Toyo Tire US Launches 10 New Sizes

Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. brought 10 new passenger car and light truck tyre sizes to market. The new products, officially released in May, reportedly come in response to market demand. Toyo’s flagship ultra-high performance passenger car tire, the Proxes T1R, now comes in a 245/40Z R20 size for both replacement and so-called plus sizing. Then there are fitments designed for the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series, while domestic cars such as the Cadillac CTS and DTS as well as the Chevy Impala SS/LTZ all benefit from this size.

Racers, track drivers and hardcore performance enthusiasts get to select from a new 245/40Z R17 and a wide 315/35ZR17 Proxes R888 D.O.T. approved competition radial. The new 315-size is an ideal match with a 275/40ZR17 Proxes R888 for early Corvette ZR-1 and popular muscle car fitments.

Avon Tyre GT Takes Class Behind the Scenes

Engineers in the Avon Tyre Crew for the company-sponsored British GT Championship gave youngsters participating in the Young Engineers initiative the chance to glimpse their potential future careers.

The initiative is designed to encourage children to think about the importance of engineering and to develop an interest in the field to take through to higher education and beyond. Avon’s engineers showed the 19 11-year olds of All Saints Junior School in Hastings the ropes at the event at Thruxton race track on Sunday, June 29, which presented the ideal opportunity to promote this aspiration to the younger generation.

Dunlop India Acquires British Component Maker

Dunlop India has bought Schlegel Automotive, one of Britain’s largest auto component manufacturers. The company supplies rubber sealings to major car manufacturers, such as Ford, Toyota and BMW.

Dunlop India has been part of the Ruia Group for three years, when the corporation bought the tyre manufacturer’s ailing Indian operation.

Kumho Gets OE Deal from Ford

Its Solus KH16 radial in size 215/45R17 will be an OE tire on the 2009 Ford Focus. Kumho will be supplying some 200,000 of the tires to Ford in the deal.

“This contract is an important step for Kumho Tires; we now have supply contracts with all of the big three automakers in North America,” said Sae-chul Oh, president and CEO of Kumho Tire Inc. “These companies have recognized that Kumho Tires shares their commitment to quality, technology and performance. We will continue to expand our North American presence to become one of the top five global tire manufacturers by 2015.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Hunter Chosen as Ford’s US Aligner Supplier

The Ford Motor Company has chosen Hunter Engineering as its exclusive wheel alignment system supplier for Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the United States.

Hunter Engineering has maintained a strong partnership with Ford since joining the Rotunda equipment program in 1964 as the first supplier of alignment and balancing equipment. The relationship between the two companies has strengthened over the years, as Hunter’s product line has expanded to include tyre changers, brake lathes and inspection equipment, which are also approved for the Rotunda program.

Goodyear to Fit Tyres on 2009 Lincoln MKS, Ford Flex

Goodyear has been selected to provide the OE tyres for the new Lincoln MKS, a luxury sedan due to be placed in dealerships in summer this year. The tyre company adds Lincoln to the lengthy list of new North American vehicles shod with the company’s tyres.

The standard tyre for the 2009 MKS will be the Assurance ComforTred in size P235/55R18, though in addition the company will offer an optional 19-inch fitment of the Eagle RS-A in size P255/45R19.

Mustang GT500KR Fitted With Custom Goodyears

Goodyear has developed an ultra-performance rubber compound for their Eagle F1 Supercar tyre, which has won exclusive fitment rights on Ford’s new Mustang GT500KR. Carroll Shelby’s newly designed KR model will become the first production car to use the tyre in the US.

To mark out those tyres fitted on the Mustang, the Goodyear Wingfoot symbol will be emblazoned on the outboard sidewall in the tradition of the original customised appearance of the company’s Blue Dot HPs, which were fitted initially on the first-ever 1965 Shelby Mustang carrying, somewhat unsurprisingly, a blue dot.

