Indonesian Tyre Sales Shoot Up 54.62%

The Association of Indonesian Tire Producers (APBI) has reported that domestic car tyres sales volumes jumped 54.62 per cent to 7.87 million tyres in the first two months of 2010, compared to 5.09 million tyres at the same point last year. According to data, published on the Indonesian Insider Stories website, the sales volume of motorcycle tyres rose significantly, up 22.7 per cent from 4.22 million tyres in the first two months of last year to 5.18 million tyres at the start of 2010. The association has not reported first quarter sales volume figures.

Michelin Worker Wins £23,300 Asbestos Damages

The High Court has ruled that Michelin Tyre Plc must pay £23,300 in compensation to an ex-employee from the company’s Campbell Road, Stoke factory for respiratory disease reportedly caused by exposure to asbestos. Michelin's insurers are said to have previously offered £20,000 to settle out of court. Some reports have suggested the tyre manufacturer could be facing as many as “hundreds” of further damages claims former workers as a result of the cases.

According to local newspaper The Sentinel, 78 year old pipe fitter Roy Ibbs worked for Michelin between 1969 and 1985. He received the damages after he “was exposed to, ‘frequent and heavy’ clouds of asbestos dust,” the newspaper quoted Ibbs’ barrister Colin McCaul QC as saying. He now suffers from asbestosis. McCaul is further quoted as saying: “There must have been a significant amount of dust at the factory. It's probably fair to say there were former colleagues exposed to the same conditions. The exposure seems to have come from maintenance work on pipes layered with asbestos.”

Conti Offers Clairoix Workers £120 a Month in Tunisia

Multiple news sources have reported details of a recent offer made to workers at Continental’s now closed down Clairoix tyre plant. On March 24, workers from the factory, which has been out of operation since early this year, received a letter from Continental offering them employment in Tunisia. Any enthusiasm the former Clairoix staff may have held towards upping sticks and moving to the North African nation would have quickly evaporated, however, upon reading the remuneration on offer.

African Importer Kingsway to Enter Retreading Sector

Kenya’s Business Daily newspaper reports Kingsway Tyres intends to open its own retreading factory by May 2010. The facility is anticipated to produce 1,000 truck and bus retreads per month, giving it’s the largest capacity of any retreading plant in the country. The tyre importer currently controls 25 per cent of the local market, the Business Daily comments. “With the new retread factory, we are planning to increase the market share to 35 per cent in the next five years,” stated Kingsway managing director Manoj Shah. The company has invested Sh50 million (£404,000) in the new factory.” Shah added that in the new plant Kinsgway is “introducing a new technology that could prolong the mileage span of a retread to almost 90 per cent."

Capacity Boost at Bridgestone Poznan Plant Announced

Bridgestone has outlined plans to invest 105 million euros increasing the capacity of its Poznan tyre factory in Poland. The added capacity will begin to come on-stream in January 2012 and over a two-year period daily output will rise from 23,600 to 29,200 units.

Growing Demand Prompts Early Start of Bridgestone Kitakyushu Expansion

The second phase of expansion planned for Bridgestone’s Kitakyushu factory in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan has begun three months ahead of schedule. In October 2007 Bridgestone Corporation announced a July 2010 date for the next stage of work on the facility, which has been producing large and ultra-large off-the-road radial tyres for construction and mining vehicles since June 2009. Increasing global demand for these large and ultra-large ORR tyres, however, has now seen preparations for second phase expansion plans accelerated and the start of work brought forward to April.

Drug Sting Brings Arrests, Warrants at Goodyear Plant

Tire Review reports that nine employees at Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s Fayetteville, North Carolina tyre factory were arrested in a drug raid at the plant on March 30. The raid revealed illegal drugs in the employees’ vehicles and in the plant, police said, including marijuana, cocaine, prescription drugs and Ecstacy. Police said the arrests – and arrest warrants for five more men – came after a lengthy undercover operation at the plant with narcotics agents posing as Goodyear employees.

Govt Subsidies Sought for Michelin Dundee

The recently appointed manager at Michelin’s factory in Dundee is said to be seeking Scottish Government investment in the plant. Scotland on Sunday reports that John Reid is seeking these funds in order to reassure Michelin in France “that their operation and the commitment they make to a site is valued by the country it operates in.” Reid, who took over as plant manager in January, also said the Dundee factory aims to specialise in tyres designed for the growing electric car market.

