Bridgestone names US OTR plant project leader

The new OTR factory Bridgestone plans to build in the US will ultimately create around 550 jobs – the first of these has already been announced. Steve Brooks, previously vice-president of Information at Bridgestone Americas, has been named chief project officer for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. This new position was created specifically for leading the new plant’s construction and start-up. Brooks’ former position has been filled by Diane E. Drum, who before joining Bridgestone was president and chief information officer at Gerdau Ameristeel.

Two senior Bridgestone appointments announced

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) has announced two key appointments, both of which take effect immediately. Saul Solomon, previously president of BATO’s US & Canada Commercial Tire Sales division, has been named president of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, Latin American Tire Division (BATO LA). Solomon succeeds Humberto Gomez, who announced his retirement from BATO LA last July. Ken Weaver, formerly chief financial officer of Bridgestone Americas, has succeeded Solomon as president of US & Canada Commercial Tire Sales at BATO.

Bridgestone says lawsuit against employee’s “appalling” action is “without merit”

US publication Tire Review says Bridgestone Americas has referred to the actions of one of its former employees, which resulted in a homeless man suffering significant injuries, as “appalling and senseless. The 64-year-old homeless man, Ruben Sandoval, suffered third-degree burns on his arms and face on January 2, 2010, when a service technician working at a Firestone Complete Auto Care store in California tried to scare the man away by dousing his shopping trolley with petrol and setting it on fire.

Bridgestone announces US promotions

Bridgestone Americas has announced two senior promotions within its operations, effective immediately. Jim Pridgen, previously plant manager at the Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) factory in Wilson, North Carolina, has been named president of Firestone Fibers & Textiles Company, LLC (FSFT). In this new role Pridgen will be based at FSFT’s headquarters in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Gary Williamson, formerly operations manager at the BATO facility in Aiken County, South Carolina, has been promoted to the position of plant manager at the Wilson facility. Bridgestone Americas will announce Williamson’s successor as operations manager at a later date.

MasterFit introduces tyre price matching policy

To encourage repeat business at its franchised dealers, Vauxhall has pledged to match the best price on a large selection of the tyres offered through its more than 400 MasterFit retailers throughout the UK. Under what it calls its Tyre Price Promise, the network will price match Continental, Pirelli, Dunlop, Michelin and Firestone brand tyres sold within a five mile radius of its outlets.

Firestone OE for Chrysler 300

The all-new Chrysler flagship, the 2011 Chrysler 300, is now on sale in the US, and UK sales are tipped to start in spring 2012. The 300 is shipped in four model specifications – Touring, Limited, 300C and 300C AWD – and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations reports its Firestone-brand FR710 tyre has been selected as standard original equipment on the more upmarket Limited and 300C versions. Another Firestone tyre, the Firehawk GT, will be optional original equipment for the same models.

Firestone OE for US Fiat 500

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has announced another original equipment deal for its Firestone brand. The manufacturer will supply Firehawk GT all-season tyres in size 185/55R15 82H to certain Fiat 500 models. In announcing the tyre’s OE supply, Bridgestone comments that the Firestone Firehawk GT is sport-performance tyre engineered to provide a blend of sporty handling while also offering practical all-season traction capability in many different driving conditions.

Bridgestone’s van tyre line-up: Lightening the load

Key requirements of van tyre users are durability, economy and good performance, particularly in the wet. Bridgestone aims to meet these with its van tyre range. The tyre maker notes that long distances frequently come with the territory for the average commercial van driver, and for businesses and individuals who are often on the road, going the distance with long-haul journeys, it recommends the Duravis R410. This is, Bridgestone comments, a durable, high mileage tyre, designed for withstanding heavy use and daily deliveries at highway speeds.

Chrysler OE for Firestone Firehawk GT Pursuit

Bridgestone Americas reports the selection of the Firestone Firehawk GT Pursuit tyre as an original equipment fitment for the ready-for-duty 2011 Dodge Charger Pursuit. The Firehawk GT Pursuit is specifically designed for law enforcement use and is said to combine wet and dry handling with an emphasis on quick steering response. It will be fitted to the Dodge Charger Pursuit in size P225/60R18W.

Goodyear re-elects 12 directors to board at 2011 annual meeting

Shareholders of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have re-elected 12 members of the company’s board of directors including chairman, president and CEO Richard J Kramer (full list below). The company also officially appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers as the company’s independent registered public accounting firm for 2011, having had the action ratified by shareholders.

Firestone brand launches new European website for tyre end users

Bridgestone has announced the launch of a new European website for the Firestone brand. The website hopes to attract the attention of end users with improved navigation and imagery to reflect the desired brand image for Firestone. “We designed this new Firestone website from the consumer point of view” says Jean-François Callier, trade marketing, Bridgestone Europe. “The content reflects what motorists want to find on a site and we provided the structure and flow to make their search as easy as possible.”

Firestone to continue with IndyCar until end of 2013

Following Bridgestone Americas’ announcement that its Firestone brand would exit the IndyCar series at the end of the 2011 season, race teams met and confirmed their resolve to remain loyal to Firestone and seek a means of retaining the tyre maker’s involvement. This determination has paid off – Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations and IndyCar have announced that Firestone will continue to serve as the sole tire supplier to the IZOD IndyCar Series through the 2013 race season.

IndyCar teams to Bridgestone: We don’t want to lose “best partner ever”

US publication Tire Review reports IndyCar teams are petitioning Bridgestone Americas to reconsider its position with the race series. Following the tyre maker’s March 4 announcement that its sponsorship and Firestone brand tyre supply contract would not be renewed after 2011, a “near-unanimous” vote is said to have been taken amongst teams to “stick with Firestone – regardless of the price.”

Firestone brand to exit Indycar

The Indycar series is held in equal high esteem by US motor racing aficionados as Formula One is in other parts of the world, and as has been the case for the Bernie Ecclestone run championship, vehicles racing in Indycar have been fitted with tyres produced by Bridgestone companies for a good number of years. But the similarities do not end there; more than a year after the withdrawal from Formula one was announced, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) stated it has “mutually agreed” with Indycar to end the sponsorship and supply contract for its Firestone brand – a partnership it describes as “one of the most successful in all of motorsports” – at the end of the 2011 season.

Firestone OE on new Dodge muscle models

The 2011 versions of two iconic US muscle car models are to be fitted with the Firestone Firehawk GT as optional original equipment, reports Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO). The V-rated all-season Firehawk GT will be supplied in size 245/45R20 99V on the all-new Dodge performance flagship saloon, the 2011 Dodge Charger plus the 2011 Dodge Challenger muscle car.
