Bridgestone Integrates American Consumer Tyre Management Structure

A number of changes have been made to the Consumer Tire business management structure at Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO), making it more akin to the structure already in place at the tyre maker’s commercial tyre business. In announcing the restructuring, Bridgestone Americas refers to the new management model as “fully integrated” and one that will “facilitate continued growth and make the business even more customer-focused.”

Bridgestone Remains Tight Lipped on Firestone IndyCar Plans

In light of rumours regarding Firestone’s departure from motorsport, Bridgestone Americas has released a statement explaining its position, yet the tyre maker’s official words clarify little. Speculation that Bridgestone will dump the IndyCar Series after the 2011 season has existed after it failed to renew its tyre supply contract before the December 31 deadline.

Bridgestone Americas Announces Promotions

Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) has announced two senior personnel changes: Stephen Brooks, formerly president, US, Canada and Monterrey Manufacturing Group (BAMG), has been appointed to the newly created position of chief information officer, BSAM. Barrett “Barry” Owens, formerly executive director, Process Engineering Development, will assume Brooks’ responsibilities and has been promoted to the position of vice president, Manufacturing, BAMG.

Bridgestone Ends Dayton Truck Tyres

Tire Review reports that Bridgestone Americas' Dayton brand medium truck tyres are no more. The manufacturer announced yesterday that it would discontinue sales of Dayton brand medium truck radials as of 1 January, 2011. The tyre-maker said it anticipates it will burn off its remaining Dayton inventory by the end of this year, but did not say when it stopped production of the tyres. The move, Bridgestone Americas said, does not impact production and sales of its Dayton branded passenger and light truck/SUV lines.

Bridgestone Bandag Re-Launches US Fleet Solutions Website

The trucktires.com website operated by Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions (BBTS) in the US is being re-launched, and in addition to providing solutions and advice to help fleet customers increase tyre life and increase cost per mile the site also serves as a portal to the local Bridgestone, Bandag, Firestone and Dayton websites. BBTS comments that, via this portal, visitors will be able to find precisely the right tyre and retread products, locate the nearest dealer and access emergency road service.

South African Tyre Employees Returning to Work

Strike action at Apollo, Continental and Goodyear’s factories in South Africa has ended and workers are scheduled to resume work on September 30. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says the month-long strike, which arose following stalled negotiations with New Tyre Manufacturing Industry Employers' Association, has been resolved following the decision to revise pay structures for tyre industry workers.

Firestone Performer Agri Range Extended to 70 Series

The 70 series is the second largest segment in the European agricultural radial tyre market and demand has grown steadily over the last decade. Firestone Europe has catered to this increasing demand with a new addition to its Performer line-up, the Performer 70 radial for medium to high-horsepower tractors in general farming applications. Compared to the R6000 and R8000 tyres it replaces, Firestone says the Performer 70 provides vehicles with more traction, longer tread life and a higher road-speed capability. The launch follows Firestone’s introduction of the standard series Performer 85 in 2009.

South African Tyre Workers March Against ‘Captains of Industry’

Strife within the South African tyre industry continues with an estimated 4,000 workers expected to attend a protest march on September 20. NUMSA, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, has planned for the disgruntled employees to assemble at Jarhaman Hall in Korsten, Port Elizabeth to, as spokesman Mphumzi Maqungo explains, “hand over a memorandum of demands to tyre manufacturers' ruling oligarchy." According to Maqungo, the “throng” of workers anticipated to take part in the protest include those working for “imperialist owned Firestone, Continental and Goodyear.”

Long Service Celebration for BITS Employees

Two members of BITS are celebrating after being presented with specially engraved watches to celebrate over 25 years of service with the company. Paul Williams (left) was previously with Firestone and is now a sales manager covering the North East and Wales. Andy Lawson (right) joined the BITS team as an office junior and has risen to his present position as manager of the busy Burton centre. These long service presentations are regular features for the BITS team recognising a unique record of industry leading technical advice and customer service.

Bridgestone Partners to Improve Indonesia Rubber Production

Bridgestone Corp. is partnering with the World Agroforestry Centre in a program to help small rubber tree growers Indonesia. The partnership will provide growers with information and guidance on best practices in the cultivation of rubber trees. The parties will also conduct joint research intended to help stabilize the region's agricultural rubber industry into the future.

“Major Upgrade” Made to Firestone’s Winter Tyre Portfolio

Bridgestone is referring to the launch of the Firestone Winterhawk 2 EVO and Winterhawk 2V EVO tyre ranges as the completion of “major upgrade” to the brand’s winter tyre line-up. According to the manufacturer, the two new tyres incorporate the latest winter technological developments with EVO compound, a combination that reportedly enables it to set “new benchmarks in the standard segment”. Bridgestone states that the two Winterhawk products deliver best-in-class performance on wet, snow and dry.

Bridgestone Aims to Boost Footfall/Incentivise Dealers with Promotions

Bridgestone is rewarding dealers in its First Stop network with a unique driving experience. Throughout the second quarter of this year, the top-performing dealers will have the chance to win a Silverstone driving day this October. There are 12 days up for grabs: half going to dealers with multiple locations and half going to single locations. Points will be awarded for the number of Bridgestone, Firestone and Dayton tyres each dealer purchases, and they’ll receive regular updates to see if they’re racing ahead of the pack.

Dan Woodward, First Stop retail marketing analyst said: “We want to motivate First Stop staff with the best rewards possible. This is a fantastic opportunity to take some of the world’s highest performing cars around a legendary circuit.” The First Stop winners will be able to choose from a selection of highly desirable cars; such as the Lotus Exige S, the Ferrari 360 F1 Modena and the Caterham 7. In addition, the range features a number of cars that are new at Silverstone for 2010; including the Audi R8 and TT, plus the Porsche GT2 and GT3.

Firestone Natural Rubber Participates in Surgical Mission

Liberia based Firestone Natural Rubber Company (FSNR) recently worked with a team from Children’s Surgery International to provide 142 free operations on underprivileged youths at the company’s Firestone Medical Center in Duside. The 300 bed hospital, reopened in December 2008 after being destroyed during Liberia’s civil war, provides free health care to Firestone Natural Rubber employees and their families plus health services to the wider community.
