Finland’s central police agency, the National Bureau of Investigation, has completed its pre-trial investigation related to Nokian Tyres and accusations of tyre test rigging. It has referred the case to the Prosecutor’s Office of Helsinki.
Test World has won the ‘Tire Industry Supplier of the Year’ award at the Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence 2019. According to the company, the win recognises continued investment in Test World, with expanded indoor test facilities due to be officially opened during a ceremony on the 27 March.
Nokian Tyres has received the Silver Class distinction in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook 2019. RobecoSAM is an expert on sustainability whose annual assessment is considered to be a particularly reliable and comprehensive report of how sustainability is implemented in companies around the world.
According to Nokian Tyres, global demand for premium heavy tyres is rising and new, larger tyres for bulkier machinery need to be developed. To meet this demand, the tyre maker’s Nokian Heavy Tyres unit will erect a new research and development centre in Nokia, Finland next year.
During the summer months of June to August, the SnapSkan tyre scanning technology from Nokian Tyres measured the condition of tyres fitted to almost 200,000 cars in Finland’s largest cities. What these free tests showed is that up 13 per cent of all cars scanned were fitted with summer tyres that have what the tyre maker calls a “dangerously low tyre tread depth.”
Nokian Heavy Tyres has introduced a successor to the Nokian MPT Agile, and it says this new-generation tyre offers “several improvements over the original.” The Nokian MPT Agile 2 takes up its predecessor’s remit of offering manoeuvrability, grip and reliability both on and off the road and at any speed; the tyre is aimed at defence and peacekeeping applications, rescue vehicles and off-road trucks.
Next month, Test World will open its new temperature-controlled wet and dry asphalt indoor tracks at its facility near Ivalo, Finland. These new tracks complement the new and extended snow and ice indoor tracks that opened in April.
Nokian Tyres is increasing production capacity for passenger car tyres at its Nokia, Finland factory by approximately 30 per cent.
Worn tyres find use in many applications – they may serve as playground swings or as fenders on a wharf. They’re often invisible in plain sight, however Nokian Tyres intends to take advantage of their ubiquity. The tyre maker has placed tyre safety information on repurposed old tyres all around its home market of Finland.
The SnapSkan digital tread service, deployed by tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres in cooperation with its tyre retail and car service chain Vianor, is launching five new checking points in the Nordic countries. A total of four new SnapSkan service points will be opened in parking garages in various locations across Finland. SnapSkan is also going international with the opening of a new service point in Oslo, Norway. This is the first SnapSkan service point outside of Finland.
A decision has been made on the 89.2 million euros that Nokian Tyres was ordered to pay in additional taxes and punitive tax increases for the 2007 to 2010 tax years. Finland’s Administrative Court has entirely overturned the tax reassessment decisions made by the country’s Board of Adjustment and has additionally ordered the Tax Administration to pay Nokian Tyres 40,000 euros in legal costs.
Test World has appointed Andrew Beach as its new business development director. Beach will be responsible for all sales activities at Test World, and play a key role in continuing to accelerate its growth.
Andrew Beach has spent his career working in automotive test and development. He joined Millbrook in 2000 and has been working closely with Test World since its acquisition by Millbrook in September 2015.
Through an investment of around 70 million euros in its factory in Nokia, Finland, Nokian Tyres group company Nokian Heavy Tyres Ltd. will increase its production capacity by 50 per cent over the coming three years. The maximum capacity for heavy tyre production will grow from approximately 20 million kilogrammes a year to 32 million kilogrammes. Alongside this capacity boost, approximately 50 additional people will be hired for the production of heavy tyres.
Nokian Tyres is the main partner and title sponsor for the first Ironman triathlon race to take place in Finland. The first Nokian Tyres Ironman 70.3 Finland event will be organised in Lahti, Finland on 30 June 2018. “The exciting sport of triathlon perfectly matches Nokian Tyres’ values that promote mobility and an active lifestyle while boosting the company’s brand visibility globally”, Nokian representatives said in a statement.
Nokian Tyres plc has received a tax reassessment decision from Finland’s Tax Administration, according to which the Company is obliged to pay 59 million euros additional taxes with punitive tax increases relating to the 2011 tax year. Payment must be made in November 2017. 39 million euros of the figure relates to additional taxes and 20 million euros relates to punitive tax increases and interests.
