Silverstone Tyres Win On African Soil

Silverstone Competition Tyres (distributed by Regional Export Tyre Services PTY Ltd in South Africa) have got off to a strong start in the African race and rally scene. The manufacturer reports that it is in the “evaluation stage” with Formula Ford and VW Silvercup challenges. And has concluded negotiations with the SA Northern Region Rally Commission to introduce “The Silverstone Rally Challenge 2006” which will run concurrently with the Regional Championship.

Bosch Subsidiary Partners with Brembo in India

Kalyani Brakes Ltd, Bosch’s Indian subsidiary has set up a joint venture with Italian brake company Brembo. The two businesses are set to establish a 50:50 joint-venture company for the application engineering, production and sales of motorcycle brakes following an agreement signed on 17 October 2005.

Indian Newspaper Upgrades MRF to Buy

Indian newspaper, The Hindu Business Line, has awarded tyre manufacturer, MRF, its ‘Buy’ rating. “Though the recent trend of subdued growth in earnings may continue for a while, the long-term prospects are encouraging,” the newspaper reported.

“The performance of MRF and other tyre producers has taken a knock owing to the sharp rise in the price of key raw materials such as rubber and carbon black. The pick-up in demand in domestic and export markets has mitigated the damage to the bottom line,” the report added.

Michelin Plans Egyptian Production

Michelin has announced that it is looking to invest in a factory in Egypt, following the failure of its attempts to purchase the country’s public’s Transport and Engineering Company, Trenco. The announcement followed nine months of discussions between the French group and the Egyptian Holding Company for the Chemical Industries, which ultimately came to nothing. Michelin remains focussed on developing its presence in Egypt and could still invest in a factory, a Paris-based Michelin spokesman said.

The Michelin Group already has factories in Algeria and in Nigeria, but not yet in Egypt. The company is reportedly aiming to supply the Egyptian market and to export products manufactured in the country. The French group could also seek be seeking to open a factory in one of the country’s principal industrial towns of Egypt, the industrial ministry added.

Hankook Tire’s Profit Rises 13 Per Cent

South Korea’s leading tyremaker Hankook Tire Co. said that first-half earnings rose more than 13 per cent from a year ago on increased exports and sales of high-end products. Net profit came to 114.4 billion won ($112.5 million) in the January-June period, up 13.1 per cent from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

New Cars Come to India from US Producers

(India/Rubber Asia) There has been a flurry of new car launches in the Indian market thanks to the apparent growth of Indian consumer purchasing power. General Motors, the world’s largest car maker for example, has even come out with a new strategy specific to the Indian market, the main component of which is to launch two new cars every year in the country between 2006 and 2008, local media sources report.

Indian Truck and Bus Tyre Exports Rise

(India/Rubber Asia) Indian truck and bus tyre exports grew 16 per cent in March 2005 compared with the same time last year (222,527 in March 2004 compared with 258,727 March 2005).

The Automotive & Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) figures also show that passenger car tyre exports grew, rising from 98,327 units to 107,559 – a 9 per cent increase. LCV tyre export shipments rose 8 per cent to 118,337 units in March 2005 from 109,272 the previous year. Tractor tyre exports were also significantly higher than the previous year, growing 29 per cent (front), 11 per cent (rear) and 46 per cent (trailer) while OTR tyre shipments jumped 37 per cent. Scooter and motorcycle tyre exports shot up 45 and 44 per cent respectively.

Car Production Up in April

Provisional output data released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics shows that UK car production rose 10.6 per cent, or 13,689 units, in April.

This puts the year-to-date total above the 2004 level for first time this year.

Both output for home and export volumes rose by over 10 per cent last month.

“Despite problems at Longbridge, today’s figures show that the UK still has a strong vehicle manufacturing base”, said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.

Montupet to Construct Bulgaria Plant

Montupet S.A., the French aluminium wheel manufacturer, is to put 70 million levs (£24.6 million) in the construction of a new production plant in Bulgaria, according to the Bulgarian investment agency.

Jaguar Plant Number One in US Initial Quality Study

Ford Motor Company’s Halewood Jaguar assembly has earned the Gold Plant Quality Award for assembly plant quality in the European region, according to the J D Power and Associates. The 2005 US Initial Quality Study (IQS) found that the Jaguar X-Type, receives a score of 70 problems per 100 vehicles, the best score among European plants assembling vehicles for export to the United States. The Halewood plant, which was first included in the IQS in 2002, has shown a 55 per cent quality improvement to 70 problems per hundred in 2005 from 157 in 2002.

Forecast Predicts Chinese Rubber Growth

A forecast by the China Minmetals & Chemicals Import and Export Chamber of Commerce says that demand from the tyre industry will be the major factor in a rise in the price of rubber and growth in the Chinese Rubber Industry in 2005.

Treadways Appoints New EVP of Operations

Koichiro (Kyle) Iwasawa has been named executive vice president of operations for Treadways Corp.

Iwasawa, who is replacing Koji Aoyama, started his career with Sumitomo Corp. in 1979 and worked for Treadways for six years. Iwasawa served as director of marketing and operations from 1993-1995 and vice president of operations from 1996-1999. Most recently, he was general manager of the paper and paperboard export department of Sumisho Paper Co. in Tokyo.

Iwasawa will work out of Treadways’ headquarters office in East Norriton, and will report directly to Roy Araki, president of the company.

Cooper Names New Director of European Sales and Marketing

(Akron/TR) Cooper Avon has named Steven T Kersh as director of European sales and marketing. In his new role, he will oversee sales and marketing efforts for European operations headquartered in Melksham, England. The appointment will become effective on 1 April, 2005. Mr Kersh began his Cooper career in 1993 as a management trainee. In 1995 he was promoted to export sales customer service coordinator, and since has served as an export sales trainee, export sales territory manager, regional manager of export sales and most recently as manager of export sales.

Cooper Promotes Marketing Executives

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has made a number of new appointments, including the promotion of Ed Reading to vice president of international sales and marketing, writes Tire Review. In his new role, Mr Reading will be responsible for coordinating sales and marketing strategies for all Cooper products sold outside the US, as well as export sales from the US.

In addition, Cooper named Matthew Moore as manager of programme pricing. Mr Moore will be responsible for determining prices on Cooper tyre brands. Finally, Chris Barbara was named sales training manager, and will be responsible for developing and facilitating training for Cooper’s dealers and sales force.

UK Vehicle Production Slips

UK car production fell 3.7 per cent or 5,286 units in January 2005, reports the SMMT. At the same time output for the home market climbed 4.3 per cent. However, production for export markets fell by 7.5 per cent, compared to a growth of 12.4 per cent a year ago.