Jury for Michelin Challenge Design Named

The 2009 judging panel for Michelin Challenge Design has been announced, and in July the panel will meet to select the vehicle designs and concepts that will make up the special exhibition at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The central theme for this year, the eighth in which the international competition has been held, is ‘Brave and Bold, America’s Next Iconic Vehicle’, and Michelin says that companies, studios, design teams and individual designers from more than 45 countries have submitted full-size vehicles, scale models and renderings. The designs will be evaluated, says Michelin, for uniqueness, emotional appeal, design courage and technical execution.

Michelin Sponsors Land Rover Monthly Billing Show

Michelin will be title sponsor of the LRM (Land Rover Monthly) Billing Show, which takes place at Billing Aquadrome, Northampton from 18 to 20 July. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of the iconic Land Rover brand; and follows the company’s recent purchase by India’s Tata Group from Ford.

An annual show for Land Rover enthusiasts, Billing provides the platform for Michelin to showcase its comprehensive 4×4 tyre range. This covers all market sectors from heavy duty off-road and multi purpose tyres, to high performance on-road tyres for vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.

Double Event for Kumho MSA British Rallycross at Pembrey

The Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship moves to Pembrey in South Wales on May 3 and 4 for a crucial double-header that forms the second and third rounds of the championship. Title holder Ollie O’Donovan won the first round of the championship and holds a three-point lead at the head of the championship tables entering rounds two and three. Last year proved to be a bogey track for O’Donovan, technical problems costing him places in both of the championship’s visits to the fast Welsh track.

“I think I had quite an easy run in the first round but I’m not expecting it to be like that at Pembrey as there’s a long run from the start to the first corner and that doesn’t really suit my car as much as some others,” said O’Donovan, who added that his plan is to race hard right from the start. “I think everyone will be conscious that there’s a need to get the cars through two full days, but I’d rather go for it right from the start and take my win on Saturday than hang back and take a place and then perhaps miss out on Sunday too. The two drivers I’d be most concerned about are Steve Hill and Liam Doran, but I’ll take each day as it comes.”

World’s Fastest Production Car Takes Record on Michelin Tyres

Shelby SuperCars’ Ultimate Aero, fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tyres, has set a new record of 256.18mph. This, according to Michelin, meant the “Ultimate Aero” is set to be officially recognised as the world’s fastest production car. The SSC Ultimate Aero was clocked at 15mph quicker than the previous titleholder, the Koenigsegg CCR and quicker than the Bugatti Veyron’s unofficial speed claim of 252.55mph. This is the first time that an American manufacturer has held this world title since the iconic Ford GT40 way back in 1967.

Michelin has been the tyre technical partner of Shelby SuperCars since the project was founded by Jerod Shelby seven years ago and has contributed technical advice on suspension design and set up for the Ultimate Aero. The Pilot Sport PS2 tyres fitted for the trial had to withstand speeds up to 257mph on the closed undulating country roads used for the test in Washington State – apparently with little to no wear.

Kumho 18-inch Nemesis Tyres Complete Maiden Rally Raid

Kumho’s new 18-inch rally raid tyre has completed its maiden event, with all four of the Bowler Nemesis 4x4s the company supplied completing the Baja Italia event. The Nemesis, a specialist V8-powered rally raid 4×4, had been due to make its debut on the Lisbon-Dakar Rally earlier this year, but the event was cancelled at the last minute, due to terrorist threats.

Four such Bowlers were entered for the Baja Italia (14-16 March), a rally centered around the dried river beds above Venice. These included the Kumho-liveried vehicle of Richard Hayward and Alex Cole; the second British entry of Greg Macleod and Oliver Ford; the French entry of Thierry Charbonnier and Quin Evans and the Belgian one of Joost Van Cauwenberge and Marc Devos.

Tata Raises $3 billion to Buy Jaguar and Land Rover

Tata Motors is a step closer to buying Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford, having raised a reported $3 billion dollars in order to finance the deal. As a result of raising the cash, the transaction is now expected to close next week, according to the Financial Times. According to the newspaper, the financing is considerably above the earlier predicted purchase price for the two UK car marques, which was estimated at about $2 billion.
