Swansea First Stop Dealership Renews Charity Pledge

A Swansea First Stop dealership is renewing its support for a campaign raising vital funds for impoverished and neglected youngsters in South Wales. It is the third year running that Harris Brothers Tyres will be the headline sponsor of radio stations ’The Wave’ and ‘Swansea Sound’s’ Cash for Kids initiative. Last year alone the business worked with the stations to help raise more than £30,000 for good causes. That included a £10,000 donation to Childline following a glitzy ball and auction where Esther Rantzen was the special guest of honour.

Three New Models to have Yokohama as OE

Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama has recently been chosen to supply OE fitment tyres on three new models. The latest additions to the Yokohama portfolio include high performance, upgrade and off-road applications.

The new Honda Legend comes wearing Yokohama’s flagship tyre, the ADVAN Sport. The Legend is Honda’s flagship luxury saloon and features permanent four wheel-drive, a 291bhp V6 VTEC engine and a host of safety features, such as emergency braking radar and lane changing assistance. The Legend is fitted with 235/50R17 100W Yokohama ADVAN Sport V103 tyres, providing high levels of grip and response.

BFGoodrich to Become OE for Humvee

Michelin-owned tyremaker BFGoodrich will soon equip the US military’s Humvee vehicle with its Baja T/A tyre after being awarded a US$10.7 million contract. The Baja T/A to be fitted to the Humvee has been developed especially for military use and carries an E Load Rating with a load capacity of 4,540 pounds per tyre at 65 psi (4.4 bar). According to Michelin, the new tyre has a 22.5 per cent increase in projected tread life compared to the previous Humvee tyre, as well as superior manoeuverability and mud traction.

Officials Challenge Polluting Tyremaker

Deputies from the people’s congress in the Chinese city of Guangzhou have asked officials from the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau why no action has been taken to deal with the large amount of pollution caused by a state-owned tyremaker located in the city. South China Tire & Rubber, one of the country’s largest tyre suppliers, reportedly emits large quantities of sulphurous gas from its factory, and this is claimed to affect the health of an estimated 100,000 people.

Reprieve for DuPont Factory

Automotive component and sealant manufacturer Dupont Performance Elastomers will reportedly retain their Rubbertown factory in Louisville, Kentucky until the end of the year. The company previously announced the facility would close by the end of March.

At a press briefing the Corporate Affairs manager for Michelin Nigeria Limited, Ojo-Osagie, passed on details of the factors contributing to the decision and the measures the company plans to undertake in the coming months.

Michelin to Close Nigerian Factory

Michelin has announced that it is ceasing tyre production at its factory in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The tyremaker informed the Nigerian government of its decision on January 16 and, according to Michelin, both parties have agreed to work together to find a buyer.

Bridgestone Recruiting for Hungarian Factory

Bridgestone Europe has begun recruiting employees for its new factory in Tatabánya, 35 miles west of Budapest. The facility is scheduled to commence trial runs and then volume production in the second half of 2007, following assembly of plant machinery in the spring.
The factory was built with the proceeds of a £125 million investment, and will supply Bridgestone’s European markets. An anticipated 8,000 passenger car and light truck tyres per day will be produced in Tatabánya from 2009 onwards.

Michelin OE for Russian Market Focus

Michelin has signed the first OE deal for its Davydovo plant near Moscow. The plant, which opened in the summer of 2004, will produce two sizes of tyre as original equipment for models of the Ford Focus built in Ford’s Vsevolozhsk factory near St Petersburg.

Dunlop India Resumes Production

Tyres are reportedly rolling off the Dunlop production line in Sahagunj, India, for the first time since 2001. The factory, located in the state of Bengal, is initially focusing on manufacturing Earthmover tyres, although the production of other types of tyre should commence before mid 2007. The workforce at Sahagunj numbered 473 the day work resumed, but this number should increase to about 1,200 during the coming months.

Giti To Boost Production Capacity

Giti Tire (China) Investment Co. Ltd, China’s largest tyremaker, has voiced its intention to raise tyre production capacity at its Hualin factory. The company intends to boost annual capacity there by a further 4.6 million tyres from its current 3.4 million by the end of 2008.

Giti Tire operates six factories in Mainland China, the largest of these being in Anhui and Fujian provinces. The company recently announced plans to sell bonds in order to free up revenue for capital expenditure.

But what does a tyre worker do when the tyre factory closes? After all, they can hardly apply for a job at another tyre factory across the road.

Kumho Signs Third Team for ALMS Season

(Akron/Tire Review) Kumho Tire U.S.A. will supply race tires to Intersport Racing for the upcoming 2007 American Le Mans Series season. Intersport, which runs an AER-powered Lola in the ALMS LMP2 class, will race on Kumho tires for the first time at the Mobil One Twelve Hours of Sebring on Mar. 17.

Hankook to Recall Defective Tyres

Hankook Tire Co., Ltd have released details of a safety related defect present in certain Aurora brand medium duty truck tyres. The affected tyres were manufactured between March 1 and September 5, 2006 at Hankook’s factory in Jiangsu, China, and the company has issued a recall of the 7,890 affected tyres.

Hankook reports that the tyres in question meet official standards but did not completely meet the company’s own endurance criteria. Therefore it was judged that the tyre may become prematurely unserviceable if exposed to extreme conditions of use or abuse.

Recalled tyres will be replaced free of charge until June 30, 2007, at which date a partial credit dependant on remaining tread depth will be given. Further details of the recall can be found on Hankook’s Aurora brand website www.auroratireusa.com.

More Strike Related News

Some returning Goodyear strikers are feeling less than charitable towards their employer after reporting that their lockers at the factory had been tampered with during their absence and the contents taken or thrown away. In the words of Christine Lopez, a Goodyear employee, “You feel like you’ve been violated with your own personal belongings. Whether it’s Goodyear property or your own property, it’s property that you use while you’re at work.”

Not all employees have reported such incidents, and while USW officials say they are concerned, they state that the local contract agreements are their number one priority now everyone has returned to work.
