North Carolina’s Edgecombe County will build a manufacturing training centre at Kingsboro to provide a trained workforce for Triangle, as part of its agreement with Chinese tyre manufacturer.
Triangle Tire’s decision to build its North American manufacturing facility in North Carolina was helped by the offer of $152 million in state and local financial enticements, state officials announced December 19. The company will receive $66 million in state incentives and $86 million from Edgecombe County. The two-phase project is expected to be complete by 2023.
The Ronal Group, a leading manufacturer of alloy wheels, has built a second plant in Teruel, Spain, which was officially opened on 10 October 2017. The Ronal Group has run a production and administration facility in the Aragón region of north-eastern Spain since 1983. The foundation stone for the latest plant was laid in February 2016.
Cimcorp has received an order to supply logistics automation facilities to a brand-new tyre plant in Algeria. The factory is a new venture for the Algerian consumer electronics and household appliances group, Saterex. With huge growth in sales of products marketed under its leading ‘Iris’ brand, Saterex is diversifying into tyre manufacture. The new plant is being built in Setif, 300 km east of Algiers, and will be the first tyre factory in Algeria since Michelin Group closed its plant in the capital in 2013.
Shandong province, China-based Linglong Tires is considering a European factory. In the wake of media reports, Tyres & Accessories spoke with company representatives and learnt that a number of locations in both Eastern and Western Europe are being considered.
Toyota Motor Europe will invest a further £240 million in its Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK) car plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire (UK). According to the company, Toyota’s investment will be spent on improving competitiveness and promoting UK supply chain efficiencies.
Sumitomo Rubber USA has bought 6.4 acres of brownfield land adjacent to its tyre manufacturing site in Tonawanda. According to the New York State-based Buffalo News, Sumitomo’s new land used to be home to a chemical plant that was destroyed by a fire nearly 30 years ago.
Algerian state oil company Sonatrach is looking to enter the tyre business. The Algeria Press Service (APS) shares details given by group vice-president for Downstream Activity, Akli Remini on the sidelines of the Ogex 2016 oil and gas exhibition; Sonatrach will cooperate with foreign partners on a project to produce “5 million tons of tyres per year.”
Apollo Tyres is reportedly investing in a new two wheel and light truck tyre factory in Andhra Pradesh. The news followed the publication of the company’s second quarter results.
Brembo announced that it inaugurated its new brake plant in Escobedo, Mexico on 20 October. Completed in record time, with an investment of $36 million, the new plant will focus on the production of aluminium calipers and is intended to strengthen Brembo’s presence in North America. At the same time the company announced a plan to invest an additional $93 million to build a new foundry for cast iron discs.
ZC Rubber’s new bike tyre factory in Anji, Zhejiang province, has commenced production. The Anji factory is associated with an investment of up to US$620 million and covers 860,000 square metres, focusing on the motorcycle tyres, e-bike tyres and inner tubes etc. Shen Jinrong, president of ZC Rubber, says that the factory‘s output value amounts to more than $1 billion.
Sentury Tire has selected a plot of land just outside LaGrange, Georgia as the location for its US$500 million US tyre factory, according to various local news sources. Reports in local US newspapers suggest that the decision was made on Thursday 1 September – at which point the choice was between the shortlist of the reportedly successful Georgia location and the Memphis Regional Megasite in Tennessee.
The Michelin Group has acquired Levorin, a Brazilian manufacturer of bicycle and motorcycle tyres.
Levorin is a family business which was founded in 1943 by Hercules Levorin. It specializes in the production of tyres for the commuter segment in Brazil. In 2015 Levorin had an annual turnover of 135 million euros and employs 2,000 people at its two plants in Sao Paulo and Manaus.
The Tanzanian government is set to build a new tyre plant. According to local news reports, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Adelhem Meru, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) the new factory will be based on new technology.
Rumours and reports circulating since April about Michelin intention to build a new Michelin tyre factory in Mexico were confirmed on 4 July when the French company issued news of its plans to build a facility for producing high-end car and light truck tyres there. Michelin says construction of the 142,000 square metre, €450 million factory in León, Guanajuato state will begin in the second half of this year, with tyre production expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2018. An annual output of 4 to 5 million tyres is planned for the initial production phase, and the León plant will be gradually ramped up.
