Net Income Up for Sumitomo Rubber

Japan’s Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd has announced its consolidated financial results for the 2006 year. For the twelve months ending December 31, 2006 the company’s net sales came to 534,086 million yen (£2.34 billion), up 4.1 per cent on 2005’s results. The company’s operating income was 36,789 million yen (£161.2 million), substantially lower than in 2005, but net income, taking income taxes and extraordinary profit and loss into account, increased by 7.6 per cent during 2006, up to 27,585 million yen (£120.1 million).

Falken Appoints Smallwood, Mandai to Board of Directors

(Akron/Tire Review) Richard Smallwood, president and chief operating officer of Falken Tire Corp., has been appointed to serve on the company’s board of directors.

Kazumichi Mandai, director of Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ Tire Trading Inc., was also selected as a new member of Falken’s board of directors.

Falken Moves HQ

(Akron/Tire Review) Falken Tire Corp. has relocated its US corporate headquarters from Rancho Cucamonga to Fontana, Calif.

Falken Head Retires

(Akron/Tire Review) Falken Tire Corp. announced that Hideo Honda, chief executive officer and chairman, has retired as of Jan. 1. Honda will return to Japan where he will serve as an advisor to Sumitomo Rubber Industries for the remainder of the year.

Replacing Honda as CEO and chairman is Yasushi (Tank) Tanaka, a former director at SRI Tire Trading Ltd. in Tokyo. Tanaka joined SRI in 1976 and spent the majority of his career in the export and OE departments.

McAndrew Gets New Post With Falken

(Akron/Tire Review) John McAndrew, who joined Falken Tire Corp. earlier this year, was promoted to director of dealer channel sales. He had previously served as director of business development. McAndrew held a number of executive positions with Yokohama, Sumitomo and Treadways.

Micheldever Appoints New Falken Brand Manager

Micheldever Tyre Services Ltd (MTS) has announced that Jon Limmer will take on the newly created Falken brand manager position at Micheldever. He will report directly to Alan Baldwin, wholesale director. Jon Limmer has been promoted from his current role with MTS of business development manager, South West of England and Wales region. Limmer has been with MTS for six years and can be described as a tyre industry veteran, having held a range of roles across his 20 years within the industry.

Consumer Reports Releases Performance Tyre Ratings

(Akron/Tire Review) Consumer Reports has released ratings on performance all-season tyres. In the H-Rated category, Consumer Reports ranked the Dunlop SP Sport 5000, the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S, and the Falken Ziex ZE 512 as the top three performers. The top-three V-rated tyres, according to Consumer Reports, were the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4, the Yokohama Avid V4s and the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S.

Falken Tyres Show New FK452 at Max Power Live

Falken Tyres attendance at Max Power Live (at the NEC.), said to be the “Fastest, loudest car show ever”, lived up to expectations according to the company. Inside the halls were filled with stands and bursting with customised cars. Outside was the Speed Arena where people could watch the cars in action.

The Falken team designed their exhibit to stand out and, according to company staff it was constantly busy as a result. The Falken girls once again drew in the crowds by giving people signed posters and having their photograph taken. In addition GT4, the Playstation computer game that features the Falken Skyline, had queues of people waiting to play.

Goodyear Dunlop Increases Marketing Focus

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Limited has announced the appointment of Mark Dilks as Brand and Market Planning Manager. Dilks will be responsible for developing the brand and market strategies for the company’s wide range of consumer tyre brands, including Goodyear, Dunlop, Fulda, Falken and Sava.

Falken Looks to the Future with New Products

This year there was one single goal that Sumitomo Rubber Industries or rather Falken wanted to achieve at the Reifen show in Essen: promoting the new flagship tyre – Falken FK-452. In particular there is now a new unique Falken size which was developed together with O·Z as a wheel manufacturer and aimed at SUV drivers, explains Isamu Ishida.

Falken Becomes the Latest to Increase Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) In the USA, Falken Tire Corp. announced a limited price increase, effective May 1. The increase will impact select sizes of Falken’s S/TZ04 and Ziex 60- and 65-series tyres.

Max Power Returns to the NEC

Max Power Live, the UK’s biggest modified motor show, will be returning to Birmingham for its eighth consecutive year from Friday 30 June through to Sunday 2 July 2006. The number one custom car event, a collaboration between Haymarket Exhibitions and Emap Automotive, will fill 500,000 square feet of the National Exhibition Centre this summer.

The organisers of this year’s Max Power Live are expecting to entertain more than 50,000 car enthusiasts as they descend upon the NEC to catch a glimpse of the latest in tuning, styling, drifting performances and ‘In Car Entertainment’ (ICE).

Promotions at Falken US

(Akron/Tire Review) The new year has brought new job assignments for some key Falken Tire Corp executives. Hideo Honda, who had been Falken’s president and COO, was promoted to CEO of the company. Richard Smallwood, previously vice president of sales and marketing, took over Honda’s position as president and COO.

Falken to Exhibit at Autosport/Aftermarket Show

In January 2006, Falken High Performance Tyres will again be present when the doors open at the Aftermarket Show. At the Falken stand in the main hall visitors will be able to examine the new FK452 premium tyre, and the T110. Falken Tyres UK website will also be on show allowing visitors access to the dealer locator system, enabling them to find their local Falken supplier.

Another highlight will be the attendance of the Falken Girls who will be signing copies of their very own Falken Calendars and Posters. The stand will also include a race car simulator, featuring the Gran Turismo 4 computer game. From here visitors will be able to drive the Falken Nissan Skyline GT-R around the famous 20.8 kilometre long Nurburgring track.

Performing With Private Brands

National wholesaler Southam Tyres, a trading division of Micheldever Tyres Services Plc, has an established position when it comes to private brands. And as the home of the UK’s first exclusive own-brand tyre, the company is in a good position to comment on the future of the private brand concept. Similarly Stapletons Tyres Services is another of the UK’s most influential tyre wholesale businesses and sells significant quantities of private brand products. When Tyres & Accessories spoke to the company’s two marketing managers (Stuart Amos representing Southam Tyres and Stephen Marsh, Stapletons), they explained that there is an art to selecting the right brand and sizes and that private brands are moving away from being synonymous with yesterday’s technology, towards the forefront of consumers’ high performance demands.
