Solus Masterlease Agreement For Kwik-Fit Fleet

Effective 1st January, Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a solus multi-million pound contract to supply a range of fast-fit services, including tyre repair, replacement and management, to Masterlease. The previous fast-fit agreement was with a number of suppliers, including Kwik-Fit Fleet.

Masterlease is one of the UK’s largest leasing and fleet management specialists with more than 100,000 cars and vans on its books and the company will benefit from Kwik-Fit Fleet’s new web-based ‘intelligent’ tyre management authorisation and reporting system, which is being rolled out to Britain’s biggest fleet operators.

Goodyear Fuel Max Joins “Nifty Fifty”

Goodyear’s Fuel Max fuel-efficiency commercial tyre technology, has earned a “Nifty Fifty Award” for best new products in 2007. US Heavy Duty Trucking magazine selected Fuel Max Technology for its “Nifty Fifty Award”, one of 50 new products selected on its “usefulness to the truck operator in terms of innovation, serviceability and performance.” The technology utilizes innovative treads, along with advanced compounds and manufacturing technologies, to help optimize fuel economy while maintaining a low cost-per-mile for fleets and owner-operators.

Bandag Releases Updated Aspects Software

Bandag EMEA first launched its Aspects fleet inspection program at Reifen Essen 2006. Since then a growing number of Bandag Dealers and Eurofleet partners have begun using Aspects to demonstrate potential savings on fleets’ tyre budgets. Based upon input from these initial users a new version of Aspects is now available.

Major improvements in the areas of technological development and user friendliness have been made in relation to reporting and data integrity, states Bandag, who claims Aspects provides clear reporting on all aspects of tyre maintenance and fleet tyre policy implementation, as well as indicating the best opportunities for savings on a fleet’s total tyre budget. Using the program’s Out of Service Tyre Analysis module, the root causes of eventual tyre damage and reasons for pulling tyres prematurely can be analysed and reported.

SKF Presents PSI Compatible Hubcaps

SKF recently added four new PSI compatible hubcaps to its premium wheel-end Scotseal product offering. The new hubcaps are compatible with the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) by Pressure Systems Incorporated (PSI), an automatic tyre inflation system (ATIS). MTIS uses compressed air from a trailer’s air system to inflate any tyre that falls below a specified pre-set pressure. The system ultimately increases tyre life, fuel efficiency and safety, its maker says.

“The new PSI compatible SKF hubcaps provide fleets with a reliable and safe option to maintain wheel end systems during over-the-road operation,” says Leslie Kern, Senior Product Manager, Heavy Duty Market, SKF. “These new hubcaps complement our superior line of Scotseal products, including the Scotseal PlusXL wheel seal.”

Dave Alsop Joins Vacu-Lug as Fleet Sales Director

Vacu-Lug has appointed Dave Alsop as its new Fleet Sales Director. Alsop has spent the majority of his career in the truck industry including 10 years in the contracts division of Scania (GB) Ltd. He has also worked for the RAC and latterly at Euro Auctions UK Ltd where he was involved in the sales of truck, trailer and heavy earth moving equipment. “I am really looking forward to joining the team at Vacu-Lug and growing their extensive Fleet Business” he said “The wide range and type of fleets they manage gives us a great advantage in the market.”

Canadian Retreader Goes With MRT

(Akron/Tire Review) Brampton, Ontario’s Tiremaster Ltd. has switched from the Bandag retreading process to Michelin Retreading Technologies’ process. “As we look toward the future, we’re confident that Michelin’s technology, quality and cradle-to-grave approach is the best solution for our customers – particularly the large national fleets,” said Tiremaster President Ron Cherry. “After decades in the retreading business, I’m sold on the MRT process supported by Michelin service.”

ING Renault F1 Switches Support Fleet to Bridgestone

ING Renault F1 Team, 2005 and 2006 world champions, have converted their entire fleet to Bridgestone tyres. This means the Warwickshire-based tyre giants will now supply tyres for not only the team’s Formula 1 cars but also all the team’s support vehicles. Last season, Bridgestone supplied a number of F1 teams with tyres but this year saw the remaining teams also transfer to Bridgestone. As a result many team support vehicles are now following suit, converting to Bridgestone tyres from other leading brands.

Truck Point dealer Tructyre fitted over 300 new tyres to the Renault F1 Team fleet mainly utilising Bridgestone’s latest generation of highway tyres encompassing the R249 steer-axle, M749 drive-axle and R168 trailer-axle. Tructyre was recently awarded Expert Level recognition by Bridgestone UK for their high levels of customer service and administration to fleets.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Expands its Service to Include Glass Repair

Kwik-Fit Fleet has rolled a new vehicle windscreen repair service. Kwik-Fit centres across the UK are now able to repair vehicle windscreens by injecting a liquid acrylic resin into the damaged glass. The resin is cured by the use of long wave ultra violet light. The call-in service, which by the end of 2007 will be available at all 670 Kwik-Fit outlets, sees Britain’s largest independent fast-fit giant on target to win a significant slice of the windscreen repair sector.

The glass repair market is presently dominated by just a handful of players and is estimated to be worth £310 million a year with the average value of each of the approximate 2.8 million jobs being £121. The windscreen repair sector is estimated to account for 25-30 per cent of work and is estimated to be worth around £38 million with the average cost of each job being £50.

Repairs at Kwik-Fit centres will typically take 20-30 minutes. While the majority of the repairs are via insurance companies, fleets account for about 15 per cent of work.