Production Halted at Kumho’s Gwangju Plant

South Korea’s JoongAng Daily reports the production line at Kumho Tire’s Gwangju factory has stood idle since last week due to the unavailability of rubber. The company planned to secure emergency funding from its creditor to purchase additional supplies of the commodity, however this action has been delayed due to disagreements with the union representing Kumho Tire employees.

Conti South Africa Investing in Capacity

Over the next year Continental Tyre South Africa intends to invest around ZAR100 million (£8.9 million) to increase production capacity and equip its Port Elizabeth factory to produce ranges that are in demand. “There is a big demand in South Africa for the off-road and 4×4 type tyres and there is some new ranges coming into South Africa over the next two years and we have picked up a lot of this business," he said,” commented Wayne Brown, general manager of Manufacturing. Brown added that Conti's South African produced 4×4 tyres are also sought after in global markets, such as Australia. “This is where we will be focusing our attention,” he commented.

You may not have heard of him before, but tyre maker JK Tyre is backing Aditya Patel as a driving “prodigy and India’s most promising driver.” JK Tyre’s comments come in advance of the forthcoming VW Scirocco Cup that starts in April 2010 in Germany. 21-year old Aditya will also be the first Indian to drive a Green Racing car as the Scirocco runs on ERD Bio gas, something which is said to be global first.

JK Tyre, which has been supporting Aditya in his professional training and participation in various national and International motorsport events, is also one of his lead sponsors in this endeavor. The Scirocco Cup will be held as the partner series of the hugely popular DTM in its 2010 debut season. Staged as the most eco-friendly one-make championship in the world, the sporting equipment: the racing version of the Scirocco is powered by an innovative biogas engine that achieves an 80-per cent reduction of CO2 emissions compared with conventional engines.

Bridgestone Launches New Generation Potenza S001 UHP Tyre

Bridgestone has launched a new flagship UHP tyre aimed at the world’s top sports cars. The Potenza S001 is designed for maximum sports performance and, according to the company, can also offer high efficiency/reduced rolling resistance at the same time. Already factory fitted on the Aston Martin Rapide and Ferrari F458 Italia, the Potenza S001 is now also available in the European replacement market.

Bridgestone reports that the launch of the Potenza S001 extends its line-up and that the company is “reliving the motor-sport heritage” of its Potenza tyres in the new release. “The S001 is designed to give the world’s most powerful sports models even sportier handling and higher efficiency than the current Potenza RE050(A) it complements. With factory fitments on the Aston Martin Rapide and Ferrari F458 Italia, the Potenza S001 clearly meets the challenging demands of both heavier luxury sports cars and the new breed of lighter, extreme sport models,” company representatives said in a statement.

Denman Tire Weighs Up Closure Option

Financially troubled US producer of specialty tyres, Denman Tire Corporation, has indicated it may shut down its operations if alternative arrangements cannot be made. In a company statement, Denman restructuring advisor Richard Szekelyi said “the company has reached the difficult decision to begin reducing operations while we continue our efforts to secure financing and/or find a buyer. If these efforts are unsuccessful, there will be no other alternative but to close all of the operations.”

Michelin’s Stoke Remix Plant Gets £3.9 million in Funding

Michelin Tyre PLC’s Stoke-on-Trent Remix retreading manufacturing site has accepted £3.9 million towards modernisation from the UK Department for Business Innovation and Skills. The company plans to use this money to upgrade its facilities in order to be able to retread its latest generation Michelin Durable Technologies truck and bus tyres. According to company representatives this development takes the company “a step closer to securing £20 million worth of investment over a five-year period”, safeguarding the long-term future of the Stoke industrial site. The company is now said to be working with the Department for Business Innovation and the regional Government agencies “to develop and sustain the manufacturing skills base in the North Staffordshire region.”

Approval Given to Build Da Nang Rubber TBR Factory

The Da Nang Rubber Joint Stock Company, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Chemical Group, reports its Board of Directors has approved a project to build a radial truck tyre factory capable of producing 600,000 tyres per annum. The plant, located on a 106,600 square metre site in the Lien Chieu Industrial Zone near Da Nang City, will be competed in stages – the factory is anticipated to enter operation in 2011, with work on the second stage being carried out in 2012 and 2013.
