Tanzanian government supports reopening of General Tire factory

The Tanzanian government has reiterated its commitment to restarting production at the General Tyre East African Limited (GTEA) factory before the end of this year.

The state-owned venture was once a significant player in the East African tyre market, along with Kenya’s former Firestone operation. According to local news sources, it started manufacturing tyres in 1971 and at its peak produced up to 1,200 tyres a day and employed over 4,000 workers.

Innoson General Tyres Nigeria executives seek to reopen plant

Executives are moving to re-open the former General Tyres and Tubes factory in Nigeria, according to local news sources. The bid to reopen General Tyres and Tubes Company, Emene, Enugu, a subsidiary of Innoson Group, the Bank of Industry (BOI) sees executives promise to meet the relevant stakeholders with a view towards resolving lingering problems between the company and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

Marangoni expanding pre-cure strip, Ringtread production in Argentina

A little more than a year after the inauguration of its new plant in Rosario (Santa Fe province), Marangoni Argentina has further expanded its operations with the installation of a fifth 4-metre press for Unitread and Precauch flat pre-cure retread strips, plus two other presses for the production of Ringtreads. The presses will commence operation shortly.

Reports: Maxxis/Cheng Shin planning India factory

Multiple Indian news sources are reporting that Taiwanese tyre maker Cheng Shin/Maxxis is planning to invest in an Indian factory. According to one Business Standard report, group president Dr. Wally Chen called upon Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on 15 October.

New retread facility has Latin America’s largest capacity

A new retread factory that is reported to have the largest capacity in Latin America has opened in Campina Grande do Sul, Paraná, Brazil.

Operated by retread tyre manufacturer Ivo Recap, the facility is part of the Vipal authorised network and has a production capacity of 20,000 retreaded tyres per month. Production will include retreaded tyres for cargo transport, agricultural, off-the-road, and industrial applications.

Bridgestone China opens new Shenyang tyre factory

Bridgestone China, officially opened its latest truck and bus radial tyre plant in Shenyang, China on 24 September. The opening comes a year after Bridgestone said it would triple investment in the site from US$99 million to nearly $300 million.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems outlines route to global agricultural tyre leadership

The agricultural tyre market appears particularly well suited towards specialised manufacturers; Trelleborg Wheel Systems acquired Pirelli’s agricultural business in 1999, with the branding switched between 2006 and 2010. Since acquiring various technologies from Pirelli, the Trelleborg Group has invested heavily in order to make its tyre and wheel operation a premium brand player in the agricultural and forestry tyre market. The Tivoli facility, with its buildings showing a manufacturing history dating back to the 1940s, but also incorporating the latest agricultural tyre building machinery, represents “a history full of innovation for farming professionals,” in president of the Agricultural and Forestry Tyres business unit, Paolo Pompei’s words.

Superior Industries closing Arkansas wheel factory

Yesterday Superior Industries International, Inc. announced it will close its Rogers, Arkansas wheel manufacturing plant as part of an initiative to cut costs and increase competitiveness.
The firm expects to cease operations at Rogers by the end of 2014. Production will be shifted to other Superior manufacturing facilities, including those in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Chihuahua, Mexico, and is anticipated to generate a net $15 million labour cost savings year-over-year. Approximately 500 jobs will be lost.

Mitas to expand Serbia tyre factory

Mitas has announced plans to invest the expansion of its Ruma, Serbia factory. In the first part of the planned upgrades, Mitas will build a new logistics centre. According to the company, this will help satisfy the rising demand from South European, East European and Middle East markets. In practice this means Mitas will soon also prepare an upgrade of Ruma’s production capacities for radial agricultural and forestry tyres. Mitas’ Serbian factory now produces both bias and radial agricultural tyres. The investment will be completed in mid-2016, at which point the Ruma plant will have a capacity of 35,000 tonnes a year.

Nexen confirms Czech Republic factory details

Nexen Tire has officially confirmed that it is building a new plant in Zatec, Czech Republic with the stated aims of developing its European foothold and expanding its global production base. The company also confirmed that the project will cost 1.2 trillion Korean won, approximately 829 million euros, bringing some clarity to reports that have also suggested a US$1.17 billion pricetag.

Nexen gearing up for greater European presence

A lot has been going on at Nexen this year. Much of this activity has been taking place within the European market. And more still was going on during the weeks before, during and after the Essen Show.

Less than two weeks before the exhibition opened the company highlighted its recent progress with first quarter results punching above the company’s weight. During the exhibition the company was ostensibly there to display examples from its range and launch three new products – the N’blue HD Plus, Winguard SnowG and Winguard WT1(see textbox for more about what was actually presented in Essen). But it quickly transpired that there is more than this going on.

Nexen Tire signs Czech plant deal, ups investment to $1.17 billion

Following Tyres & Accessories’ reporting of Nexen Tire Corp’s decision to build a greenfield tyre production plant in the Czech Republic back in March 2014, the company has signed a deal with the Czech government. On 27 June the Korean Yonhap news agency reported that tyre company negotiated a 1.2 trillion won (US$1.17 billion) to build the factory. The specific number here is significant because the details issued to T&A in March only referred to investment of $800 million dollars.
