous with Italian motor-racing Ferrari. However, Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who struggled to make an impact in the 2010 season barring an unedifying incident when he allowed title-challenging teammate Fernando Alonso to usurp his position at the German Grand Prix, hopes the new tyres’ characteristics will help him regain some lost form in what will be a pivotal season for the Brazilian.

Di Grassi Rumoured to Replace de la Rosa in Pirelli F1 Seat

Lucas di Grassi is rumoured in motorsport news sources to be the new Formula One test driver for sole tyre supplier Pirelli. Di Grassi spent last season driving for the newly-established Virgin team, but lost his 2011 seat to Jerome d’Ambrosio of Belgium.

Pirelli Seeks 2011 Spec F1 Car to Continue Tyre Development

Pirelli is seeking the chance to test its Formula One tyre on a 2011 season specification model, in order to continue to refine its tyres for its first season as exclusive tyre supplier. The manufacturer has thus far run its development tyres on a 2009 Toyota, acquired from the team following its exit from the series at the end of that season.

Pirelli Completes Private F1 Tyre Testing

Incoming Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli reports the completion of its private testing campaign on January 18 ahead of the 2011 F1 season. In the latest testing, held in Abu Dhabi, Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa spent four days at the wheel of the Toyota TF109 that has been used to test the Italian rubber since August: two days to run through the entire range of PZero dry tyres and two nights during which he tested the wet and intermediate tyres. The wet tyre test was, Pirelli noted, the first occasion ever that a Formula One car has been run in wet conditions in the dark.

Pirelli's to Focus on F1 at Autosport

Pirelli has announce plans to promote its recent return to Formula One (F1) sponsorship with an Autosport International stand showcasing the Italian tyre manufacturer’s historic and future involvement in Formula One.

According to the company, fans will be “thrilled by the two tier stand, which alongside F1 engineering masterpieces, will be displaying a host of other attractions and activities including a GT Cup car and the Pirelli simulator.” British Rally Championship Star Driver Elfyn Evans will also be in attendance with his rally car for the 2011 season, alongside the world famous Pirelli girls.

TMD Friction to Acquire bt Bremsen

TMD Friction Group has announced plans for the acquisition of bt Bremsen Technik. TMD Friction has been a minority shareholder of bt Bremsen since 2001. On 16 December Derek Whitworth, president and CEO of TMD Friction Group, Luxembourg, and Dieter Goldbach, managing director, bt bremsen Technik GmbH, Rosbach (Hessen, Germany) jointly announced TMD Friction’s acquisition of the remaining 51 per cent of bt Bremsen. The transaction also includes the business of bt Brake Technology of America, registered in Florida.

Changes to F1, GT1 Tyre Rules Confirmed

Proposed changes to Formula One and GT1 World Championship were confirmed at this year’s final meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WSMC), which took place in Monaco on December 10. The WSMC has approved the re-introduction of intermediate tyres into Formula One for 2011, along with the imposition of penalties upon any driver who fails to use both specification of dry weather tyre during a race. Changes for GT1 include an increase in the number of dry weather tyres to six sets (of which only four are permitted for qualifying and the races). The intention of this change is to allow teams to use tyres to their maximum capacity during practice, reducing the necessity to incur additional costs in private testing.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport is “Fastest Ever Series Produced Tyre”

French tyre giant Michelin has launched the company’s latest tyre for the ultra high-performance segment, the Pilot Super Sport, at an event in Dubai. Attending the launch alongside Michelin representatives were spokespeople from Porsche and TÜV SÜD; Michelin said it had “worked closely” alongside the auto manufacturer – as well as with BMW M and Ferrari – in developing the Pilot Super Sport, meeting its “challenging original equipment specifications”, while the testing organisation has recently produced a comparative study of the tyre and its competitors, determining it as “the fastest tyre on the market”. The Pilot Super Sport will be available from January 2011. The tyre will go on the market priced at the same level as its predecessor, the Pilot Sport 2, an important point of comparison considering the PS2’s more than 200 OE certifications. The Pilot Super Sport achieved a wet braking distance 3m shorter than its predecessor (80-10kmh) in TÜV SÜD tests.

Bridgestone Awarded ‘Bolster’ for F1 Technical Achievements

At this year’s Autosport Awards, held in London on December 5, Bridgestone became the recipient of a John Bolster Award in recognition of the company’s technical achievements in Formula One. The accolade, named after the original technical editor of Autosport magazine, was presented by Formula One World Championship winning team principal Christian Horner to Bridgestone’s director of Motorsport, Hiroshi Yasukawa.

Ecclestone Mugged Outside Formula One Building

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone was taken to hospital with a minor head injury following a mugging outside the Formula One Holdings building in Knightsbridge on the evening of November 24. Reports indicate that Ecclestone was attacked by four men who had been waiting for him as he arrived at the London address with his Brazilian girlfriend, Fabiana Flosi. The men punched at kicked Ecclestone repeatedly before taking off with jewellery valued at £200,000.

Pirelli Concludes First F1 Test, Next in Barhrain

Having brought its first Formula One tyre test to a satisfactory conclusion, Pirelli reports that its next private test will take place in Bahrain from 12 – 16 December. There will be another private test session in Europe during January, before all the teams reconvene at the beginning of February for the first official test.

Paul Hembery, Pirelli's motorsport director commented: "We've passed our first test with full marks. All the teams have done plenty of laps and everyone has worked very hard. We've focused on the development of the front tire and that has given us the most satisfaction. On Monday, we begin to analyze the data collected over the last two days"

Pirelli to Test Formula One Tyres in Abu Dhabi

Pirelli has announced that 12 teams will test out its new Formula One tyres on Friday and Saturday. Tyre spotters amongst you will notice the slick tyres in medium and soft compounds are distinguished by a coloured stripe on the sidewall. Each team will have eight sets of tyres available to them for the two days of testing

The test in the United Arab Emirates marks Pirelli’s return to F1 after a 19-year absence. The Italian tyre company has brought 384 tyres and 30 people to Abu Dhabi for its debut. Pirelli’s Formula One team concluded the first phase of testing, following eight private tests and 7000 kilometres on challenging circuits all over Europe.
