Michelin’s Rollier to retire mid-year

In February 2011 Michel Rollier announced he didn’t intend to complete his current term of office as managing general partner and chairman of Michelin, as he would be 72 years old when his tenure ended. Rollier, now 67, has decided to retire from his current role this year and announced that at Michelin’s Annual Meeting on 11 May he will recommend shareholders accept that he leave office, effective that date. If shareholders agree, Jean-Dominique Senard, who was elected non-general managing partner in May 2007 and managing general partner last May, will succeed him as chairman from 11 May, 2012.

Michelin and the Mail in map giveway

Starting today, (25 July) the Daily Mail newspaper has teamed up with Michelin to offer readers 10 free UK Regional tourist maps. The first map in the collection is South West England. This will be followed by South East England, East England, East Midlands, West Midlands, Wales, Yorkshire & The Humber, North West England, North East England and finally Scotland.

Lorenzo victorious on hard compound at Mugello

Jorge Lorenzo won the latest Italian MotoGP round using Bridgestone’s hard front and rear slicks, overcoming Casey Stoner’s early lead of 2.3 seconds. He also set a new lap record at Mugello, while Championship leader Stoner also lost out to Andrea Dovizioso in the final six laps, allowing the Italian to achieve his best result of the season in front of a home crowd. Round seven’s winner Ben Spies got the better of Marco Simoncelli for fourth position, ahead of Valentino Rossi who finished sixth having climbed from 12th on the grid.

Stoner fastest on harder slicks in France MotoGP practice

Casey Stoner finished the first day of practice for the French Grand Prix fastest overall, lapping under the existing lap record by nearly half a second. His fastest lap came on the harder option front and rear Bridgestone slicks, though he also lapped under the lap record and set provisional fastest using the new soft asymmetric rear tyre. Masao Azuma, chief field engineer at Bridgestone Motorsport: “I am pleased with the performance of both our slick tyre options today as we can see from the laptimes that both worked well.

Dumped tyres create Lincolnshire flooding risk

The Lincolnshire village of Swaton was threatened with flooding thanks to the actions of tyre dumpers. On January 31 the Environment Agency was notified that around 150 used passenger cars dumped in the Swaton Eau had blocked the river channel, causing a back up of water.

Mr. Unlucky – First German Caught Out under New Winter Tyre Rules

Two days ago Germany’s recently amended winter tyre regulations came into force, and the first driver (that Tyres & Accessories knows of) has been caught out – in circumstances he won’t forget in a hurry. The 32-year old driver of a car fitted with summer tyres (which in Germany are now illegal when used on hard-packed snow, slush, black ice and frost covered roads) lost control of his vehicle on an icy road in the city of Düsseldorf. He possibly would have avoided a fine and demerit points taken from his license had the incorrectly-equipped car not gone into a skid and rammed a parked police car.

Germany Legally Clarifies Winter Tyre Requirements

Even though 87 per cent of German motorists fitted winter tyres last year (according to figures from the motorists’ organisation ADAC), the absence of laws detailing the finer points of their usage has baffled some drivers. This ambiguity has now been addressed. “We are now introducing a concrete version (of winter tyre requirements) into legislative procedure and, with this, certainty of law for our roads,” commented Germany’s transport minister, Peter Ramsauer. “We are defining what will be deemed a winter tyre in the future.”

Bulmer to Retire from UK Michelin Guide Editorship

Those who lazily assume all fine British food johnnies are male will be in for a rude shock upon hearing Michelin UK has appointed its first ever female editor for the Great Britain and Ireland, London, and Eating out in Pubs guides. The UK publication Caterer reports that as of October 1 Rebecca Burr will take over the role from Derek Bulmer, who is retiring after 33 years’ association with the guide.

Lorenzo Strongest as Riders Compare Slick Compounds at Brno

MotoGP’s Czech Grand Prix weekend got underway with Free Practice today, and riders were keen to compare the balance of the slick compounds Bridgestone has provided (hard and extra-hard at the front, hard and medium at the rear. Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo continued his strong form during the first hour-long free practice session at Brno, setting the fastest time by more than half a second, his best coming on the harder variants.

Prison for ‘Prolific’ Fly Tipper

It’s chokey for Malcolm the fly-tipper. Tower Hamlets Council has reported the sentencing of Malcolm Regan – a man it describes as one of the UK’s most prolific fly-tippers – to four months’ imprisonment for his misdeeds. The 44-year old Mile End man appeared in Blackfriars Crown Court on August 9 along with accomplices Michael Briggs and Anthony Gustave.

Asymmetric Tyres Allow MotoGP Tyres “Good Overlap of Performance” in Assen

MotoGP’s Dutch TT Grand Prix this weekend – the 80th meeting held at the circuit – yielded a significant success for Bridgestone, the series’ sole tyre supplier. Throughout the weekend, the tyre manufacturer states, riders were lapping competitively on each specification, and the race provided a direct comparison between the extra edge grip of the softer rear slick option and the additional traction of the harder option. The balance between the medium and the hard asymmetric rear tyre options was illustrated by the podium: Jorge Lorenzo took his fourth win of the season using the hard option, with Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner coming second and third respectively using the softer rear tyre. While the circuit was modified in the Ruskenhoek corner, shortening it by 13 metres, the new lap record set by Dani Pedrosa was two seconds faster. The track temperature was high, reaching 47 degrees Celsius, and the weather was fine throughout the weekend maximising the riders’ dry running time.

Trucks Seized in UAE Tyre Safety Programme

During a two-week long tyre safety campaign held in the United Arab Emirates, police stopped and confiscated 1,099 trucks running on unsafe tyres. Tyre related faults are reported to be one of the main causes of accidents in the UAE, a problem compounded by the preference of many truck drivers for cheap but inferior quality tyres.

Fly-Tipper Lumped With 10-Year ASBO

The leader of a fly-tipping gang has been handed down a 10-year ASBO for his connections to the fly-tipping of hundreds of thousands of tyres. According to the London Borough of Newham, Malcolm Regan (44) coordinated an operation in which tyres were dumped at locations around Newham, including outside Stratford Magistrates' Court and in a river next to the Olympic Park. During the hearing at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on 25 February 2010, District Judge Peter Wain granted the ASBO in his absence. He also branded him a “serious and prolific fly-tipper.” If he breaches the ASBO he faces a £5,000 fine or up to 5 years’ in prison.
