10 Black Donuts defendants convicted for violating Nokian’s business secrets

The Finnish District Court of Pirkanmaa has sentenced 10 former Nokian Tyres employees who transferred to the Black Donuts Engineering group of companies for “the violation and abuse of Nokian Tyres’ business secrets”. According to Nokian, the District Court convicted all the defendants. Eight defendants were sentenced to conditional imprisonment of 6–18 months and two received fines. The managing director and two other executives from Black Donuts Engineering Oy were sentenced to business prohibitions of 3–5 years in addition to imprisonment.

Marangoni signs Finland Ringtread partnership with Lujakumi Oy

The Marangoni Ringtread system is entering “new territory” with the signing of Finnish retreader and Point S member Lujakumi Oy has signed up as a Marangoni partner. Based in Pori on the country’s west coast, Lujakumi Oy has been in the retreading business for more than 60 years, and look forward to the new partnership agreement.

New Algerian tyre plant to feature Cimcorp logistics automation

Cimcorp has received an order to supply logistics automation facilities to a brand-new tyre plant in Algeria. The factory is a new venture for the Algerian consumer electronics and household appliances group, Saterex. With huge growth in sales of products marketed under its leading ‘Iris’ brand, Saterex is diversifying into tyre manufacture. The new plant is being built in Setif, 300 km east of Algiers, and will be the first tyre factory in Algeria since Michelin Group closed its plant in the capital in 2013.

Millbrook expanding Test World facilities in Finland

Millbrook Group is to expand its Test World site in Finland, which will see it become Europe’s leading location for tyre testing. The project will increase the capacity for testing on natural snow and ice, and introduce wet and dry braking, aquaplaning and split friction surfaces. News of the expansion project was announced on 12 June.

Technotrac: Hankook Tire opens own winter test facility in Finland

With a decisive snip, more than a year’s work was officially complete. Four representatives from Hankook Tire’s global and European operations, suitably rugged up for the occasion, were on hand to open a facility that extends the tyre maker’s aim of self-contained development and manufacture of tyres for European markets. The inauguration of the ‘Technotrac’ facility gives Hankook Tire a permanent home alongside one of the world’s best-known winter test grounds, something that Ho-Youl Pae is very proud of.

Nokian appoints Pantioukhov as interim president/CEO

The board of directors of Nokian Tyres plc has appointed Andrei Pantioukhov, 44, as the interim president and CEO starting 1 January 2017. Pantioukhov currently serves as Nokian Tyres’ general manager, Russian operations and continues also in this role. He has been in the company since 2004, a member of the management since 2009 and executive vice president since the beginning of 2016.

SnapSkan service aims to improve traffic safety for millions: Nokian Tyres

Nokian Tyres’ investment in Sigmavision and the installation of its SnapSkan tool via tyre and car service chain Vianor is targeting “improved safety” for “millions of drivers”, the Finnish tyre manufacturer states. The free and fast technology measures the depth of tyre treads on the go and informs the driver of the results, serving motorists on their everyday routes, in locations such as car parks.

Nokian Tyres sales and profits down in second quarter and first half 2016 figures

Nokian Tyres has released its second quarter and first half 2016 figures, the numbers are also the first full quarter figures published since Nokian admitted it had been involved in tyre test irregularities in a series of press articles during the first quarter of the year. Forex issues and other problems in the Russian market are no-doubt connected to Nokian’s performance. Indeed, Russian sales declined by almost 30 per cent and mild winter weather is said to have left inventories in Russia and North America (see below for further details on this).

Finnish Prime Minister visits Test World tyre test centre

Millbrook Group, the owner of winter and tyre testing specialists, Test World, hosted a series of high-profile visits by key VIPs in the region, including the Finnish Prime Minister, Juha Sipilä, and the US Ambassador to Finland, Charles C. Adams. The news follows Test World’s relatively recent signing of a contract with Hankook to build a winter tyre testing centre in Ivalo for Hankook’s exclusive use.

Along with Nokian’s admission and apology for “mistakes” in its practices concerning tyre tests, the Finnish tyre manufacturer stated that “several operators in the field… have been suspected or evidence has been presented against them of differences between tyres in magazine tests and tyres that are for sale in stores.” After the Nokian statement’s implication of other tyre manufacturers in malpractice regarding independent tyre testing, Michelin immediately responded by stating categorically that it has “never designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations.” Tyres & Accessories approached 11 more of the world’s leading manufacturers, many of whose products regularly appear in magazine tests, for their response to the question: Have you ever designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations? Michelin releases statement on tyre testing and transparency

Last week, the world learned that Nokian Tyres may have supplied bespoke products to tyre testers in past years in order to win or perform better in their tests. In the wake of the publication of such allegations, Michelin has issued a statement regarding its own approach to tyre testing. The tyre maker affirms that it has “never designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations.”
