Scorpion Launch VW Scirocco 1.4, 2.0 TSi and Vauxhall Tigra Exhausts

Scorpion has released two VW Scirocco exhausts and a new Vauxhall Tigra product onto the market. The Derbyshire-based firm had already released a version for the Scirocco TDI model last year, so the latest fitment is designed to appeal to the purist petrolhead, covering both the 1.4 and 2.0 versions.

After a considerable amount of road and dyno testing, the new system is available as a direct bolt-on replacement to the OEM part. Bolting directly to the rear of the factory catalyst pipe, the 70mm system is available in two fitments. Either a centre and rear box for those that want maximum extraction with minimum intrusion, or for those that prefer a sportier tone, a Sports bypass pipe is available, leaving just the rear box to handle silencing duties. One of the biggest advantages over competitor's designs is that Scorpion's engineers have invested considerable time in studying the flatter profile of the factory rear box when designing theirs.

‘Everyone Comfortable’ With Salem Plant Agreement, says Yokohama

Yokohama Tire Corporation has published details of the new four-year contract signed with the United Steelworkers for its factory in Salem, Virginia. The tyre maker says that contract highlights include a ‘no closure agreement’ for the plant during the contract’s duration, an improved cost of living structure, continuation of the union’s current pension plan and safety and health measures.

Continental Industrial Tyres: Continued Innovation in Korbach for Over 100 Years

Continental’s solid industrial tyres have been continually developed and manufactured in Korbach, Germany for over one hundred years alongside the regular implementation of process and product improvements. Now, the company says, a large step forward recently introduced in the site’s manufacturing processes “demonstrates Continental's technological leadership in the field of industrial tyres”.

Goodyear Closing Taiwan Factory

Goodyear has announced plans to close its Taoyuan factory near Taipei, Taiwan. The passenger car tyre plant will cease operations on July 31, 2010, a decision the tyre maker says it made in line with its global strategy of transferring production to lower-cost countries. Despite the ending of production, Goodyear states its commitment to Taiwan “remains unchanged”.

Century Textiles Suspends Tyre Yarn Output

Diversified Century Textiles & Industries Ltd has reportedly suspended production of tyre yarn at its Century Rayon plant in Kalyan, a Mumbai suburb. According to a Reuters report, the firm is halting production of viscose filament yarn and tyre yarn “due to adverse market scenario and demand slowdown.” Century Rayon, which makes rayon, tyre cord and chemicals, has an annual production of 25,000 tonnes of textile and tyre yarn.

700 Michelin Tyres Stolen

Over 700 Michelin and Kleber car tyres were stolen from a truck in a lay-by on the A1 in Rutland on 5 May. The tyres were en-route from Michelin’s Dundee factory to a distribution centre in mainland Europe when, Michelin reports, they were stolen by thieves who slashed the curtain-sides of the trailer while the driver was asleep. The sizes of tyres stolen were as follows (quantity in brackets):

Yokohama & USW Reach Salem Plant Agreement

In the US, Yokohama Tire and the United Steelworkers failed by exactly seven minutes to secure a last-minute deal regarding the tyre maker’s Salem, Virginia factory. Following a series of negotiations that began in March, a tentative agreement for a new, four-year contract was reached eight minutes before the existing contract’s expiry on May 16.

Dunlop Riders Take 11 NorthWest200 Podium Places

The International NorthWest200 came to a close on Saturday 15 May with Dunlop given particular reason to be satisfied with the performance of riders using its tyres. First places in the Superbike, Superstock and Supersport races went to McGuinness, Amor and Hutchinson, all using Dunlop rubber; in total 11 out of the 18 available podium places went to riders using the manufacturer’s products. Company representative Pat Walsh thought the weekend’s successes boded well for the rest of the season: “This impressive start puts us in a good position for the Isle of Man TT which starts in two weeks time.”

ContiTech Opens Brazil Factory

International News

Contitech has opened a new production facility in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, for textile and steel-cord conveyor belts, creating a stronger foundation for the company’s activities in the Central and South American region. The new 5,000m2 facility is designed to produce 300km of textile and steel-cord conveyor belting annually and has created over 60 new jobs. The total amount invested so far by ContiTech in the factory, machinery and equipment amounts to more than 10 million euros.

Winter Demand Causes Windscreen Shortage

Auto Windscreens has increased production by 40 per cent at its factory following news of a national shortage of windscreens. The high demand for replacement windscreens at the beginning of the year, following the UK’s worst winter in 30 years, has led to a national shortage of windscreens, reports the automotive glazing services company Auto Windscreens.

According to the company, automotive glazing companies throughout the UK are struggling to get hold of parts leading to long delays for windscreen replacement for vehicle owners, particularly for owners of the Vauxhall Zafira, Astra and Vectra, VW Passat and Golf and Audi A4.

End of the Road – Bridgestone Ends Australian Production

Tyre production down under has come to an end with the closure of Bridgestone’s Salisbury factory in Adelaide. On April 30 the company held a private ceremony and barbeque for employees to mark the final day of operations. Many of the 600 or so workers, now out of work, were long-term Bridgestone employees, and emotions amongst staff were mixed.

Costa Rican Tyre Retreader Joins TRIB

Costa Rican tyre retreading company Tire Depot has joined the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB). According to the association, Tire Depot is part of the Fanast organization and is opening a new modern retread factory in Costa Rica. TRIB reports that it was “instrumental in helping them source machinery and equipment for their new facility.”

Fire at Environtyre in Country Durham

Envirotyre has suffered a significant fire at its tyre reprocessing plant on Littleburn Industrial Estate, Langley Moor, County Durham. According to local news reports, firefighters were called to the scene at about 10.30am today (22 April 2010). Fire chiefs reported that the fire could burn “for several more days.” No injuries have been reported. There has been no confirmation of how much damage has been caused.

The Northern Echo reported that a plume of smoke emanating from burning tyre chip in at firm could be seen rising “hundreds of feet into the sky and [could be] seen as far away as Morpeth, in Northumberland, and on Teesside.” The fire is said to have burnt at close to 1,000 degrees Celsius at its peak.

Indonesian Tyre Sales Shoot Up 54.62%

The Association of Indonesian Tire Producers (APBI) has reported that domestic car tyres sales volumes jumped 54.62 per cent to 7.87 million tyres in the first two months of 2010, compared to 5.09 million tyres at the same point last year. According to data, published on the Indonesian Insider Stories website, the sales volume of motorcycle tyres rose significantly, up 22.7 per cent from 4.22 million tyres in the first two months of last year to 5.18 million tyres at the start of 2010. The association has not reported first quarter sales volume figures.

Michelin Worker Wins £23,300 Asbestos Damages

The High Court has ruled that Michelin Tyre Plc must pay £23,300 in compensation to an ex-employee from the company’s Campbell Road, Stoke factory for respiratory disease reportedly caused by exposure to asbestos. Michelin's insurers are said to have previously offered £20,000 to settle out of court. Some reports have suggested the tyre manufacturer could be facing as many as “hundreds” of further damages claims former workers as a result of the cases.

According to local newspaper The Sentinel, 78 year old pipe fitter Roy Ibbs worked for Michelin between 1969 and 1985. He received the damages after he “was exposed to, ‘frequent and heavy’ clouds of asbestos dust,” the newspaper quoted Ibbs’ barrister Colin McCaul QC as saying. He now suffers from asbestosis. McCaul is further quoted as saying: “There must have been a significant amount of dust at the factory. It's probably fair to say there were former colleagues exposed to the same conditions. The exposure seems to have come from maintenance work on pipes layered with asbestos.”
