Study Hints at Shifts in American Vehicle Buying

(Akron/Tire Review) A new study by the Opinion Research Corporation says that 78 per cent of Americans want the federal government to impose a 40-mile-per-gallon (MPG) fuel-efficiency standard for vehicles. And, the study shows, nine out of 10 Americans expect gas prices to go up in the near future. The study also said that 70 per cent of Americans now factor expected future gas prices into their vehicle buying criteria, and are looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Forty-five per cent claim they are now more likely to buy a hybrid or other fuel-efficient vehicle than they were six months ago, compared to 30 per cent who are unchanged in their plans.

We Sell Tyres Moves Forwards

East midlands-based We Sell Tyres (wholesale) company is moving its Newark wholesale operation to larger premises situated in Colwick, Nottingham. The move is due to take place in early 2007. The new premises which cover a total of over 40,000 square feet are within easy reach of central Nottingham and will further improve the company’s stock holding facility and existing delivery service into Derbyshire and surrounding areas.

New Name, Same Service

In order to further improve its service, North Eastern Tyres and Exhauts (NETE) has now dedicated a side of its business to exclusively serving trade customers. With the establishment of NE Wholesale the company plans to focus will focus on the distribution side of the business and is looking to provide an “unparalleled level of service.”

NE Wholesale commercial director Gavin Marshall explained how service is ever important in such a rapidly evolving marketplace: “I feel that at NE Wholesale we operate in a completely different way from most of the tyre distribution market. We have worked terrifically hard to retain a low cost base while constantly increasing our levels of service, this means we offer up to 10 times a day delivery at the same levels of cost as some of our so-called larger competitors. The hard work done by our Group Tyre Head Office also allows us to deliver quality [exclusive brands] such as Federal and Maxxis as opposed to a hotchpotch offer of different lower quality options.

Cooper Confirms Texarkana Cuts

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. confirmed in recent federal securities filings that it will cut some 500 jobs at its Texarkana, Arkansas, tyre plant in a move to reduce operating costs. Cooper said the layoffs should be completed by the end of May 2007, according to reports, and will result in a production reduction of approximately 3.3 million tyres per year at the plant.

TMD Friction has appointed Nafeesa Qabaz to the role of Group Pricing and Marketing Intelligence Manager. Nafeesa has managed similar functions within the UK Aftermarket for a variety of companies, most recently Federal Mogul.

Lear Corp and Transense Cooperate

Automotive supplier Lear Corp. has signed an agreement with Transense Technologies PLC to develop a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that does not require batteries and will comply with US federal regulations. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

US Regulators Push For Mandatory ESC Fitment

(Akron/Tire Review) Federal regulators have announced plans to require electronic stability control in all vehicles, a move that advocates call the single greatest vehicle safety improvement since the seat belt. Once all vehicles are equipped with the stability systems, likely by 2012, they could save more than 10,000 lives, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and eliminate more than 500,000 crashes annually, while saving billions of dollars in medical, repair and insurance costs.

Carmakers Must Reveal Black Boxes

(Akron/Tire Review) After more than a decade of study, US federal safety regulators have outlined minimum requirements for “black boxes” in vehicles, but stopped short of mandating them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a new rule that says the devices, officially known as “event data recorders,” must be made more durable and that all automakers must collect the same type of data from them.

TIA Supports Rolling Resistance Legislation

On 18 July the US Tire Industry Association (TIA) announced its support of House Resolution 5632, after “much deliberation,” TIA has decided to support H. R. 5632. The TIA Government Affairs Committee was able to come to a consensus after weighing the pros and cons of the legislation, the association said in a statement. “We were very pleased to receive feedback and questions from our membership regarding H.R. 5632,” said TIA President, Bob Malerba. “It was extremely helpful to our Government Affairs Committee in making a decision on whether to support the bill.”

Russian Scientist Sentenced for South Korean Espionage

A Russian scientist who worked in cooperation with Hankook subsidiary ASA has been given a six-year suspended sentence for his part in an international espionage case. According to Russian news agencies, Oskar Kaibyshev, 66, the former director of the Institute for Metals Superplasticity Problems (IMPS), had been on trial in the Supreme Court of the Volga republic of Bashkortostan for passing dual-use technology to South Korea.

Goodyear Faces Federal Discrimination Suit, Says Report

(Akron/Tire Review) The Associated Press has reported that the US Labor Department has filed a hiring discrimination suit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The suit alleges the tyremaker discriminated against female applicants for jobs at its Danville, Virginia, tyre plant in the 1990s.

Federal Corporation Launches Three Websites

Taiwan-based Federal Corporation has launched three new websites – www.federaltire.com, www.herotire.com and the company’s corporate site www.federalcorporation.com. All are available in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese versions. Federal Tire has a brand new look and Hero Tire now has its own independent site, emphasizing its focus on this stand-alone brand. House Subcommittee Approves Right to Repair Act

(Akron/Tire Review) The independent automotive aftermarket scored a major victory May 25 in its battle for passage of the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) when the House Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee voted in favor of the legislation in an open mark-up session.

Although the bill was amended during the committee meeting, AAIA said the primary goal of the legislation remained intact. Right to Repair legislation would require the Federal Trade Commission to enforce requirements that independent repair shops have access to the same information and tools that are available to new car dealers.

Lawyer Back With Another Firestone Recall Effort

(Akron/Tire Review) After more than a year of silence, Pasadena attorney Joe Lisoni has begun attacking Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT), filing his fifth petition with NHTSA calling for the recall of some 30 million Firestone Steeltex tyres. Lisoni’s latest petition, according to reports, cites five traffic accident deaths in 2005 that he claims were caused by the tyres.

Lisoni’s previous state and federal court efforts to force a recall of Firestone Steeltex lines have all failed. Lisoni began his quest against the tyremaker back in August 2002.
