The Who Play Bridgestone Halftime Show at Super Bowl XLIV

One of Britain’s oldest surviving (well, at least half of them) rock bands, The Who played the Bridgestone-sponsored halftime show at American Football’s biggest event yesterday. The 10-minute slot has been filled by single bands best described as classic since the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” of 2004’s Super Bowl XXXVIII. Bridgestone has sponsored the show for the past three years, which have featured Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and now The Who’s Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Coverage of the show can be seen below in the embedded video. Before and after the big event, an American Football match broke out, the much-loved New Orleans Saints beating the more fancied Indianapolis Colts 31-17. Bridgestone also displayed its latest adverts amidst the action on the television coverage.

Nokian Gets Behind Snow Soccer

Nokian Tyres’ dedication to grip in the snow goes beyond its tyre products, as was witnessed at the Nokian Tyres Snow Soccer World Championships in Finland on 6 – 7 February 2010. The sporting event, which Nokian describes as “very crazy, but so cheerful”, involves 1,000 players and 70 teams competing on a playing surface covered by 50 centimetres of snow. This new snow sport, adds the Finnish tyre maker, is extreme fun: exhausting, difficult and adventurous, and the players with the most grip and skill will prove to be the winners.

Conti to Boost Junior Staff Numbers in 2010

Just days after announcing plans to use football as a means of highlighting its attractiveness as an employer, Continental has outlined plans to “put stock in fresh expertise, new ideas and, thus, increasing innovative prowess in the form of highly qualified junior staff” during 2010. “This year we plan to hire around 1,000 university graduates and young professionals worldwide,” reported Continental Executive Board member Heinz-Gerhard Wente. A quarter of these new recruits will be employed in Germany, he added. The automotive supplier says that while it will primarily focus upon hiring engineering and natural science majors, it is also looking for business and economics graduates.

Conti Attempts to Score ‘Goal of the Season’ With Prospective New Talent

Continental wants to spread word of its attractiveness to potential employees, and in its German home market the tyre and automotive technology supplier is using the beautiful game to meet this end. It has brought a programme called “Kick it with Continental” into play, and as part of this invited some 400 German students to a day focusing on the upcoming Conti-sponsored World Cup in South Africa. On the agenda, among other things, are presentations, contests and panel discussions with German football personalities Karl-Heinz Körbel, Mirko Slomka and Thomas Schneider.

Grouptyre Lays Out 2010 plans at Annual Meeting

The Maxxis brand’s exclusive UK distributor, independent tyre wholesaler Grouptyre, discussed its plans for 2010 at its annual sales conference in Liverpool on December 9 and 10. On the first day of the conference sales director Paul Hollows took business development managers and sales managers from the 13 member companies through a review of Grouptyre’s achievements in 2009 and announced the programme of sales and marketing initiatives for 2010. The day’s proceedings also included a brand presentation from Maxxis International UK managing director Derek McMartin and a series of interactive working groups.

Michelin Releases Switzerland 2010 Guide

Michelin recently launched its centennial guide to Germany, and now it is the turn of neighbour Switzerland to receive its 2010 list of fine dining establishments. The latest guide, which goes on sale on November 19 in Switzerland and shortly afterwards elsewhere, provides information on 867 hotels and 695 restaurants across all comfort and price categories within its 520 pages.

Conti Kicks Off World Cup Contest

To liven up the journey along the road to next year’s football world cup, sponsor Continental AG has launched a new contest on its www.contisoccerworld.co.uk football website. The ‘ContiFanContest’, which can be tackled in any of four languages, is a video contest in which six of eight tasks on offer must be completed. The main prize for all qualifying participants is one of 11 sets of three day all-inclusive trips for two to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, including flights, hotel accommodation, a safari and tickets for a match in Johannesburg. The ContiFanContest will close on 04 December 2009, the date on which the groups will be drawn in South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Hamburg SV to Receive Maxxis Sponsorship

Michelin Publishes Rio Green Guide

Renault Handed F1 Suspended Expulsion

Renault’s Formula One team has been given a suspended ban from the sport for its role in the race-fixing scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix in 2008. The team’s former head, Flavio Briatore has been banned from all FIA-sanctioned events indefinitely, while Pat Symonds, the former engineering director also implicated by ex-driver Nelson Piquet Jr., was handed a five-year exclusion. Piquet has avoided censure as a result of his whistle-blowing activity, while Fernando Alonso, Renault’s lead driver who won the race in question largely thanks to the ersatz accident, was cleared of any involvement and thanked by the FIA for “cooperating with enquiries”.

Maxxis Uses Anfield Link to Reward Major Customers

Maxxis reports that it is working hard to synergise its sponsorship and advertising links with Premier League football clubs and its major fleet business customers, treating the latter to VIP hospitality with the former. Four Maxxis customers enjoyed a Yossi Benayoun hat-trick – his third in two years – courtesy of the manufacturer, when Liverpool beat Burnley 4-0 at Anfield on 12 September.