Offering a ‘Complete Tyre Solution’

Aftermarket TPMS provider Advantage PressurePro and Inovex Industries, manufacturer of the Ride-On Tire Protection System brand of high-speed tyre sealants, have announced the formation of a strategic partnership to provide customers with what they believe to be a complete solution for tyre pressure problems. PressurePro TPMS works together with Ride-On tyre sealant to both alert drivers and dramatically reduce the damage and hassle caused by unexpected air loss in tyres, whether due to punctures or tyre porosity – the number one cause of breakdowns, according to the US Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“This joint marketing relationship just makes sense”, says Mark Farkhan, president of Inovex. “PressurePro and Ride-On share the same goals of safety, asset protection and environmental protection.” Ride-On can reportedly seal 85 to 95 per cent of punctures from objects up to a quarter of an inch in diameter that penetrate the tyre’s crown area. Tyre sealants, however, can’t seal all punctures, nor can Ride-On notify motorists of low tyre pressure. This is where PressurePro steps in; to immediately notify customers of decreased air pressure in such instances.

VancoWinter 2 Launched in the UK

Continental Tyre Group is pleased to announce the launch of its latest cold weather van tyre to be sold on the UK market – the VancoWinter 2. Available from October, VancoWinter 2 features an advanced sipe concept meaning the sipes spread when braking. This creates an ice scraper effect on the road surface allowing shorter braking distances on winter roads. Open shoulders on the tyre with wide lateral grooves give excellent water drainage leading to a high level of protection against aquaplaning on wet roads.

The VancoWinter 2’s optimum tyre footprint coupled with a unique cold weather compound gives the VancoWinter 2 as much as 30 per cent extra mileage potential in the winter months compared to a conventional van tyre. According to a Continental statement heralding the release, the winter tyre market is becoming “increasingly important for van drivers and fleets who realise the safety benefits of fitting cold weather tyres to work vehicles.”

Continental’s van OE approval success continues with the VancoWinter 2 approved by Mercedes for the popular Sprinter van and the Iveco Daily. Currently one in three vans leaves a European factory on Continental tyres.

Keep on Trucking Through Winter

This October will see Continental’s latest cold weather tyre for light commercial vehicles, the VancoWinter 2, arriving this side of the Channel and released onto a market that is increasingly becoming important to van drivers and fleets who realise the safety benefits of fitting cold weather tyres to work vehicles.

Already approved as OE for the popular Mercedes Sprinter van and the Iveco Daily, the VancoWinter 2 continues Continental’s success in the area of OE van tyre supply. According to Conti one in three vans leaves a European factory running on Continental tyres, confirming the German manufacturer’s strong OE position.

Michelin Rolls Out Regenerating Drive Tyre

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North American introduced the XDA5 drive position radial, which it said has a tread design that will “regenerate” itself during use, and will “outlast the drive tyre it replaces by at least 30 per cent.”

Michelin said the tread pattern of the XDA5 is molded in three dimensions, and as the tyre wears, the tread reveals new grooves and tread blocks.

“This regenerating tread design keeps the tyre in service longer before retreading, an impressive 30 per cent improvement in tread life over other drive tyres that are commercially available,” the company said. “That translates into improved safety and lower costs for fleets and owner operators across North America.”

The tyre’s “double-wave matrix” sipes give the tyre’s 30/32-inch tread blocks the ability to lock together in all directions, Michelin said, for rigidity, resistance to scrub and minimised irregular wear.

Maxxis Fleet Tests Continue

Maxxis is continuing to put its 22.5 inch truck tyres through a rigorous testing programme, working with a number of leading UK fleets to establish performance and PPK (pence per kilometre) figures and casing value. “We’re another year down the line with our road tests and the results to date have been extremely positive, exceeding our expectations in a number of areas,” says Maxxis International UK’s managing director Derek McMartin.

“When we launch the full range, Maxxis truck tyres will compare favourably with the current market leaders by offering operators quality, reliability and value for money, and we should be able to report more in the not too distant future.”

The Maxxis range of 22.5 inch tyres is available in steer, drive and trailer applications in sizes 10R22.5, 11R22.5, 12R22.5, 275/80R22.5, 295/80R22.5, 315/80R22.5 and 385/65R22.5.

Conti Truck Tyres Get EPA Nod

(Akron/Tire Review) Three Continental brand medium truck tyres have been recognised by the Environmental Protection Agency for meeting its SmartWay environmental specifications. The Conti HSL (steer), HDL Eco Plus (drive), and HTL (all position/trailer) were noted for meeting specific performance requirements including environmental design and fuel consumption performance.

“As one of only four tyre manufacturers being recognised by the EPA for meeting the requirements for the SmartWay Tractor-Trailer equipment specifications, Continental Tire North America is especially proud of this achievement,” said Clif Armstrong, CTNA’s director of commercial marketing. “This honour validates our work in developing quality products that continue to meet the needs of today’s fuel conscious fleets.”

Kwik-Fit Fleet Launches ‘Intelligent’ Online Tyre Management

Kwik-Fit Fleet has launched a new web-based ‘intelligent’ tyre management authorisation and reporting system, which is being rolled out to Britain’s biggest fleet operators. About 50 companies managing more 1.3 million vehicles, including Britain’s largest fleet, Motability Operations which runs around 450,000 vehicles, and the country’s largest contract hire business, Lex which has a fleet of almost 270,000 vehicles, will benefit from the technology.

For the past decade Kwik-Fit Fleet’s tyre management programme has been utilised by some of Britain’s biggest outright purchase fleets and leasing companies to control their tyre maintenance spend. Details of all transactions are logged and information on tread depths of tyres removed, brands and size of tyres fitted, mileage of vehicle at time of replacement and the reason for tyre replacement are all captured by Kwik Fit on behalf of customers.
