First Stop appoints Bentley as retail business consultant

First Stop has appointed Nic Bentley as its new retail business consultant. Bentley promises the national network will back “entrepreneurial” independent garages. He arrives in the role having gained an understanding of First Stop through his time as a key account manager at Euro Car Parts, where he built up a partnership between the two companies. Bentley has more than 20 years’ experience in the automotive industry, following additional roles with Unipart and also Castrol.

Hickleys in Taunton joins First Stop tyre retail network

First Stop has added a new outlet in Taunton, as automotive equipment supplier Hickleys joins the fast fit network. After growing to a total of 72 centres by the end of 2016, First Stop is continuing to evolve and expand via a new approach to recruitment. First Stop’s retail business consultant Ollie Turpie is targeting businesses not currently boasting a tyre retail arm. Hickleys, based in Castle Street, offers a broad range of automotive solutions, from diagnostic equipment right through to heating and air conditioning installations.

Bridgestone, First Stop survey 2,400 cars with Sigmavision TreadReader

Sigmavision has announced the findings of a recent survey conducted in collaboration with Bridgestone and First Stop at the recent Sky Sports British Masters golf event. The company’s technicians surveyed 2,400 cars over two days away from the fairways and greens at The Grove, measuring tyre tread depths with Sigmavision’s TreadReader handheld scanners. The results of the survey back up Bridgestone’s hypothesis that motorists currently do not make the regular checks necessary to ensure their tyres are safe.

First Stop’s ExxonMobil partnership makes network ‘Mobil 1 workshops’

First Stop has agreed a new association with synthetic motor oil brand ExxonMobil, which will position its network of independent garages as ‘Mobil 1 workshops’. This agreement will entitle First Stop branches to high profile sales promotions. A dedicated account manager will work with First Stop garages, aiming to help improve customer retention and the generation of new business through brand ambassadorship.

Another change for First Stop in Germany

A week ago we reported Bridgestone’s plan to roll its First Stop tyre retail operation in Germany into a joint venture, with a 75 per cent share in this operation to be acquired by independent retailer Pneuhage. News of this pending ownership restructure has been accompanied by a change in leadership of the national First Stop network, however the two events are not related. Frank Fuhrmann, who held the post of managing director for First Stop in the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland since 1 September 2015, has been succeeded in this role by Daniel Giroud, Bridgestone Europe’s vice-president of retail operations.

First Stop tyre retail network to become a JV in Germany

Just over a month after sharing details of growth plans for its First Stop network in the UK, Bridgestone has announced a major change in its German First Stop network. Pending approval from the relevant authorities, Pneuhage, one of the country’s largest independent tyre retailers, will acquire a 75 per cent share in a joint venture with Bridgestone Deutschland. The intention is for First Stop in Germany and its subsidiaries – retail outlets, retreading operation and partner network – to be operated by this joint venture.

First Stop ‘accelerating’ expansion plans

The First Stop fast fit network states that it is accelerating its expansion plans across the UK. Currently operating 72 centres, the network said that it has recently attracted six new members. The network has also become an official supporter of TyreSafe. First Stop’s partner zone manager, Mike Glover said: “First Stop prides itself on outstanding customer service and we consider explaining the importance of tyre safety as an essential part of that relationship.

TyreSafe announces First Stop as an official supporter

The First Stop tyre service network has signed up as an official supporter of TyreSafe. Commenting on the decision to lend its support to the tyre safety organisation, First Stop partner zone manager Mike Glover said: “By becoming an official supporter TyreSafe, we can now accelerate our safety awareness among those customers through the use of the organisation’s extensive library of materials and assets.”

Uttenweiler steps down as First Stop regional MD

Bridgestone Europe reports the departure of the managing director of its First Stop business in the German-speaking ‘DACH’ markets and Eastern Europe, Dr. Urban Uttenweiler. According to a statement released by Bridgestone, Uttenweiler has “decided to take on a new role outside the Bridgestone organisation.”

First Stop has acquired the services of a new retail business consultant from the fast fit industry. A former retail business manager, and Blackcircles.com area network manager, Dave Hull will play a key role in the company’s attempts to expand, while also stimulating sales from existing First Stop partners, the network stated.

First Stop accepted by Foxy Lady’s female friendly Tyre Services Register

First Stop’s 76 branches will join a list of female-friendly garages, accident repairers and car dealers when it is accepted onto the Foxy Lady Approved Tyre Services Register. The Register identifies businesses that meet the female drivers club’s quality standards. Each member of the list has signed a Foxy Lady Promise to “never overcharge, patronise or sell women services they don’t need.” The new tyre-based register, “monitored by regular female feedback” like Foxy Lady’s other automotive industry registers, was started to build upon the club’s TyreSafe Online and Social Media Award in 2014, which recognised its work in promoting tyre safety using its Twitter and Facebook pages. The club is also a TyreSafe member.

One of First Stop’s most valued garages has gone the extra mile for the local community, courtesy of a new emergency 4×4 vehicle worth £30,000. Risboro Garage, based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire has donated a Honda CRV 4×4 for the Risborough Community First Responders (CFR) team following months of fundraising.

First Stop network set to triple in size

Bridgestone’s First Stop network is currently made up of 53 independent member partners, an increase of around 14 in the last 14 months. When you consider that there are a further 16 Kingsway-branded Bridgestone equity-owned branches, this brings the total to 69 and together these two facts suggest that First Stop is currently enjoying a period of growth. Put this figure in the context of the last five years, which weren’t always plain sailing for the retail chain, and you could even describe this growth as a resurgence. With this in mind, Tyres & Accessories spoke with Bridgestone Europe retail business development manager Stuart Eagland.

First Stop renovations begin with Halesowen facelift

UK fast fit network First Stop has begun its 2015 investment programme with a facelift for its Halesowen centre. The 52 centre network has announced new locations and significant investment expected this year, with the re-launched, new-look garage on Overend Road the first to benefit from substantial investment. The centre boasts improved branding and equipment as a result of the renovation, with three other members – Horndean Tyres, Ashton Tyres & Exhausts and Thorntons Tyres – joining Halesowen in the early stages of the planned investment.

21 German First Stop outlets threatened with closure

The First Stop network began with the opening of two service centres in the UK in 1994, and over the following two decades grew into a pan-European retail chain boasting almost 2,000 outlets in 25 countries. On its website, First Stop says this “success story continues”, however in one market the network’s presence may soon suffer a hefty setback. Our German sister magazine Neue Reifenzeitung reports that First Stop has commenced a restructuring and consolidation programme in Germany, and in a worst case scenario this could lead to the closure of up to 21 Bridgestone-owned First Stop centres in the country – out of a total of 64 – before the end of this year. This potential slashing of numbers follows the closure of five outlets in 2013. Neue Reifenzeitung notes that at present no concrete plans regarding branch closures have been announced, and it is not yet clear which 21 of the 64 outlets are threatened.
